Programs for IRC: The best programs for IRC networks.

mIRC

Impossible to carry out a review of IRC programs without inserting into it mIRC, the most popular Internet Relay Chat software that allows you to chat on IRC channels around the world, organize and manage various connections, and download files via the IRC network. It is characterized by an extremely sparse user interface that at first glance is not particularly easy to use but this gap can be filled in a very short time thanks to the many program guides available online. XChat is an open source IRC client for Linux and Windows that allows you to connect, chat and download files from multiple channels and IRC servers at the same time. It has a rather basic user interface, like that of mIRC, and supports various advanced functions, such as saving chat sessions. The software is paid but is available in a free trial version that allows you to test all its functions for a period of 30 days. Download from here.

HydraIRC

HydraIRC it’s a’free and open source alternative to mIRC which allows you to chat on IRC channels and servers around the world. It supports DCC chats and file transfer, connecting to multiple servers at the same time, tabbed browsing, DLL plugins, channel monitoring and much more. It has a very clear and easy to use user interface that is interchangeable thanks to skins. It has not yet been translated into Italian but it is extremely simple to use, in some ways even more than mIRC. Download from here.

SeaMonkey

SeaMonkey is a free and open source program that includes in a single package a web browser, an e-mail client, a web page editor and a client for the IRC network. It is based on Mozilla Firefox’s Gecko navigation engine and is completely in Italian. It is available for all major operating systems: Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and is constantly updated. Smuxi it’s a universal IRC client for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux based on GNOME / GTK + which allows you to chat on all servers and IRC channels (publicly and privately) and to download files from the IRC network. It is characterized by a very basic interface and has various advanced features, such as spell checking, full screen display and advanced command management, which make its use particularly comfortable for more experienced users. KVIrc it’s a open, free and portable IRC client (which does not require installation to work) based on Qt GUI toolkit. KVIrc. Its development is followed by a very active developer community, all passionate about IRC. It includes a very easy to use interface (fully translated into Italian) and is characterized by a modular structure that allows you to load the elements not used most frequently only when necessary.
