How to reinstall iTunes on Mac

Do you want to reinstall iTunes on a Mac? Again, you have to move differently depending on the version of the operating system installed on your computer. If you are using macOS 10.14 Mojave, you need to know that this version of the Apple operating system includes the version 12.9.x iTunes, which has not been released on the Internet as a standalone dmg package.

This means that in order to restore this version of iTunes, you have to restore the entire operating system via Time Machine or via the macOS reinstallation function included in Recovery: you can find more information on both procedures in my tutorials on how Time Machine works and how to restore Mac.

Time Machine Restore

You are using a version of macOS equal to or earlier than 10.13 High Sierra? In this case, all you have to do is download the iTunes installer from the Apple website and “overwrite” the version of iTunes already on your computer.

Connect, therefore, to the Apple’s website and click on the blue button Download to download the latest “standalone” version of iTunes (the 12.8.x) on your computer. When the download is complete open the file you just downloaded by double clicking on it (iTunes[versione].dmg) and, in the window that opens, double-click on the file iTunes.mpkg to start the iTunes installation process.

Install iTunes on macOS

Then proceed with the installation of the software following the instructions on the screen: just click on Forward and enter your Mac admin password when prompted. When finished, restart your Mac. The next time you log in, iTunes it should work properly again without causing any more problems.

Didn’t the new copy of iTunes installed on your computer automatically import the music library you previously had in the program? Then start it by holding down the key alt on the keyboard and, in the window that opens, click on the button Choose a library. Then select the folder of your old iTunes library and that’s it. More information on the whole procedure can be found in my tutorial on how to export and import iTunes library.

If the system restore or the “overwriting” of the iTunes copy installed on the computer did not give the desired result, you can try to uninstall iTunes from macOS following the advice I gave you in my tutorial on the subject (but, I warn you , this is quite a lengthy procedure.
