How to speed up the Internet Windows 10: Does your PC with Windows 10 installed  seem too slow in online browsing, downloads and other Internet connection related activities? So I bet you would like to understand if you can take some steps to improve the situation, right? Don’t worry: you just happened on the right guide, at the right time.

In fact, if you allow me a few minutes of your time, I can explain all you can do to try to  speed up the Internet on Windows 10 . These are essentially small tips useful for this purpose, such as changing DNS servers and searching for and removing any malware that can slow down browsing. Let it be clear right away: miracles, if there are infrastructure problems on the network, they cannot be done, but I assure you that you will notice some results.

Then? Is it possible to know that you are still standing there? Position yourself comfortably in front of your trusted PC, take a few free moments just for yourself and immediately start concentrating on reading the following. I sincerely hope that in the end you will feel happy and satisfied with what you have learned, as well as, of course, the results obtained. Good luck!

Preliminary operations

Before intervening directly on your PC and, therefore, before trying to speed up the Internet on Windows 10 , there are some preliminary operations that it is good for you to do, in order to understand if the “slowness” you found is attributable to the only computer or is inherent in the Internet connection. To find out more, read on.

Perform a speed test

Speed test Ookla

As I said, the first thing you need to do is try to understand if the connection problems you encounter depend on the performance of the network or on your computer. To realize this, just perform a speed test from a device other than the PC that is slow in browsing online.

So, firstly make sure that the other devices that may be connected to your network are not performing intensive download and / or upload operations , such as sharing data on P2P networks, the use of streaming services and so on, in order not to alter the test results. Another thing I recommend you do, if possible, is to connect the device on which you will perform the speed test to the Internet via Ethernet cable and not via Wi-Fi (type of network subject to interference and performance drops).

That said, open any   Internet browsing browser (eg Chrome ), go to the Ookla speed test website  (the most used speed test in the world), press the Go button  that appears in the center of the screen and wait for the test is started and completed: it should take a few seconds.

At the end, you will be able to view the response and then know the ping values (the time it takes for a packet of data to reach its destination), downloads (the speed of downloading data from the Internet) and uploading (the speed of loading data from Internet) of your connection. As for download and upload, the higher the values obtained, the better the performance of the connection, while for ping, its optimal value must be as low as possible.

If the values returned by the test are in line with the nominal values of the ADSL / Fiber plan that you have subscribed to, it means that the slowness problem is related to the configuration of the PC . If, however, the values are significantly lower, it means that there are problems with the network infrastructure (in this case, you must call the provider to warn him of the thing and have the damage repaired), with the modem (it may be useful to test a different modem) or with the home system (to be checked, if necessary, by an expert).

Improve Wi-Fi signal

Change Wi-Fi router channel

Another thing that I invite you to do to try to optimize the performance of your Internet connection, before intervening directly on the PC with Windows 10, is to change the Wi-Fi channel used by the router , choosing one that is not subject to interference , which, as already mentioned, could disturb the browsing speed.

To perform the operation in question, you must access the configuration panel of the router and act on the section relating to the management of the wireless network . As for the 2.4GHz network , the channels that I recommend you set are the following: 1 , 6 and 11 (the only ones that do not “overlap” each other). If your router also supports the 5GHz network , I inform you that it should not be necessary to change the channels of the latter, as it is less subject to interference. For all the necessary insights, you can refer to my specific guide on how to change the Wi-Fi channel .

Considering that a low speed of the Internet connection could also result from a poor coverage of the Wi-Fi signal, you can also consider relying on the use of  range extenders and Powerline adapters , so as to cover the “dead” areas of your home.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, know that range extenders are aesthetically similar to modems and allow you to easily repeat the wireless signal from other routers located nearby. The powerlines, on the other hand, are devices that use the electrical system to carry the wireless signal throughout the house through adapters to be connected to the electrical outlet. To deepen the discussion, you can consult my buying guides on  Wi-Fi repeaters and Powerlines .

How to speed up the Internet on Windows 10

After completing the preliminary operations above, if you have ascertained that the connection problems are related to your PC, you are ready to go and find out how to proceed to try to speed up the Internet on Windows 10. Below, therefore, you will find all indicated the various measures you can take in order to improve the situation as much as possible.

Monitor network resources

Windows 10 resource monitoring

Sometimes it may happen that some programs, unbeknownst to the user, perform abnormal activities, so to speak, on the PC, “sucking” bandwidth and thus slowing down the Internet connection. To identify them and to interrupt their processes, just monitor the network resources using the special tool in Windows 10.

To use it, click on the Start button (the one with the Windows flag ) located at the bottom left of the taskbar , type  “resource monitoring” in the search field and click on the relevant result .

In the window that appears on the desktop, select the Network tab and sift through the processes listed in the Process with network activity section . The processes that involve the band most are those at the top. In any case, in correspondence with the Sending , Receiving and Total columns , you will find the quantity of data sent, received and overall. On the right, however, there are the graphs indicated the network activity.

To end the process of a program you know (I suggest you do not intervene on the processes that you do not know what they refer to, in order to avoid the interruption of activities that could cause problems), right-click on it and select the End process item from the menu that opens. Then confirm what your intentions are, by clicking on the End process button in the additional window that opens.

If you have doubts about the identity of a process, before terminating it and risking damage, do a search on Google , to understand what it is.

Run an antimalware scan

Malwarebytes Anti-malware

The presence of viruses and malware on the PC can affect, and not a little, the correct functioning of the connection. So, to speed up the Internet on Windows 10 you can also  run a system virus scan . By doing so, you may find toolbars, add-ons and other malicious software that have lurked in the OS and negatively affect the speed of online browsing.

To do this, I recommend opening the antivirus on your computer (if you have not yet installed one on your PC – bad, very bad indeed! – you can remedy it immediately by reading my guide on the best antivirus for Windows 10 ), go to the section through which to start a scan of the entire system and press the button to start the latter . Then wait for the antivirus to scan the PC and, once the response is obtained, if malicious elements are found, consent to their removal .

If the antivirus detects nothing or fails to eliminate any detected malware, contact Malwarebytes Anti-malware . If I have never heard of it, I inform you that it is one of the best anti-malware out there. It is updated regularly to counter all the latest cyber threats and is very simple to use. It’s free, but it’s also available in some paid versions (at a base cost of 39.99 euros / year) that offer additional functions, such as a real-time control system.

To download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware on your PC, go to its website and follow the instructions on what to do that I have given you in my article on the subject . Then start the program and scan the system by pressing the Scan button located at the bottom. Once the procedure is complete, if Malwarebytes Anti-malware has detected threats, click on the button to eradicate them all and you’re done.

Adjust the settings of the P2P software

UTorrent configuration on Windows

The use of P2P programs can cause bandwidth saturation, as I mentioned in the opening step dedicated to performing the speed test . So,  adjust the settings of the P2P software  going to intervene on the limits relating to download and upload speeds  (in fact, do not limit these values, it leads to a saturation of the band with the following slowdown of all activities related to the network), on the number active connections, on ports and so on.

If you usually use uTorrent , to adjust the operation of the program you can refer to my tutorial on how to set up uTorrent , while for what concerns the opening of the doors you can read my guide focused specifically on the subject . As for eMule , however, you can read my article on  how to configure eMule and my post dedicated to opening doors .

You may also find it useful to consult my guides on how to use BitTorrent and  how to use qBittorrent if, in fact, you use BitTorrent or qBittorrent respectively .

Change the DNS

DNS Windows 10

The DNS servers are those that “translate” in real time the addresses you type into the browser and which allow, for example, to visit the Google homepage by typing into your browser address bar google.com instead 74.125.224.72 (which would then be the real site address, i.e. its IP). Considering their function, changing the existing DNS with more performing servers, such as those of Google ( 8.8.8.8; 8.8.4.4), OpenDNS ( 208.67.222.222; 208.67.220.220) or Cloudflare ( 1.1.1.1; 1.0.0.1), helps to  speed up the opening of Internet pages on Windows 10 .

To intervene from Windows 10, click on the Start button (the one with the Windows flag ) that you find in the bottom left part of the taskbar , type “control panel” in the search field and select the relevant result . In the window that opens on the desktop, click on the item Network and Internet and / or the Network and Sharing Center (depending on the type of display set).

At this point, click on the name of the connection in use  that you find on the right, click on the Properties button in the additional window that opens and double-click on the word Internet Protocol version 4 TCP / IPv4 that is in the list The connection use the following elements in the middle of the umpteenth window that is shown to you.

Now, select the option Use the following DNS server addresses , type the address of the DNS servers you intend to use in the Preferred DNS server and Alternative DNS server fields , tick the box located next to Validate settings on exit and confirm the changes made by clicking on the OK button .

Use the right browser

Google Chrome on Windows 10

Another move that can help you surf the Internet faster from your PC with Windows 10 is to use the right browser , or rather a light and fast browser. In terms of overall performance, Edge , the default Windows 10 browser, is not exactly the best in this regard. Consider, therefore, to turn to alternatives that are able to load Web pages more quickly, as in the case of those that I mentioned in my guide dedicated to the best browser for Windows 10 .

If you want advice “on the fly”, I suggest you turn to Google Chrome , which thanks to its high speed, both during startup and when loading pages, and maximum compatibility with all the latest web standards, it is undoubtedly one of the most interesting browsers on the square as regards the purpose in question. If you have not yet installed it on your PC, you can download and install the program by visiting its website and following the instructions on what to do that I provided in my guide on how to install Google Chrome .

Despite being fast in loading pages, Chrome is not exactly light on CPU and RAM, so if your PC is not particularly performing, you could evaluate the use of Firefox , which however is very fast in opening the pages.

Both in the case of Chrome and other browsers, keep in mind that installing and using many extensions can also affect the speed of surfing the Net. The same applies to the toolbars . If this is your case, then I suggest you get rid of the resources that you don’t really need as soon as possible, following the instructions in my guides on how to delete extensions from Chrome , how to delete extensions from Firefox and how to delete the toolbar .

Use Windows diagnostic tools

Windows 10 network diagnostic tool

Windows 10 integrates a practical diagnostic tool that can be useful for identifying and solving any problems that may be encountered in the use of the network or even in case of navigation failure. Using it is very easy and, in addition, in most cases, the problems found are automatically solved by the system.

To use it, click on the Start button (the one with the Windows flag ) located in the bottom left part of the taskbar , click on the Settings icon  (the one with the gear symbol ) present in the menu that opens and , in the window that has appeared on the desktop, click on the item Network and Internet .

Next, find the Modify network settings section , click on Network troubleshooting , wait for the network analysis to be started and completed, then follow the steps indicated in the new window that opens to precisely identify and resolve any problems encountered.

Update the network card drivers

Update the network card drivers on Windows 10

To try to speed up the Internet connection on Windows 10, I also recommend  updating the network card drivers . Often times, in fact, when the network card does not work properly and the computer does not have other hardware problems, making the Internet connection difficult (if not impossible) is a bad driver configuration, i.e. the software that allows the system operating to recognize a component and communicate correctly with it.

That said, to perform the operation in question, click on the Start button (the one with the Windows flag ) located at the bottom left of the taskbar , type in the search field “control panel” and select the result relevant . In the window that opens on the screen, click on the item Hardware and sounds and / or Device management (depending on the type of display set).

In the Device Management window you are now viewing, click on the arrow next to the Network card item , right-click on the name of the network card installed in your PC and choose the Update driver option from the menu that opens.

Then click on the button  Automatically search for an updated driver to start the automatic search for any available drivers. If in doing so no updated drivers are found, also click on the button Search updated drivers in Windows Update . If successful, wait for the installation of the new drivers to complete. Almost certainly, at the end of the operation you will be asked to restart your PC to make the changes effective.

Alternatively, you can update the drivers of the network card “manually”, by downloading them to the PC from the website of the reference manufacturer or by taking them from the installation media that you may have, and choosing the option Search the driver software on the computer afterwards right clicking on the name of the network card and selecting the Update driver option from the context menu.

Girl using the PC

To conclude, I want to give you another tip which, although it may seem the opposite, can allow you to speed up online browsing from your Windows 10 PC: keep well away from all those programs that promise to optimize and speed up the Internet connection .

The latter, in fact, in most cases, do nothing but “mess around” with the system settings, going to create even more problems and slowdowns than there are already.
