How to rotate a video on Facebook

After uploading a video on Facebook, did you notice that the movie is seen upside down or turned 90 degrees? It is something that happens. Maybe you held your smartphone upside down while recording the video, or maybe you set the app you used to make the recording wrong … however don’t worry, this is a problem that can be solved in a few clicks, or a few taps, to depending on whether you prefer to act as a PC or smartphone / tablet.

Unfortunately – I’ll tell you right away – you won’t be able to act directly from Facebook or its mobile app, as the functions that until recently allowed you to rotate videos directly from the social network have been removed: for rotate a video on Facebook you will have to act locally, before uploading the movie online, using smartphone or tablet apps or PC software. And if you have shared a YouTube video and want to rotate that, know that you can do everything directly from the famous Google video portal, without resorting to external solutions.

So, are you ready to take action? If your answer is yes, take five minutes of free time, carefully examine the solutions I am about to recommend and choose the one that seems most suitable for your needs. Then follow the instructions below and I assure you that you will no longer upload “crooked” videos on your Facebook profile!

Rotate a video on Facebook with Android

If the video you intend to upload to Facebook was made with a device Android, you can rotate it in the correct direction using Google Photos, the famous Google app that allows you to organize, correct and archive online photos and videos in the system Gallery.

Google Photos should already be included “as standard” on your device, in any case you can get it externally through the Play Store. Then the procedure to follow is very simple: start the app, select the movie to rotate and first press the icon with the adjustment rods (bottom left), then on the button Wheel for the number of times you want to rotate the video 90 degrees and finally on the button Save (top right) to save the changes.

The video will be saved as a new copy of the original video. To delete the latter, open it in Google Photos and first press the icon of Trash can placed at the bottom right and then on the item Move to trash, which appears at the bottom of the screen.

How to rotate a video on Facebook for iOS

You have a iPhone or a iPad? If so, you can rotate a video to upload to Facebook using the iOS version of Google Photos, the application I mentioned earlier in the chapter dedicated to Android (whose operation is identical even on the Apple platform), or iMovie, the video editor included on all iOS devices (as well as on all Macs) and downloadable for free from the App Store.

To rotate a movie with iMovie, launch it on your iPhone or iPad, select the tab Projects, tap the button [+] and, in the box that opens, select the item Movie. At this point, choose the video to edit and presses on the voice Create movie (below) to import it into the iMovie timeline.

Finally, rotate the video by making one rotation with two fingers on the preview of the latter in the iMovie editor (top), press the button end (top left) and export the final result to the iOS Camera Roll by pressing theshare icon (the square with the arrow inside) and selecting the item Save video from the menu that appears at the bottom (in the second column of icons). You will be able to choose between various resolutions for the output file: HD -1080p, HD – 720p, Large 540p or Medium – 360p.

The movie will be exported as a different file than the source video. To delete the latter (therefore the incorrectly oriented video), select it within the app Photo, presses the icon of Trash can located at the bottom right and confirm by touching the button Delete video which appears below.

Avidemux

If you use a Windows PC, you can rotate a video to post on Facebook using Avidemux, a free and open source video editor capable of “digesting” all major multimedia file formats.

To download Avidemux on your PC, connect to the official site of the program, reach the section dedicated to Windows (in addition to being compatible with Windows, the program also works on macOS and Linux) and click on the item win64 xx Final Install (64 bits), FossHub if you use a 64-bit system or on voice win32 2.7.0 Final Install (32 bits), FossHub if you are still using a 32-bit system.

When the download is complete, open the Avidemux installation package (eg. avidemux_xx_win64.exe) and, in the window that opens, click the button first Yup and then on the button Next and then on I Agree, still Next three consecutive times and then Install And Finish.

At this point, to rotate a video with Avidemux, open the program, click on the icon blue folder located at the top left and choose the movie to edit. Once this is done, expand the drop-down menu Video output (in the left sidebar) and select the video format in which you want to save the rotated movie (the video must necessarily be re-encoded to rotate it). Then expand the drop-down menu Audio output, choose whether to keep the current audio track of the video (by setting the Copy) or whether to convert it into another of the available formats (eg. MP3) and use the drop-down menu Container output to choose the container of the output file (so if you want to export the video as a MKV, AVI, MP4 etc.).

Configured the output format, you have to go to the menu Video> Filters (top) and select items Transform> Rotation from the window that opens, by double clicking on them. In the box that appears on the screen, choose whether to rotate the movie 90, 180 or 270 degrees, presses the buttons OK And Close and save the final result by clicking on the icon floppy disk located at the top left.

QuickTime Player

The video you need to rotate is in MP4, M4V or MOV? Use a Mac? In that case you can rely on QuickTime Player, the player present “standard” on macOS, which, perhaps not everyone knows, also includes multiple editing functions.

To rotate a video with QuickTime Player, start the program by selecting its icon from the folder Other of the Launchpad (the rocket icon located on the Dock bar), then go to the menu File> Open File … (above) and choose the movie to edit. At this point, go to the menu Edit (located at the top) and choose one of the available options: Rotate right to rotate the movie to the right, Rotate right to rotate the movie left, Speculate to mirror the video horizontally or Upside down to mirror the video vertically.

Once this is done, go to the menu File> Export As and select one of the available resolutions (eg. 1080p, 720p or 480p) to export the video to one of the folders on your computer. The video will be re-encoded, so it will take some time to save.

If the video you want to rotate on your Mac is not in a QuickTime compatible format, try Avidemux: Its operation is identical to the Windows version I told you about earlier. Instead, the download and installation procedures change.

To download Avidemux on your Mac, connect to the official site of the program and click on the item xx Sierra 64bits QT5 (dmg), FossHub. When the download is complete, open the dmg package which contains Avidemux, drag the program into the folder Applications macOS and start the program by right clicking on its icon and selecting the item You open from the context menu (this is necessary only when the software is first started, to bypass macOS restrictions on applications from non-certified developers).

How to rotate a video on Facebook with YouTube

You shared a video on Facebook that you uploaded to your channel YouTube? Then know that you can rotate the movie in question by acting directly from the famous Google home portal.

All you have to do is connect to the YouTube main page, log into your Google account (if necessary) and click on yours first photo placed at the top right and then on the item Creator Studio, in the menu that appears on the screen.

On the page that opens, select the item Video management from the left sidebar, locate the video to rotate and click on the button Edit relating to the latter. At this point, click on the button Rotate right or on the button Rotate left (bottom right) and save the final result.

You can choose to save the rotated video on YouTube by overwriting the current video by clicking on the button Save placed at the top right, or as a new video, by clicking on the button Save as a new video (also located at the top right).

If you have chosen to overwrite the existing video, you will have to wait a few minutes for the changes to be applied to the video and it will also be rotated on Facebook. Otherwise you will have to share the “new” video on Facebook using the appropriate link obtained by clicking on the button Share (on the video playback page).
