How to rotate the mobile screen: A few days ago, you saw a friend of yours using the cell phone with all the screens in horizontal position: you found this possibility very convenient but, at that moment, you were unable to ask him how he managed to obtain such a result. For this reason, now that you have a little more time, you have opened Google to search for some information on the subject, ending up straight on this guide of mine.

Well, I am happy to inform you that you are in the right place, at a time that could not have been better: in the course of this tutorial, in fact, I will explain to you in a clear and simple way how to rotate mobile phone screen, so you can use your smartphone in the position you prefer. In particular, I will show you how to achieve this both on mobile phones with an Android operating system and on iPhones, Apple-branded phones.

So, without waiting a single second more, take a few minutes of free time for yourself and read very carefully everything I have to say on the subject: I’m sure that, at the end of this reading, you will be perfectly able to set the rotation of the phone display however you like. Having said that, there is nothing left for me to do but wish you good reading and have fun!

How to rotate the screen of Android mobile

The rotation of Android, by default, it follows a very simple criterion: whether the phone is in an upright position (or portrait), the elements shown on the display are arranged inside a rectangle with a base smaller than the height.

If, on the other hand, the phone is used in a horizontal position (or landscape), the elements reside within a rectangle with a base greater than the height. In some cases, however, this behavior can be altered: below I indicate the most common scenarios.

  • If the automatic rotation, the screen, even if the phone is turned over, will always remain in portrait mode. You can work around this problem by turning on automatic rotation again.
  • There Home screen device, by default, always remains in portrait mode, even if the phone is rotated and auto rotation is on.
  • There are some app expressly designed to run in one or the other mode and which, in this regard, are able to automatically rotate the screen, regardless of system settings. Other apps, on the other hand, don’t rotate it at all.

So, if that’s your intention rotate the mobile screen bypassing the scenarios that I have indicated above, you may have to manually intervene on the device settings, or use third-party apps: I’ll explain everything in detail below.

Turn on automatic rotation

Turn on automatic rotation

If the screen of Android remains stationary in its position, even when you physically turn the phone, it is very likely that the automatic rotation has been disabled.

Rehabilitating it is really simple: all you have to do is log into thenotification area of Android, swiping from the top of the screen to the bottom, and press the button automatic rotation (identified by two arrows that meet, from one circular arrow or similar indications). If you can’t see it, do a second swipe to “expand” the notification area and show all available buttons.

Alternatively, you can achieve the same result by acting from the panel of Settings, which you can access by touching the d-shaped icongear located in the drawer of the device: after opening it, enter the section Display, touches the voice Advanced and move up ON the lever relative to Automatic rotation. In some cases, you may need to place a check mark next to the box with the same name instead.

From now on, your phone screen will automatically rotate horizontally or vertically, depending on how you position it. This change, however, does not affect the Home screen, which will still remain in portrait view: however, you can still change this behavior by following the instructions that I am about to give you in the immediately following section.

Rotate the Home screen

If you also want the Home screen to rotate automatically when you change the orientation of the phone, you have to act on its dedicated settings.

To do this, make a long tap on an empty spot on the aforementioned screen and press the button Home settings (or Home screen settings or other similar names, which vary depending on the Android version) that appears.

Next, locate the entry Allow Home Screen Rotation and move up ON the lever corresponding to it. In some cases (e.g. on Samsung terminals), however, you have to disable the lever Portrait mode only.

If you use a custom launcher, like for example Nova Launcher, the procedure varies slightly: make a long tap on an empty spot on the Home screen, press the button Settings (below) and access the section Appearance.

To conclude and eliminate the rotation block, tap on the drop-down menu next to the item Orientation… and indicates whether to use thedefault of Android, the automatic rotation or if force rotation horizontally or in vertical.

If you are not satisfied with the result obtained with the previous methods, because you would like to force the rotation of all the apps or use the phone with the screen turned upside down (useful if, for example, the mobile phone is connected to the power supply and the charging is located at the top of the terminal), you can contact a third-party app, such as Control Screen Rotation, which is available for free on the Play Store.

Once the app is installed, launch it and move to ON the lever Start service, to make it operational. If you want Control Screen Rotation to start automatically when Android starts, turn on the toggle too Automatic start after reboot.

At this point, you just have to call up the system notification area, locate the comic book related to the app and press one of the available buttons to define the orientation of the screen (from left to right): locked horizontally, locked horizontally upside down, locked horizontally with orientation based on the sensor; vertically clamped, vertically clamped upside down, vertically clamped with sensor orientation; or, finally, unlocked and variable according to the inclination of the phone.

The changes applied in this way will affect both the home screen of the smartphone and the running apps (some of them, such as games, could “bypass” this setting due to the display modes defined by the developers).

How to rotate the iPhone screen

How to rotate the iPhone screen

You did not find the information I have given you so far very useful, because you have an Apple smartphone and would therefore like to know how to rotate iPhone screen?

No problem: I can tell you right away that it is an absolutely feasible operation within a couple of taps but that, unlike what happens on Android, it is far from customizable. Yes it is possible yes activate the automatic rotation of the iPhone screen by intervening through the options of the operating system, but you cannot, for example, use a custom rotation (eg “turn” the screen upside down).

Furthermore, the automatic rotation of the iPhone screen does not affect the Home screen or the system menus, which will always remain in portrait mode, except for the Plus models (iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus And iPhone 8 Plus).

All clear? OK, let’s proceed. For turn off vertical lock iPhone screen, calls up the Control center by swiping from bottom to top, or, on iPhone X and later, by swiping down from the top right corner of the screen.

The game is practically done: to unlock the rotation of the screen, all you have to do is press the icon of padlock surrounded by an arrow (which, in the case of a locked screen, is red on a white background) until it turns off. From now on, you can change the screen orientation by simply rotating the iPhone.

Keep in mind, though, that this setting may be bypassed by some apps (explicitly designed to run in a well-defined orientation).

If you have iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone 8 Plus and, although you have followed the steps mentioned above, the Home screen still does not “rotate”, you may have to reset the zoom level of the elements (in fact, zooming in on the icons can prevent iOS from automatically rotating the screen Home).

How? I’ll explain it to you right away. First, log in to Settings iPhone by tapping thegear located on the Home screen, go to the section Screen and brightness and touch the voice Visualization located in the section Zoom Screen.

At this point, you should see a preview of the Home screen, overlaid by two tabs: With zoom And Standard. To restore the magnification level, tap on the latter and tap the item Tax located at the top right. Done! From now on, the Home screen should also rotate automatically when the screen is unlocked.

In case of problems

How to rotate the mobile screen

Have you followed all the instructions I reported to you in the course of this tutorial but, unfortunately, your phone screen still doesn’t turn around?

In this case, the cause could be found in the physical damage to the gyroscope installed on the smartphone: this sensor, in practice, is able to “understand” all the spatial movements to which the smartphone is subjected, in height, width and depth, including positioning.

If the gyroscope no longer works, the operating system cannot determine the position taken by the phone and, consequently, is unable to rotate the screen correctly. To make sure, you can test its operation via a diagnostic app designed for the purpose, such as Gyroscope Test for Android or EZ-Lab for iOS.

If the result is positive and the gyroscope is actually damaged, there is not much else you can do: my advice, in this case, is to take the phone to an authorized service center and request the replacement of the chip. .

How do you say? Have you already thought about retiring your old smartphone and has this problem definitively confirmed your thesis?
