Having said that, I have nothing else to do, except to wish you happy reading and have fun!

Preliminary operations

IPod programs

Now I will list those that, in my opinion, are the best iPod shuffle programs, iPod nano, iPod classic is iPod touch. First, however, let me give you some clarifications regarding the use of the same.

Most of the software that I am going to tell you about, only allow access to the device memory after activating the external disk mode. If you have never heard of it, it is an iPod option that allows external software to read and write “directly” on the media player’s memory.

Activation of this functionality can be done through iTunes, on Windows, or through the Finder of macOS, and is only required for iPod classic, iPod nano and iPod shuffle. On iPod touch, however, there is no need to do this. Clear? Well, let’s move on!

IPod programs

If you use Windows, proceed first with the download of iTunes: connected to his main page and, if you have the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system, click on the button Get it from Microsoft, to connect to the operating system store. Then press the buttons Install / Play is Open the Microsoft Store and, once the store screen is open, click on the button Get / Install, to start the download and installation of the program.

If, however, you are using an older version of Windows, click on the button Download iTunes for Windows now (64-bit) and wait for the “classic” installation package of the program to be downloaded to your computer. When the download is complete, start the file obtained and press the buttons in sequence Forward, Install, Yup twice in a row e end, to complete the installation of the software. For further explanations, I refer you to reading my guide on how to install iTunes for free.

Regardless of the chosen installation method, you are now ready to enable iPod disk mode: after starting iTunes, connect the iPod to the computer using the USB cable, click onreader icon which should appear in the upper left part of the software and then on the item Summary, which is located on the left sidebar.

Finally, put the check mark next to the item Enable use as disk, if it isn’t already there, and click on the button apply to confirm the change made. Where the item was already checked and not clickable, it means that the media player can already be used in this mode.

IPod programs

Up Mac, the steps to be taken are not very dissimilar from those seen for Windows but, if you use macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, you must act through Finder. After connecting the Apple player to the computer using the USB cable received supplied, start the Finder macOS (the icon of smiling cartoon which is on the bar Dock) and click on first name of the iPod that appears in the left sidebar, under the heading Devices.

Now, locate the tile Options, put the check mark next to the item Enable use as disk, if it is not present, then click on the button Apply / End and wait for the change to take effect. If the aforementioned item is already selected and cannot be changed, it means that the disc mode is active by default.

If you are using a version of macOS prior to 10.15 Catalina, you must proceed via iTunes (program present “standard” on the Mac), following exactly the same instructions already seen for Windows.

Best iPod programs

Having made the necessary clarifications of the case, it is time to get to the heart of this guide and to show you what are, currently, the best programs dedicated to the management of iPod. And guess what, they are the official Apple software!

iTunes (Windows)

Best <a href=><noscript><img class=iTunes is the official management program for Apple devices on Windows (and older versions of macOS). Through it, you can easily transfer music from your computer to your iPod, view the files on it and act on the synchronization and element management settings. If you do not yet have iTunes, you can download and install it by following the steps that I have provided you in initial chapter of this guide.

Once the program has started, connect the iPod to the computer using the USB cable received supplied and wait for the software to recognize the player: after identification, you should see an iPod icon appear in the upper left corner of the iTunes screen.

By clicking on the icon in question, the device management options are displayed: through the items in the left sidebar, you can act on the backup and synchronization settings of data, music and any other available elements (section Settings); to view the contents of the device, play the various elements (e.g. music) or view its details, use the items below Device, which always resides on the left sidebar.

Clearly, depending on the iPod model you have, the items may be different: if, for example, you have iPod classic, you will only see options related to music synchronization / playback; if, on the other hand, you have a iPod touch, you will have the possibility to manage, in addition to multimedia tracks, also videos, photos, documents and any other files shared via app.

However, to apply any changes, remember to press the button Synchronize / Apply (bottom right) at the end of each operation.

Note: synchronizing iTunes with iPod Touch requires authorization to access the device memory. So, after connecting the media player to your computer, remember to authorize access to memory by first touching the button authorize that appears on the screen and then entering the unlock code of the reader.

Finder (macOS)

IPod programs without iTunes

If you use a Mac equipped with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, you should note that iTunes is no longer present in the operating system: its features, in fact, have been integrated into the Finder and in the other predefined macOS programs, including the application Music.

If you are interested in defining the synchronization options for music (as well as for videos and other categories of documents, if you have an iPod touch), connect the player to the Mac via USB cable, start on Finder of macOS, click on first name of the iPod that appears on the left sidebar, next to the item Devices and select the card relating to the items you intend to synchronize (e.g. Music). Remember, at the end of each modification, to click on the button Synchronize / Apply, to make it effective.

If instead you want to view or play the songs in the player’s memory, start the application Music of macOS and click on first name of the iPod, which is on the left sidebar, under the wording Devices. Easy, right?

IPod programs without iTunes

If you prefer to avoid the use of iTunes or del Finder of macOS, or if both software have failed to meet your expectations, you will be pleased to know that you can manage the iPod through some alternative programs, equally valid. However, in order to use them easily on Windows, iTunes must still be installed in the system, for driver reasons; however, the opening of the program is not required at any time.

Sharepod (Windows / macOS)

IPod programs without iTunes

The first solution I want to tell you about is Sharepod: a free program, available for Windows and macOS, that allows you to copy music from iPod to computer and vice versa, without the need for iTunes / Finder intervention and in an extremely simple way.

Before going on, however, I must make a clarification: starting from macOS 10.15 Catalina, it is no longer possible to transfer the songs from the iPod to the Music media library, since the sharing of the lists in XML format has been eliminated. However, you can copy the songs on the Mac as an .m4a file and then import the entire folder into the computer’s music library later.

The latter limitation, however, is not present on Windows: if necessary, the imported files can be copied directly to the local iTunes library, provided that the sharing of the library in XML format with other programs is enabled. To be able to do this, open iTunes, go to the menu File> Preferences …, click on the tab advanced, put the check mark next to the item Share XML from iTunes library with other applications and press the button OK, to confirm.

Anyway, to get Sharepod, connect to this website, push the button Download Sharepod, wait for the software installation package to be downloaded to your computer and, at the end of the download, open it.

Now if you use Windows, click on the button Yup, choose the language to use (presumably Inglese) from the drop-down menu that is proposed to you, click on the button OK and then on Next twice in a row. Next, affix the check mark next to the box relating to the installation of QuickTime (this allows you to play the files in the iPod memory without first downloading them), click on the button Next three consecutive times and finish the setup by clicking on the buttons install is Finish.

Up MacOSinstead, the thing is much simpler: after launching the .dmg package downloaded, drag the icon to Sharepod in the folder Applications Mac and you’re done!

From this moment, the steps for the Microsoft and Apple operating systems are equivalent: after starting the program and connecting the iPod to the computer via USB cable, wait for the media player to be recognized and use the main screen of the software to perform the operations of your interest.

For example, if you want transfer songs from iPod to computer, you have to select them one at a time (with the help of the keys Ctrl is Shift keyboard) and use the drop-down menu that is at the bottom right of the desired option (e.g. Export Selected Item (s) to Folder). Easy, right?

iMazing (Windows / macOS)

IPod programs without iTunes

There is a step higher iMazing, a complete program dedicated to the management of Apple-branded devices, including, of course, iPods. Although the program can be downloaded completely free of charge, both on Windows and on macOS, it provides limits on the operations that can be performed: for example, a maximum of 50 music tracks (or other elements) can be transferred in total, in both directions. To bypass this limit, you need to purchase the full version of the software, with prices starting from € 39.99.

To try iMazing, connect to his main page, push the button Free download and wait for the software installation file to be copied to your computer. When the download is complete, start the aforementioned file and, if you use Windows, press the buttons Yup is Forward, put the check mark next to the item I accept the terms of the license agreement and complete the installation of the program by clicking in sequence on Forward twice in a row, then up Install is end. If you use MacOSinstead, you just have to drag the icon of iMazing in the folder Applications Mac, using the Finder screen that is proposed to you.

Once the software installation is complete, start it and click on the button Later, to skip the purchase of a paid user license; then, connect theiPod to the computer using the USB cable received supplied and, if you have an iPod touch, unlock it and authorizes communication between the devices, responding affirmatively to the warning that appears on the reader display (and also entering, when required, its unlock code).

The game is practically done: you just have to click on name of the iPod located in the left sidebar and select the icon related to the function you are interested in using (e.g. Music, in order to transfer files from iPad to computer, and vice versa).

Other iPod programs

Other <a href=><noscript><img class=In addition to the solutions that I listed to you throughout this guide, there are others too iPod programs equally valid and that lend themselves to a fair variety of application scenarios. Here are some of them.

  • YamiPod (Windows) – is a program mainly dedicated to the management (and transfer) of music tracks stored in the iPod memory. There is also a version for macOS but, currently, it is not compatible with versions of the operating system equal to or greater than 10.15 Catalina. It’s free.
  • File Explorer (Windows) – after activating disc mode, you can access certain areas of the iPod memory, including the one containing the music library, also through the Windows File Explorer, exactly as you would on a common USB flash drive.
  • MediaMonkey (Windows) – is a program, aesthetically very similar to iTunes, which allows you to quickly manage the iPod music collection, providing tag editing and intelligent management of playlists and play queues. It’s free, with the possibility of unlocking additional paid functions.
