Thanks to the help of relatives who are more technologically savvy than you, you signed up for Facebook and started getting familiar with the world of social networks using your PC. Now, however, you would like to move on to the next step and have Facebook also on your smartphone: a device that you have so far used like a classic mobile phone, just to make calls and exchange some SMS, but which now, fascinated by the potential of social networks, you have decided to use it to its full potential.
What to say? I am really happy that a “not very technological” type like you has repented and has decided to deepen the functioning of services like Facebook, and it is precisely for this reason that I have decided to give you a hand: with today’s tutorial, in fact, I will explain how to put the Facebook icon on your mobile and how to use the most famous social network in the world on both Android and iPhone.
Whether you have a smartphone equipped with the Google home operating system or an Apple “iPhone by”, take five minutes of free time and read the instructions below. In no time at all, you will find out how to install the official Facebook app on your mobile and, if you wish, how to create a link to the web version of the service directly on the home screen of your portable device. Enjoy your reading and have fun!
Put the Facebook icon on an Android mobile
Let’s start this guide on how to put the Facebook icon on the mobile phone talking about Android , and more precisely how to install the Facebook app on terminals equipped with the green robot system; how to add the icon of the latter on the home screen and, if you need it, how to create a link to the Web version of the social network. These are all very simple operations to complete, so let’s ban the chatter and take action immediately!
Install the Facebook app
If you are at the very beginning with the world of smartphones and you want to know how to install the Facebook app on your mobile phone, proceed as follows: open the Play Store (the icon with the colored ▶ ︎ symbol on the home screen), press on the search bar contained in the latter and search for Facebook .
Subsequently, locate the Facebook app icon in the search results (it is the one with the letter “f” on a blue background) and proceed with the installation of the latter by tapping the Install / Accept button . If you are reading this article directly from your Android smartphone, you can install Facebook by pressing this link and pressing the Install and Accept buttons .
Within a few seconds, the application should be downloaded and installed on your smartphone and you should find its icon on the home screen: if this does not access, follow the instructions you find in the next chapter of this tutorial .
Once installation is complete, you can start the Facebook app by tapping on its icon and logging in with your account data (the one you created on your PC). If you don’t have a Facebook account yet, you can create it directly from the app by following the directions in my post on how to sign up for Facebook.
Have you noticed that Facebook is extremely slow on your smartphone? Don’t panic! If you have an outdated mobile phone and / or that does not allow you to navigate easily on Facebook, try uninstalling the standard social network app and downloading Facebook Lite : a “lighter” version of Facebook that gives up some features to ensure smoother browsing and quick on the social network. The procedure you need to follow to install it is the same as the one I showed you earlier for the standard Facebook app.
Note: if trying to install an app from the Play Store you are asked to choose a payment method, press Ignore . If, on the other hand, you are asked to authenticate with a Google account, associate a Google account with your smartphone by following the instructions in my tutorial on how to access a Google account.
Couldn’t find the Play Store on your device? Obviously you have a cheap and / or Chinese imported smartphone that does not include Google services for licensing reasons. However, this does not mean that you have to give up your intentions and you cannot install the Facebook app.
Although you do not have access to the Play Store (a problem, among other things, which can be solved quite easily by following one of the many guides to install Google Play available online), you can install Facebook and any other app by downloading it from a third-party site and installing it via the APK package .
If you have never heard of them, APK packages are packages that allow you to install applications for Android even if they do not come from the Play Store: they are similar to EXE or MSI packages for Windows and, precisely because of their freedom of distribution, they are generally not recommended (they may in fact contain malware). In cases where it is not possible to access the Play Store, however, they are necessary.
To download the Facebook APK package you must first check that the function for installing apps that do not come from the Play Store is enabled on your device. To do this, open the Android Settings menu (the gear icon located on the home screen or in the screen with the list of all the apps installed on the device), go to Security and, if it is not yet active, move the lever relative to the Unknown sources option to ON .
Now you can proceed to download Facebook in the form of an APK package. To download the APK packages you have to go to reliable sites, so I recommend APKMirror , which is managed by AndroidPolice, one of the most famous sites in the world for the Android universe.
Then open Chrome (or the browser you usually use to browse online from your Android smartphone), connect to the site apkmirror.com/apk/facebook-2/facebook/ and go to the All versions box at the bottom. At this point, locate the first version of Facebook that contains neither the word beta nor the word alpha at the end of the name (i.e. the stable version of the app), scroll down the page that opens up to the Download box and proceed to download the app by clicking on the link for the version of Android installed on your smartphone (e.g. Android 4.0.3+if you have an Android version equal to or later than 4.0.3) and then on the DOWNLOAD APK button .
If you are asked to confirm the download, choose to follow the download with the browser in use (eg Chrome ) and answer OK to the warning that appears below.
At the end of the download (which you can follow by calling up the Android notifications menu, with a swipe from the top of the screen to the bottom), open the Android Download app, select the com.facebook.katana.xxx.apk icon and proceed to install the Facebook app by tapping the Next , Install and Finish buttons .
Et voila! In a few seconds you will find the Facebook icon on the home screen of your smartphone and on the screen with the list of all the apps installed on the device. If the Facebook icon was present only in the drawer and not on the home screen, follow the dedicated chapter of this tutorial . If, on the other hand, you encounter difficulties installing APK packages on Android, follow my guide on how to install APKs.
Note: if you want to install Facebook Lite instead of the standard version of Facebook, you can follow the same procedure as above, but by downloading the Facebook Lite APK package . The same goes for Messenger too .
Put the Facebook icon on the home screen
If you have already installed the Facebook app on your smartphone but you do not see its icon on the home screen (i.e. in the main menu of the phone), do so.
- Open the app drawer , i.e. the screen with the list of all the apps installed on the smartphone (you should be able to access it by tapping on the circular icon located at the bottom center of the home screen);
- Locate the Facebook icon and make a long tap on it;
- Drag the Facebook icon to your favorite spot on the home screen and release the grip.
Mission accomplished! Now you have the Facebook icon on the home screen of your smartphone and therefore you can access your social profile at any time by pressing on it. The same, identical procedure can also be followed for the application – and therefore the icon – of Messenger or Facebook Lite.
If you can’t drag the Facebook icon to the home screen following the directions I just gave you, try using an alternative launcher, such as Nova Launcher or Launcher Now . If, on the other hand, you want to move the icon from one page of the home screen to another or from one point on the screen to another, make a long tap on it and drag it with your finger to the position you prefer.
Note: if the Facebook app is installed on the smartphone but you cannot see its icon in the app drawer or on the home screen, perhaps someone has set an additional protection to hide the latter. I told you more about this topic in my tutorial on how to hide apps on Android.
Create a link to the web version of Facebook
Do you use little Facebook and would like to avoid consuming battery and space on your smartphone by installing the official app of the social network? Then you could use the web version of Facebook and add an icon on the home screen for quick access to it. How do you say? Don’t know how to link to a website on the Android home screen? Don’t worry, this is child’s play. All you need is Chrome , the default browser of the green robot’s operating system.
Once Chrome is started, all you have to do is connect to facebook.com , log in to your account (if necessary) and grant the site permission to send you Notifications . Once this is done, press the ⋮ button located at the top right and select the Add to Home screen item from the menu that opens. In the box that appears, type the name you want to assign to the icon to add on the home screen (I recommend Facebook ) and press the Add button to complete the procedure.
A Facebook icon will be created on the home screen, identical to the icon of the official social network app. By pressing on it, Chrome will open and you can browse the social network without installing dedicated applications (and having the ability to receive notifications, always via the browser). Convenient, right? I agree, but know that the Web version of Facebook does not offer all the functions of the official social network app: use it only if you intend to make occasional use of the service.
Put the Facebook icon on the iPhone
Have you just bought an iPhone and don’t know how to put the Facebook icon on it? You have two solutions at your disposal: install the official application of the social network or create a link to the web version of the service on the iOS home screen. Below you will find explained how to proceed in both ways.
Install the Facebook app
Installing the Facebook application on iPhone is really a breeze. All you have to do is open the App Store (the icon of the letter “A” on a blue background that you find on the home screen), select the Search tab located at the bottom right and search for “facebook” in the appropriate field of text.
After searching, locate the official Facebook app icon (the white letter “f” on a blue background), select it and press the Get button to start the download first and then the installation of the same. You may be prompted to verify your identity by using Touch ID , entering your Apple ID password, or using Face ID (if you have an iPhone X ). If you are reading this post directly from iPhone, you can view the Facebook app on the App Store by pressing this link directly .
Once the download is complete, you will find the Facebook icon on the iOS home screen, in the first free position of the screen. To move it to another point, make a long tap on it and drag it to the position you prefer.
After starting the Facebook application, you can access your account on the social network by entering your login data or, if you do not yet have an account, you can create one by following the instructions contained in my post on how to sign up for Facebook.
If you are having trouble downloading the Facebook app because the App Store asks you to authenticate, you probably haven’t yet associated an iCloud account with your device. To remedy the problem, go to the iOS Settings (the gear icon located on the home screen) and tap on the item Log in on iPhone . For more details on the whole procedure, read my guide on how to activate iCloud on iPhone.
As can be easily understood, all the above indications also apply to the official Messenger application , the Facebook messaging service.
Note: if the Facebook application is installed on your “iPhone by” but its icon is not present on any page of the home screen, perhaps there are restrictions that prevent it from being displayed. You can adjust the app restrictions settings in the Settings> Screen Time> App Restrictions (iOS 12 and later) or Settings> General> Restrictions (iOS 11 and earlier) menu . More information about this can be found in my tutorial on how to hide apps on iPhone.
Create a link to the web version of Facebook
Do you find the Facebook application too slow and / or “heavy” for your iPhone? I understand you. In fact, the official Facebook app is among the heaviest and most energy-consuming that you can try on iOS (if we exclude games) and, unfortunately, for owners of old “iPhone by” models, a version is not available ” lightened “as on Android.
The only solution available to those who, like you, cannot use the official Facebook app, is to turn to the Web version of the social network, which does not provide push notifications, does not offer all the functions of the app but is more than enough to view feed news and post new content.
To create a link to the Web version of Facebook on the home screen of your “iPhone by”, open Safari , visit facebook.com and, if necessary, log in to the social network. Then tap on the sharing icon (the square with the arrow inside, located at the bottom of the screen), select the Add to Home item from the menu that opens (more precisely from the third row of icons), type the name you want to assign to the icon (I recommend you leave Facebook ) and presses the Add button located at the top right.
A Facebook icon will be created on the iOS home screen (identical to that of the official social network app) which, if selected, will open the web version of the service in Safari. Easier than that ?!
