How to Transfer Videos from Android Phone to PC
If your smartphone is equipped with an Android operating system , this is the section of the tutorial that is right for you: below I will explain how to transfer the videos stored in memory on both Windows and Mac computers.
Before proceeding, make sure that the computer has “standard” USB ports (USB-A), which can be used to take advantage of the USB cable supplied with the smartphone; if there are only USB-C ports (whose connector can be inserted in both directions), you must equip yourself with an adapter or a USB-C / USB-A hub, which you can buy for a few euros, even online.
Transferring one or more videos from the Android phone to the Windows computer is extremely simple, and the procedure is more or less the same for all devices.
Except for small details relating to the menus displayed on the smartphone, the information I am about to give you should apply more or less to all versions of the Google operating system. So, if you are looking for a guide on how to transfer videos from Huawei to PC , from Samsung to PC or from devices of other manufacturers, you can safely follow the instructions in this chapter.
That said, no more chatter and let’s take action: first, connect your device to your computer via USB and set it to File Transfer mode . To do this, after connecting the two devices together, call up the Android notification area , tap on the ” balloon ” relating to the USB options and put the check mark next to the item File transfer (MTP) , visible on the screen (or in the overlay panel) that appears immediately after.
Once this operation is completed, you just have to open the Windows File Explorer and click on the name of the previously connected smartphone, visible in the left sidebar; if you do not see it, first select the item This PC and then double-click on the device icon , which should appear on the screen.
Now you just have to go to the folder where the movie of your interest is stored and copy it to your computer, exactly as if you were using a “classic” USB key; for your information, the videos captured with the camera are in the DCIMCamera , DCIM100Andro or similar folder : the precise name of the same may vary depending on the version of Android on your device.
Alternatively, you can take advantage of the Windows automatic import feature : to do this, after connecting the phone to the PC via USB cable, call up the Android notification area , touch the USB Options item and set the phone in Transfer mode of photos (PTP) , using the panel that appears later.
Once this is done, open the Windows File Explorer, click on the words This PC resident in the left sidebar, right-click on the icon of the phone just connected and choose the item Import images and videos , from the proposed context menu.
Following this operation, Windows should start analyzing the smartphone memory and identify the multimedia elements present. If everything went well, you should now see the window for importing photos and videos: if you prefer to change the default saving path (the Windows Pictures folder ), click on the More options item , located at the bottom of left.
Now, put the check mark in the box corresponding to the item Review, organize and group the items to import , click on the Next button and use the next window to choose the videos to import to your computer, or to divide them into groups.
If necessary, click on the Expand all item to preview each item. Having made your choice, click on the Import button and wait patiently for the chosen files to be copied to the Images folder , or to the one you chose during the configuration phase. More info here.
As an alternative to connecting via USB, if on your smartphone you have activated the backup of photos and videos via a cloud service, such as Google Photos or Amazon Photos , you can access the relevant web panel or install the relevant client on your PC and download the videos. from the Internet, without establishing a physical connection between the two devices. For more detailed instructions on Google Photos, you can follow my tutorial dedicated to the topic.
Again, if your computer supports Bluetooth , you can transfer files (including videos) from your smartphone to your computer via this wireless technology: I’ve explained how in this tutorial.
If yours is a Mac , you can easily access the contents of the Android memory using Android File Transfer : an official free tool that allows macOS to correctly recognize devices animated by the Google operating system and to view (and copy) the files contained in the latter.
To get it, connected to this website , click on the Download Now button located in the center of the page. Once you have the installation file (e.g. androidfilestransfer.dmg ), open it and drag the Android File Transfer icon into the Applications folder of macOS, to install the program. Next, open the latter for the first time and wait for it to close again, to set it up correctly.
Starting from this moment, every time you connect an Android device to the Mac, Android File Transfer will open: if necessary, after connecting the two devices via USB, set the smartphone in file transfer mode (or PTP) , calling up the Android notification area and tapping on the “balloon” relating to the USB options .
After recognition, to access the videos captured by the camera, go to the DCIMCamera folder (the videos are generally saved in .MP4 format); to copy a file from Android to Mac, all you have to do is drag it from the Android File Transfer window to the folder you prefer (e.g. the Desktop).
Alternatively, if you are interested in importing the videos into the Photos application (possibly synchronizing them with the iCloud library), do this: after starting the latter application and connecting the smartphone via USB, set the latter in photo transfer mode (PTP) as I indicated earlier.
Then, return to the Photo window, then select the Android smartphone icon and select with a click the movies to be saved in the memory; finally, click on the Import [X] items button to import the selected videos into the Photos archive. More info here.
Even on a Mac, you can transfer videos from your smartphone to your computer wirelessly via a cloud backup service, such as Google Photos or Amazon Photos , or using Bluetooth technology .
How to transfer videos from iPhone to PC
Even that of transferring videos from iPhone to PC is a far from complex undertaking: it is sufficient to have, in addition to the computer, the Lightning / USB cable supplied with the “iPhone by”.
If the video of your interest is stored in some app that does not provide access to the photo gallery, remember to save it in the device memory before proceeding: to do this, select the video in question, touch the share symbol that appears on the screen ( the square with the up arrow ) and choose the Save video item from the panel that is shown below. Remember that the iPhone screen must remain unlocked during memory analysis and data import .
Also, check that your computer has “standard” USB (or USB-A), which you can use to connect the cable supplied with your mobile phone; if you only have USB-C ports available (whose connector can be inserted both ways), get a USB-C / USB-A adapter or hub, which you can buy for a few euros, even online.
To transfer a movie from the iPhone to the computer, you must first install iTunes : although the software is not useful in a “direct” way, it is essential to download it and make the association between PC and “iPhone by”, otherwise the connection will not be successfully established .
So, if you have not yet downloaded the aforementioned program, connect to the Windows 10 Microsoft Store by following this link and click on the Get , Open Microsoft Store and Get buttons to install it.
If, on the other hand, you have a previous edition of Microsoft’s operating system, you can still obtain iTunes from the Apple website : after connecting to the latter, click on the Download now iTunes for Windows button (XX bit) and, to download completed, start the file and press the Next , Install , Yes buttons twice in a row and Finish , to complete the setup. More info here.
At this point, start iTunes , connect the iPhone to the computer using the Lightning cable and wait for the two devices to “recognize” each other; if it is the first time you do this, you must authorize the communication between the phone and the computer, by pressing the appropriate buttons that will appear on the respective displays and typing the unlock code on the iPhone. After this step, you can close iTunes.
Now, start the Windows File Explorer, by clicking on the yellow folder icon that resides in the taskbar, click on the item This PC visible in the sidebar of the window that opens and locate the Apple iPhone icon , which it should have appeared inside.
At this point, right-click on the aforementioned icon, select the Import images and videos item from the menu that appears and wait for Windows to analyze the iPhone memory, looking for multimedia elements.
Once the analysis is complete, the element import screen should open: by default, Windows saves the imported photos and videos in the Images folder , but you can change this behavior by clicking on the More options item , located at the bottom left.
Apply, if necessary, the right settings, put the check mark next to the item Review, organize and group the elements to be imported , click on the Next button and use the next screen to select the videos to copy to the computer (just put the sign next to the respective previews) and / or to divide them into groups. If necessary, click on the Expand all item to preview each item.
Once you have made your choice, click on the Import button and wait patiently for the chosen files to be copied to your computer disk. That’s all!
Alternatively, you can obtain a similar result by opening the Windows File Explorer and going to the path This PC> iPhone> Internal Storage> DCIM> 100 Apple and copying “by hand” the videos of your interest or using the Windows Photos application 10.
Do you prefer to act wirelessly? In this case, if the iCloud Photos service is activated on your iPhone, you can download photos from the web panel or from the iCloud client (therefore from the Internet) following the instructions you find in my tutorial on the subject.
If yours is a Mac , the transfer is even easier, as everything you need is already “standard” on your computer. So, first of all, connect the two devices together using the Lightning cable , unlock the iPhone and, if necessary, authorize the communication by responding affirmatively to the warning that appears on the screen and typing the unlock code on the smartphone.
Once this is done, open the macOS Photos application (if it does not start by itself), using the colored flower icon located in the Dock , click on the iPhone item residing in the left sidebar and, after selecting the movies of your interest with one click, press the Import [X] items button to copy the items to the Photos archive.
If you prefer a “wireless” approach, even without using third-party programs or apps, you can also use AirDrop , the sharing service designed by Apple to share files (but not only) between iPhone, iPad and Mac.
To use it, activate the reception of files on Mac, by going to the Go> AirDrop menu in the Mac menu bar: when the Finder window appears , if necessary, activate Bluetooth and Wi-Fi using the appropriate buttons and intervene on the Allow me to find menu to decide whether to receive files from all or only known contacts . If you have the same Apple ID on your Mac and iPhone, just select the latter option.
Now, locate the video to share on the iPhone, select it, touch the share symbol (the square with the up arrow ) and select the name of the Mac from the AriDrop section , to immediately send the file to the computer (more info here ).
Please note that, if the iPhone and Mac are paired with the same Apple ID, you can use the iCloud Photo Library to automatically keep the videos (and photos) stored in the various devices synchronized, without having to intervene manually.
