The Home of your smartphone is invaded by icons of applications that you no longer use, am I right? Don’t worry, you can uninstall the ones you don’t need with simple steps, and group the most important ones into folders divided by categories.

First of all, if you want to uninstall an app, tap on its icon for a few seconds, then press on the App information item in the drop-down menu that appeared. On the open page, then tap the Storage space button , then press the Clear storage and Clear cache keys .

This process is very useful for leaving no residue of the application once uninstalled, but you can skip it if you want to reinstall the app in the future. Then, go back and tap the Uninstall button , and then the OK button to confirm the deletion. More info here.

In case you want to organize the applications within a folder , press and hold an app icon, and slide your finger on the display to drag it. Move the application to the Home and place it on top of another app icon to put both of them in a folder.

To rename the folder, tap on it to open it, then type the name in the Untitled folder space . Repeat the process if you want to rename it. To move an app out of a folder, press and hold and move the app icon to an empty space on the Home.

If you want to move an app icon from the list of applications to the Home, swipe from bottom to top (or for some smartphones from right to left), to reach the Android drawer , containing the icons of the apps installed on the device .

Tap for a few seconds on the application you intend to move to Home, then press the Add to Home button to automatically redirect it. Otherwise, drag it with your finger to the position you prefer.

How to reorder widgets on the phone

Android widget

On Android, widgets have long been available to customize your Home. Widgets are sections that display additional information on the screen, updated in real time. coming from applications (e.g. weather conditions or the latest news). I advise you not to activate too many of them , as they reduce the battery life of the phone.

To set a widget on the Home, tap for a few seconds on an empty space on the screen, then select the Widget item from the pop-up menu. In the widget menu you can see the size of the widgets expressed in “squares” that they occupy on the screen.

Select one of the widgets by holding down on it, then place it in one of the empty spaces of the Home. Drag it to the right or left edges to place it on one of the other pages on the phone’s Home.

In case you want to resize a widget on the screen, tap on it for a few seconds, then use the indicators that appeared on the sides of the widget to enlarge or lengthen it. However, some widgets may be locked and cannot be resized.

To delete a widget, simply tap on it for a few seconds and select the Remove from Home item that appears on the screen. I invite you to consult the guide I wrote to know in detail how to put widgets on Android.

Then go to the Album section , usually reachable through the options bar at the bottom. Tap on the top left, next to the ⁝ button, to open the album editing settings menu .

A useful method to keep your photos and videos in order is to rely on the Google Photos cloud service, which through a particularly accurate application allows you to create automatic albums for organizing multimedia content and to lighten the memory of your own. smartphone (eroding the storage space on Google Drive, and therefore with the almost certain need to purchase a paid plan for the same).

How to reorder documents on your phone

Google files

To better order your documents on Android smartphones, my advice is to rely on the Google Files application , a safe and reliable file manager, produced by the Mountain View giant, which also offers the opportunity to keep the own phone.

First, after installing it, open the application and allow permissions to access the internal contents of your phone , such as documents, photos, videos and downloaded files.

Once this is done, the files on the phone are presented in the main screen of the app already sorted into categories called Downloads , Images , Videos , Audio and Documents and other files .

Within the various file categories, a further subdivision is made by folders , which can be viewed through the scroll bar at the top.

By tapping in the Delete submenu , several options are available to delete temporary files that take up space, duplicates or unnecessary content .

As regards the organization of documents, the function called Security folder can be exploited , which allows you to group each type of file within a folder protected by a PIN .

To add a document to this folder, go to the Documents and other files menu , and tap on the icon (⁝) next to the file you have decided to insert. Then tap on the Move to Security Folder item .

Finally, set a four-digit PIN and press the blue Next button . If you want to make a backup of these documents, instead, select the Backup on Google Drive item , on the contrary, choose the Delete permanently option if you want to delete them from the smartphone memory. More info here.

Other useful tips

Samsung

I leave you other useful tips that you can use if you intend to rearrange other sections of your Android smartphone.

  • Do not install apps outside the Play Store – on Android devices it is possible to install applications not present on the Play Store or other certified stores, through the use of APK packages. I do not recommend that you rely on this solution, as it would risk giving access permissions to your files to dangerous applications and exposing your device to malware risk.
  • Do not root – to rearrange your Android smartphone, it is not absolutely necessary to get root permissions. For one thing, you would almost certainly lose the warranty on the device but, above all, you would expose your phone to security risks, as you would grant administrator permissions to some applications.
  • Try changing launchers – launchers are applications that allow you to have alternative Home screens, with more or less advanced functions. You can try different ones than your device’s default one, as some of them offer functions for automatic app organization and allow you to lighten the Home. You can find the best Android launchers listed in my dedicated tutorial.

How to tidy up your phone with iOS

apple

If you are looking for information on how to tidy up your phone with iOS , know that you have ended up in the section of the guide that is right for you. I’ll tell you right away that there are several valid options for putting apps, widgets, photos and documents in order.

The methods I am about to present to you do not require the installation of applications and are completely free. To find out what they are, all you have to do is sit back and read on.

How to reorder apps on your phone

Home ios

If your problem was related to excessive chaos on the Home of the iPhone , my advice is to reorder the applications by choosing clear criteria, or organizing them in specific folders.

To move the icons, tap on an empty part of the Home screen until the icons start to “dance”, then move the apps by dragging them with your finger when they start to vibrate . If you move one icon over another, the system automatically creates a folder in which both are grouped.

The folder name is automatically given by the iPhone based on the category of the grouped applications. If you want to change it, just tap for about three seconds on the folder and select the Rename button that appears . Then type in the new name for the folder.

My advice is to group applications from the same category in folders, such as games , social networks , messaging apps , etc. The glance on the Home will certainly be better and you will no longer have difficulty finding the applications you need quickly. I also recommend that you take advantage of moving apps to uninstall the ones you don’t use.

To do this, make a long tap on the icon of the app you want to delete, then press on the items Remove app and Delete app . Alternatively, to simply move the app to the App Library (the screen where all the applications installed on the device are automatically grouped) without uninstalling it, select the item Remove from the Home Screen . More info here.

If you want to move the app icons that you have hidden in the App Library back to the Home screen, swipe from right to left on the Home screen until you reach the App Library . Then, tap on the search bar at the top, make a long tap on the icon of the app you want to move to Home and drag and place it where you want.

Finally, you can remove the ability to automatically add app icons to Home when they are installed. To do this, open the Settings , and tap on the Home Screen item . Then, select the App Library Only option under the New downloaded apps menu .

iPhone offers a service to remove the apps that are used less, through the function Remove app that you do not use. To activate it, go to Settings , then press the App Store option in the scrolling menu.

Finally, activate the toggle Remove apps you don’t use . In this way, the less used apps will be temporarily uninstalled from the phone, but if they are downloaded from the App Store, the data relating to the last access will remain in the memory. I advise you to use this function only if you have not installed very useful applications but which you rarely open (as can happen in the case of apps to manage passwords or for bank apps).

In addition to these methods, I leave you some useful guides to rearrange the applications on your “iPhone by” in an original way, such as the one on how to change the icons on the iPhone or on how to customize iOS, in which you will also find suggestions for changing the default icons of the apps .

How to reorder widgets on the phone

IOS widget

With the release of iOS 14, Apple introduced the use of widgets on the iPhone home screen. On Android, these options have been around for some time, so if you’ve used a phone with that operating system, you’ll surely know what I’m talking about.

Widgets are squares that occupy a part of the phone’s Home screen and offer quick and constantly updated information from the applications to which they refer. However, use them sparingly, as they help drain the battery quickly .

Inserting a widget on the Home is very useful for keeping track of some information without the need to open the corresponding application, for example the weather conditions, the latest news or the remaining gigabytes. To install a widget on the Home screen, press and hold an empty spot on the Home screen for 3 seconds, until the apps begin to vibrate .

Once this is done, tap the (+) button at the top left and choose, in the menu that appears on the screen, the widgets to be inserted on the Home screen by pressing on them, choosing a format from those available and selecting the blue Add widget button . The widget appeared in the Home can be moved at will as long as it vibrates, otherwise press the minus key (-) to remove it.

Dragging one widget on top of another will create a Smart Collection , which allows you to browse different widgets by scrolling on them. The usefulness of these sections is due to the fact that they allow you to make the iPhone Home Screen more dynamic.

To modify or remove a widget from the Home, tap on it for a few seconds, then press on the item Remove widget or Edit [widget name] . Remember that some widgets are locked, so they can’t be resized or edited.

Furthermore, by swiping from right to left on the first page of the Home, you can access the Today screen (it may no longer be available with the latest updates), in which some predefined widgets that can be moved within the Home are visible. More info here.

How to reorder photos on your phone

Photos ios

Are you planning to reorder photos and videos on iPhone ? Nothing simpler! First, open the Photos application by tapping on its icon, and go to the Album section in the lower toolbar.

What I recommend you do is to reorder your photos and videos through albums , which give you the opportunity to catalog the images and videos on your phone according to the categories they belong to.

In any case, iOS automatically divides the contents of the Photos app by type of multimedia file and by predefined albums referring to the applications in which the images and videos are present, the periods and other criteria established by the application.

To create an album, therefore, after having gone to the appropriate section of the Photos app, tap the (+) button at the top left and select the New album item from the proposed menu.

Then rename the album according to the categories you want to create for the multimedia content. I advise you to use names related to the events during which the photos or videos were taken, such as, for example, “Seaside Photos” or “Wedding Photos” . Either way, hit the Save button when you’ve chosen the right name.

In the pop-up screen, select the photos and videos you want to add by tapping on them and press the End button , located at the top right. That’s all! In this way, every time you go to the Albums section of your smartphone, you will find the photos and videos you are looking for much more effectively.

Finally, I suggest you take a look at my guide on iCloud Photos, Apple’s cloud service that allows you to save photos and videos online and free up space on the iPhone memory by deleting the items already uploaded to the cloud (almost always requires a iCloud Drive paid plan).

How to reorder documents on your phone

Iphone files

On iPhone, documents are collected within the default Files application . Through this file manager it is possible to create folders, rename them and organize individual files by copying them, moving them, associating them with tags and much more.

To open it, simply tap on the folder-shaped icon named File , located in Home or in the App Library . In the Recent , documents are sorted by date of downloading or uploading, and from iCloud Drive , the iPhone’s memory or other cloud storage services supported.

The best way to organize documents is to rely on tags , which can be found in the Browse section . Within it there is, in fact, the Tag submenu , which is characterized by the subdivision of files through a color scale .

To associate a specific tag to a file, or to create a new one, tap for a few seconds on the file of your interest, then press on the Tag item and select one of the predefined iOS tags.

Otherwise, tap on the Add new tag item to access an edit box, in which to type the name you want to give the new label. Once you’ve chosen a name, you can also select one of the colors below, to further customize the tag.

Then tap the End button at the top right to complete the procedure. In the Browse submenu , in the Tags section , the newly created label will now be available. The latter, once selected, will show each document associated with it.

If you want to create a new folder inside File, press the button (…) located at the top right of the Browse menu ; then tap on the item New folder , enter the name of the folder in the edit box open on the screen, then move the files within it.

To proceed in this sense, tap for a few seconds on the files of your interest, then drag them to the folder by scrolling on the screen. I advise you to rename the folders according to your needs (for example by creating folders in which to put only certain file extensions). You can rename, copy, delete files and folders using the context menu that opens with a long tap on them.

Other useful tips

iphone

Finally, here are some other useful tips you can put into practice to better organize your iPhone and always keep it “in order”.

  • Reorder Messages – On iPhone, text messages are collected within the Messages application . It can often happen that dozens of unwanted promotional messages are received. To block them, and thus clean your message box, tap on the message whose senders you want to block. Then, press the number at the top and tap the Info icon . Finally choose the item Block contact . To delete messages from that address, swipe left while holding the box, and tap the Trash- shaped icon and, finally, on the Delete item .
  • Don’t jailbreak – it’s important not to try to unlock your iPhone by jailbreaking it. In fact, this method, in addition to putting the privacy and security of your device at risk , invalidates the warranty and – in the current state of things – does not bring too many advantages over the standard iOS functions.
