How to deactivate the Messenger account
If you don’t know how to deactivate your Messenger account , in the next lines you will find all the information you need to do this whether you use the service on Android or iOS. I already anticipate that to deactivate your Messenger account, you must first deactivate your Facebook account and then deactivate Messenger from the app of the same name available for smartphones and tablets. In fact, at the time of writing, it is not possible to disable Messenger on PC.
Note: By deactivating your Messenger account, you will not destroy all sent messages. The respective recipients could keep this information, for example through a simple screenshot .
Let’s start with Android . As I mentioned earlier, to delete your Messenger account, you must first deactivate your Facebook account. To do this, start the app of the well-known social network (the one with the white “f” on a blue background), access its settings by pressing the symbol ( ≡ ) located at the top left and, in the screen that opens, tap on the Account Settings item located in the Support and Settings section .
In the screen that opens after pressing on the item “Account settings”, first tap on the General item and then on Manage account . Then select the Deactivate option which is located under the Account item , enter your account password in the relevant field, press the blue Continue button and follow the instructions that appear on the screen to deactivate your account.
If you encounter any difficulties during the deactivation procedure of your Facebook account, please read my guide in which I explain in detail how to deactivate a Facebook account and you will find all the information and details you need.
As soon as you have completed the deactivation procedure of your Facebook account, you can proceed with the cancellation of your Messenger account. To do this, start the Messenger app, press on your photo which is located at the top right and, in the screen that opens, tap on the item Privacy and terms which is located at the bottom. On the next screen, press the Deactivate Messenger item and, to deactivate your account, enter your password and press the Continue button . Did you see that it wasn’t that difficult to deactivate your Messenger account on Android after all?
If you want to reactivate your account, log back into Facebook using your credentials and Messenger will be automatically reactivated as well.
Do you want to deactivate your Messenger account on iOS ? The procedure to follow in this case does not differ much from the one I explained to you in the previous paragraph. Even on iOS it is in fact necessary to deactivate your Facebook account and then deactivate the Messenger account from the relative app. Let me explain exactly how you must “move”.
First, start the Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad, access the social network settings by pressing the symbol ( ≡ ) and, in the screen that opens, tap first on the Settings item and then on the Settings item . account.
On the next screen, press the General> Manage account items and press the Deactivate option that you find in the Account item . At this point, enter your account password and, to complete the procedure, press the blue Continue button, carefully following the instructions that appear on the screen.
In case of problems, do not hesitate to read the article in which I explain in more detail how to deactivate a Facebook account. I am sure you will find this reading very useful as well.
As soon as you have completed the deactivation procedure of your Facebook account, deactivate your Messenger account by starting the app of the same name and pressing on your photo at the top left. In the screen you see on the screen, tap on the item Privacy and conditions , press on the item Disable Messenger , enter your password and press the Continue button to complete the procedure.
Of course, you can retrace your steps and reactivate your Messenger account by logging back into Facebook using your login credentials. The reactivation of the Messenger account will take place automatically.
Other solutions to consider
If deactivating your Messenger account seems like too drastic a solution to take, but you still want to feel comfortable for a while by not receiving notifications from your chats, you can opt for one of the workarounds listed below.
A first solution that you can adopt to not be disturbed on Messenger is to be offline . By blocking others from seeing when you log into Messenger or not, you may discourage the usual “nuisances” from contacting you at any time of day or night.
To be offline, thus not allowing others to see the green dot next to your name, first start the Messenger app on your device and press the bulleted list symbol at the bottom (on iOS the option is called People ). In the screen that opens, tap on the Active tab and set the switch lever next to your name to OFF .
As you can see, the green dot that distinguishes the online status has disappeared from your name and, for this reason, other users will not be able to see when you are online. For ” par condicio ” you too will not be able to see when others are online, unless you restore the setting you just changed by moving the switch lever next to your name back to ON (always in the Active tab ).
The procedure to follow on a PC to be inactive is just as simple. To be offline, you must first connect to the Facebook Messenger website , log in by entering your login credentials in the appropriate fields and click on the Login option . Once logged in, click on the gear symbol located at the top left, click on the Settings item , move the switch lever next to your name to OFF and click on the Finish item .
Also in this case, what was said previously applies: others will not be able to see when you are online, but you too will not be able to do the same thing, unless you restore the setting you just changed by moving the lever of the switch located next to it back to ON. to your name (always in Messenger Settings ).
A much more effective solution than the one I indicated in the previous paragraph is to disable notifications from Messenger .
To temporarily disable notifications on your Android device , start the Messenger app, tap on your photo, press the Notifications and sounds item and move the lever of the switch located next to the Yes item to OFF . In the box that appears on the screen, choose how long to disable notifications and confirm the operation by pressing the OK button .
To disable notifications temporarily on your iOS device , instead, start the Messenger app, tap on your photo, press the Notifications item and move the lever of the switch located next to the item Do not disturb to ON . In the box that appears on the screen, tap on one of the available options and choose how long to disable notifications.
If you want to disable notifications permanently, you need to access the settings of your Android or iOS device. To do this on Android, go to Settings> Notifications (or Sound and notifications ) > Applications (or Notifications> App notifications ). In the screen that opens, press the Messenger icon and move the lever of the switch located next to the item Block (or Block all ) to ON . To restore notifications just move the switch to OFF , again from the same screen.
To disable Messenger notifications permanently on iOS, instead, start the Settings app and go to Notifications > Messenger . Then, move the toggle of the switch next to the Allow notifications item to OFF . If you change your mind , reset the notifications by moving the switch on the same screen back to ON .
Log out of Messenger
Another solution you should consider is to log out of Messenger . Since the app of the IM service of the same name does not provide this option, you will have to “go through” the Facebook app or, if you have an Android device, delete all the app data from your device’s Settings.
To disconnect from Messenger on Android, start the Facebook app , tap the symbol ( ≡ ) and select the Account Settings items (at the bottom of the screen) > Security and access . Then go to the Devices section from which you are logged in , press the active session on the Android device from which you are logged in (or, alternatively, tap on the item Disconnect from all sessions to close the sessions in one fell swoop. open on all your devices), tap on the symbol (…) and, in the menu that appears, press the Exit item .
On iOS , however, you have to start the Facebook app , tap the symbol ( ≡ ) and go to Settings (at the bottom of the page) > Account settings . On the next screen, press the Security and access item , go to the Where are you logged in section , select the Messenger session you want to close, tap the symbol (…) and select the Exit item in the menu you see on the screen to close the session you are interested in. If, on the other hand, you want to close all active sessions, tap on Disconnect from all sessions that you find further down.
Did you see that it was not difficult at all to disconnect from Facebook Messenger? I told you, it was simpler than you could imagine. On Android , you can also opt for another solution: delete all app data from the settings of your smartphone or tablet.
To do this, go to Settings > Applications (or Apps ) > Messenger . In the screen you see, presses on the Storage (or Memory ) option and, finally, tap on the Delete data item to delete all the data related to your Messenger account that are saved on your device.
Unsubscribe from Facebook
The procedures I have just explained to you are used to deactivate Messenger while keeping the Facebook account active. If you want to completely delete the Messenger account, you must delete your Facebook account thus losing completely access to the social network.
If you are convinced that you want to adopt such a drastic solution, read my tutorial on how to unsubscribe from Facebook and put into practice the instructions in it.
