How to remove icons from the Windows 10 desktop

If it is your firm intention to do a little cleaning on the Windows 10 desktop, effectively getting rid of the icons you no longer use, follow the instructions that I am going to provide you in the later parts of this chapter.

Removing an icon from the Windows 10 desktop , be it a file, a program, a folder, a link or any other content, is very easy.

Once you find the icon of your interest, right click on it and select the Delete item  from the proposed menu: in this way, the link, the file or any other corresponding element will disappear from the desktop and will be immediately moved to the trash.

In case of second thoughts, you can easily restore the deleted item: double click on the Trash Can icon  , identify the icon of your interest, right click on it and then on the Restore item  , attached to the menu that is proposed to you. To permanently delete the icon, however, you must choose the Delete item  and confirm the will to proceed, by clicking on the Yes button  .

You will have certainly noticed that the previous steps are not valid for Windows 10 system icons , such as This PC , the Recycle Bin , the User Folder and so on.

The procedure to use to remove these icons from the desktop, in fact, is slightly different: to proceed, right-click on the Windows Start button  , choose the Settings item  from the menu that is proposed to you and, through the next window, go to the Personalization sections  and  Themes  using the appropriate icons. In the following, click on the Settings item  of the desktop icons , located at the bottom.

At this point, using the window that opens, remove the check mark from the box next to the names of the icons you no longer want to display ( Computer , user file , Trash and so on) and click on the Apply and  OK buttons  , to confirm the changes.

Remove all icons from the Windows 10 desktop

To remove all the icons from the Windows 10 desktop (by moving them to the trash) and leave it “clean”, first of all, remove the system icons by following the steps that I have just illustrated to you.

When you are finished, select all the icons still present, “enclosing” them in a rectangle drawn with the left mouse button (you can start from the upper left corner and end in the lower right corner) and, when the icons are all highlighted , release the left mouse button and press the Del key  on the keyboard, to move the latter to the Trash.

If you need a less “invasive” solution that allows you to temporarily hide the icons, without deleting them, I suggest you refer to the instructions in the immediately following chapter of the tutorial.

How to hide Windows 10 desktop icons

How to hide Windows 10 desktop icons

In the previous section of the tutorial, I explained to you how to permanently delete icons from the Windows 10 desktop, “physically” erasing them from the operating system disk and desk. If you find this method too drastic and would like to hide the icons from the Windows 10 desktop without deleting them, you can use a quick option already integrated in Windows.

To do this, right-click on an empty spot on the desktop (i.e. without icons), select the View item  from the context menu and, to immediately hide all the desktop icons, click on the Show desktop icons item  , so as to remove the check mark corresponding to it. If everything went smoothly, the icons will instantly disappear from the desk.

If you wish, you can display the desktop icons again at any time (and with the same arrangement used previously), by right-clicking on an “empty” spot of the same and going to the menu  View> Show desktop icons . Much easier to do than to say, don’t you think?

For some time, you have noticed that the icons on the Windows 10 desktop are accompanied by a  checkbox that, when selected, adds a check mark to them. Although this option is very useful when using Windows 10 from touch-screen devices, it can be particularly annoying when, instead, the computer is used using the mouse.

If this is your case, know that you can easily  remove the tick from the Windows 10 desktop icons in a matter of seconds: first, open the Windows File Explorer by clicking on the yellow folder icon  located in the taskbar, then click on the View tab  , located at the top, remove the check mark from the box next to the item Check  boxes and you’re done. Checkboxes will disappear immediately from all icons.

You did not find the previous steps useful, since it is not your intention to remove the checkbox associated with the desktop icons, but do you intend to eliminate the characteristic  arrow from the shortcut icons? In this case, you should act from the registry, however I advise you to rely on a software solution designed for this purpose, such as  Winaero Tweaker , which can simplify things considerably.

To get this program, connected to its Internet site , click on the Download Winaero Tweaker link  and wait for the package to be completely downloaded to your computer. Since the procedure will require a restart of Explorer, I also recommend that you save all the files you were working on and close the active programs.

Once the compressed archive is obtained, extract it into a folder of your choice and launch the  WinaeroTweaker-xyz-setup.exe file located inside it. Then, click on the Yes and  Next buttons twice in a row, put the check mark next to the item  I accept the agreement , click again on  Next for four consecutive times and, to conclude the setup and start the program, press the Install buttons  and  Finish .

At this point, click on the Yes button  , to pass the Windows security check, and wait for the Winaero Tweaker window to open (alternatively, you can manually start the program using the icon created on the desktop).

When this happens, access the Shortcuts section  located in the left bar (below), click on the Shortcut Arrow option  corresponding to it and affix the check mark next to the No Arrow item  , located in the right part of the program window.

To conclude and remove the arrows from the links, click on the Restart Explorer button  that appears at the bottom left. If you wish, you can restore the arrows at any time, by following the same steps seen above but choosing, this time, the Windows default option  .

How to remove shadow from Windows 10 desktop icons

How to remove shadow from Windows 10 desktop icons

It can happen, sometimes, that the resolution of the monitor in use is not fully supported by Windows 10: for this reason, the “shading” effect applied to the labels that accompany the icons located on the desktop could make the name illegible (or almost) . If you find yourself in this situation, then you can feel comfortable, since Windows allows you to remove the shadow from the desktop icons in a couple of clicks.

How? I’ll explain it right away. First, locate the This PC icon  on the desktop (or in the left part of the File Explorer screen  ), right-click on it and choose the Properties item  from the proposed menu.

Then, click on the item  Advanced system settings , located on the left of the window that opens, click on the  Advanced tab attached to the next screen and then on the Settings … button  , corresponding to the Performance box  .

At this point, move to the Visual Effects tab  , remove the check mark from the box  Use shading for icon labels on the desktop , click on the Apply button  and close all the windows that you have opened, pressing the OK button  .

The shadows of the labels should disappear immediately, improving the rendering of the characters. If this does not happen immediately,  restart your computer to apply the change.
