How to update applications: After taking a peek on your friend’s cell phone, you realized that the same apps on your smartphone don’t offer the same features. Well, most likely it’s because you haven’t downloaded the latest update available for them. How do you say? Have you already thought about it yourself but don’t have the slightest idea how to do it? No problem, I’ll explain it to you. Take five minutes or so of free time, make yourself comfortable and immediately start concentrating on reading this guide on how to update applications… you will see that in the end you will have perfectly clear ideas on what to do!

In the following lines I will in fact show you, in a simple but detailed way, all that is necessary to do to be able to update applications on what are the main mobile platforms of the moment – Android, iOS And Windows Phone – in such a way as to allow you to perform this operation without problems and be able to use the most recent versions of all the apps on your device.

How do you say? You are interested in this, but being impractical in terms of new technologies, are you afraid of not being up to the task? Come on, don’t try to find excuses! I repeat, updating applications is a real child’s play and I am sure that even if you do not have high technical skills in this regard, you will be perfectly able to complete “the mission” in a short time. Let it bet?

Caution: Regardless of the mobile platform in use on the device, to update applications it is essential that it is connected to the Internet. Considering that particularly substantial updates involve – as easily understood – a huge consumption of traffic, I suggest you carry out the update operations via Wi-Fi and not when you are connected to the data network in order to avoid any extra charges by your telephone operator mobile (obviously it all depends on what your plan provides and the amount of GB made available by your operator).

Update applications on Android

Manually

Do you use an Android smartphone or tablet? So if you want to update applications, all you have to do is grab your device, access the screen where all the apps are grouped, press the icon of Google Play Store (the white bag icon with the “play” symbol in the center), tap on the ad icon Hamburger located at the top left and check that your Gmail account is selected in the side menu. In case of problems, log in with the correct Google account following the instructions you find in my tutorial on how to switch play store accounts.

Then select the item My apps and games from the bar that appears laterally. Once this is done, press the icon of the application to be updated, press the buttons Refresh And I accept and that’s it. If you want to update several apps that are waiting to be updated at the same time, go back to the menu My apps and games of the Google Play Store and presses the button Update everything located at the top right.

Once you have started the procedure by which to update applications on Android, one will be shown to you in correspondence with the reference app or apps bar indicating the progress of the download and installation of the update.

Automatically

As well as as I indicated in the previous lines, on Android it is also possible to update applications automatically, without you having to lift a finger. You ask me how? Simple: all you have to do is go to the Play Store settings and check that the automatic app update function is active (and if not, activate it!).

To do this, open Google Play Store, presses on the ad icon Hamburger located at the top left and check that your Gmail account is selected in the side menu. Then select the item Settings from the left sidebar, go up Automatic app update and, if you have a smartphone or an Android tablet with SIM support, put the check mark next to the item Automatic app update via Wi-Fi only (in this way you will not go to consume data when you are connected in 3G / LTE) or next to the voice Automatically update apps at any time (if you have no limitations in terms of cellular data traffic erosion you can also opt for this option) and that’s it.

From now on, all applications installed on your smartphone or tablet should update automatically.

Update applications on iOS

Manually

How to update applications

If, on the other hand, you have an iPhone or an iPad and you are interested in understanding how to proceed to be able to update the applications, the first step you must take is to grab your iDevice, access the home screen of the device, keep your finger pressed on the icon of App Store (the “A” on a blue background) and select the item Updates from the menu that opens. Alternatively, you can open the App Store and press onlittle man icon (top right).

If you are using a version of iOS / iPadOS older than 13, you have to follow another path: press the icon of App Store (the “A” on a light blue background), scroll down the screen and make sure you are logged in to your Apple account (at the wording Apple ID: you should find your e-mail address or the one used on the account). If this is not the case, fix it immediately by pressing the button Log in and typing in your login details. Next, select the tab Updates located at the bottom right.

Now, locate the icon of the app you want to update and tap on the button Refresh placed on the side to “manually” download the latest version of the app. If there are more apps to update you can also carry out the various updates available simultaneously. To do this, just press on the voice Update everything.

Once you have started the procedure by which to update applications on iOS you will see, in correspondence with the reference app or apps, a headband indicating the progress of the download and installation of the update.

If you don’t see the update button next to the application you want to update (and in its place it says You open), it means that the latest version of the application is already installed on your device. If, on the other hand, the app icon of your interest is completely absent, obviously the application has already been updated or in any case there are no recent updates to report.

Automatically

How to update applications

Don’t you want to update applications from time to time and would you like to know if it is possible to carry out the various updates available automatically without you having to do anything? Well, in this case I have good, indeed excellent news to give you: it can be done, and how! To do this, you just need to enable the appropriate automatic app update feature.

So go to the section Settings iOS device (the gear icon on the home screen) and select the item iTunes Store and App Store from the screen that opens. At this point, make sure that the levers relating to the options App And App updates both are active and that’s it. If the levers are not active, you can bring them up ON simply by pressing on it in order to activate the automatic download of app updates.

If you are using an iPhone or an iPad in the Cellular version, I also suggest that you make sure that, always in the settings screen relating to updating the apps, there is no active lever on the option Use cellular data, otherwise your device will download updates in 3G / LTE and will quickly consume the maximum amount of data traffic that may be foreseen by your data plan!

In case of problems

Even if you have strictly followed the instructions for updating applications above, are you experiencing problems and are unable to update your apps? So much to combine try a turn off and on again your smartphone or your tablet, maybe it is just some momentary “catch” that in this way you can be able to solve.

Even on mobile devices, a bit like with computers, it can happen that processes, functions and settings no longer perform their task due to some momentary and unknown error giving many headaches which, fortunately, in most cases can be solved by a very simple restart of the device.

If even doing so the situation does not improve, I suggest you try to solve it by going to delete the cache of the related digital store or the reference app. As for Android, I’ve explained how to do it in my guide on how to clear android cache. In the specific case of iOS, however, you can follow the instructions I gave you in my tutorial on how to clear iPhone cache and in my post on how to free up space on iPad.

Other useful tips that you can consider, but only if you are using an Android device, are those of update the Google Play Store (maybe you are using a too dated version of the latter that is no longer able to perfectly fulfill its purpose) and / or to carry out one new installation. To find out how to do this, you can follow, respectively, the instructions I gave you in my posts on how to update play store come on how to install google play.

As a last resort, you can evaluate the complete reset of the device. As for Android, you can find out how to do it by reading my guide on how to reset android. For iOS, find all the information you need in my tutorials on how to reset iPhone And how to reset iPad. In the case of Windows Phone, however, you can follow the instructions I gave you in my article on how to reset windows phone.
