How to remove the background with Photoshop on PC
Let’s get straight to the point and see how to remove background with Photoshop on PC: there are various tools, including those included in the famous Adobe software, which you can turn to. Let me explain them to you in detail.
First, import the image you intend to remove the background from in Photoshop. Then open the menu File (located at the top left), select the item You open… from the latter and choose the file of your interest. Alternatively, you can drag the photo you want to edit directly into the program window.
Now, the next step is to activate the mode Quick mask: to do this, click on the symbol rectangle with circle located at the bottom left or select the item Edit in quick mask mode from the menu Select. Next, select the black colour in the palette (located on the right) and, after recalling the Brush tool from the Photoshop toolbar (on the left), “hover” the mouse cursor over the subject you want to preserve. Should you also “color” the background you intend to remove, select the color White from the palette and “pass” the cursor over the area of your interest.
Now, turn off Quick Mask mode by clicking on the icon again rectangle with circle located at the bottom left (or by deselecting the item Edit in quick mask mode from the menu Select). Next, select a selection tool from the Photoshop toolbar (e.g. the tool rectangular selection), right-click anywhere in the selection and click on the wording Select reverse in the opened menu.
If you want to “sweeten” your selection a little, click on the button Refine Edges located on the right and make use of the adjustment rods that appear on the screen to enhance the edges of the selection. Finally, press the button OK.
Once this is done, press the keys Ctrl + C (on Windows) or cmd + c (on macOS), to copy the subject you cut out; then create a new image: to do this, select the item New one from the menu File (top left) and define the length and theheight of the new image, taking care to select the right option regarding the background from the menu Background content (ex. Transparentto get an image with a transparent background; White, to set a white background; etc.). Finally, click on the button Create.
Finally, after creating the new image, press the buttons at the same time Ctrl + V (on Windows) or cmd + v (on macOS), so as to paste the subject you copied previously.
Finally, open the menu Fileselect the items Export> Export As from the latter, choose the format export image (must be PNG or GIFif you have decided to set a transparent background) and click on the button Export.
How to remove the background with Photoshop online
If you want remove the background with Photoshop onlineknow that you can rely on Photoshop on the web, the official online version of Photoshop, which however is paid: only those who have subscribed to the Creative Cloud subscription can use it. Alternatively, you can rely on free third-party solutions, such as Photopea: a free web application running without registration and without installing plugins in the browser (since it is developed in HTML5).
To use it, go to hers home page and, if necessary, translate the service interface into Italian by selecting the item Italian from the menu More> Language. Then import the image to retouch into the site by selecting the item You open from the menu File.
Now, open the menu Selection (above) and click on the entry Magic Cut present in the latter. On the page that is shown to you, you should see the main subject of your photo cut out and with no background. From the tests I have been able to run, Photopea’s “smart” cropping function works quite well. However, if you notice “smudging”, you can tell the service algorithm which portions of the photo to keep or not.
To do this, select the size and the hardness of the brush through the menu located at the top left, click on green square (top left) and “color” the subject of your interest. By clicking on the red square, on the other hand, you can “color” the area to be eliminated, that is the background. To delete any erroneous “brush strokes” made on the photo click on gray square and delete the areas you have mistakenly marked green or red.
To choose the type of background with which to replace the one you have decided to remove, click on square divided into four (top right), if you want to set the background transparent. Click on the instead white square if you want to set a white background or on black square to set a black background.
On the right, you will be able to preview the final result. When you are satisfied with the result, click on the button OK (top right) and, if you don’t need to make any other corrections to the photo, open the menu Fileselect the item Export as from the latter and choose the output format you want to obtain (eg. PNG or GIF if you want to preserve the transparent background).
How to remove the background with Photoshop on smartphones and tablets
If you want to know how to remove the background with Photoshop on smartphones and tabletsI recommend that you use third-party solutions, as the only Adobe app for mobile devices that allows you to do this is Photoshop for iPad, which is only available for iPadOS and is paid (after a 30-day trial , costs 10.99 euros).
One of the best third-party solutions useful for this purpose is Superimpose Studioavailable for Android (see if it is available on alternative stores, in case you have a device without Play Store) and for iOS / iPadOS.
After installing and starting the app, tap the button Create newpress the button (+) Add (top left) and grant it the necessary permissions to work. Then select the photo to act on, crop it (if necessary) using the Superimpose Studio editor you see on the screen and then press the button (✓) (top right).
Once this is done, press the button Cut (bottom left), select the Eraser tool and, after adjusting the size of the brush using the appropriate adjustment bar, pass the eraser over the area to be removed. Via the tool Analyze (top left), it is possible to remove the background completely automatically, but from the tests I have done this function does not always return satisfactory results.
When you are satisfied with the result, press the button (✓) (top right) and then the icon of arrow pointing down (top right) to save it.
