How to optimize Windows 10: After reading my guide on how to update to Windows 10 , you have recently updated your trusted computer to the latest Microsoft home operating system and for the moment you can say more than satisfied. However, you would like to be able to optimize OS performance even more so that you can take full advantage of it on your PC. In this regard, I have excellent news to give you: I can explain to you, step by step, how to optimize Windows 10 . By reading the following lines and following my instructions, you will be able to find out everything you can do to try to get the best out of the new operating system on your computer.
How do you say? You do not believe me? Well, you’re wrong! By resorting to the use of some special programs and utilities and deactivating specific non-essential features of the operating system, optimizing Windows 10 is possible, and how. Obviously, it is good that you keep this in mind, I do not promise you miracles. Essentially if your computer is “in bad shape” while trying to optimize Windows 10 with the indications I’m about to give you, you may not be able to obtain the desired results. In any case, as the saying goes, attempting does not harm.
Without this premise, if you are therefore really willing to want to optimize Windows 10 I suggest you get comfortable in front of your computer, take a few minutes of free time and focus carefully on the indications that I am about to give you. Ready? Yes? All right, let’s get started.
Free up disk space
If you want to optimize Windows 10, the first thing I invite you to do is try to free up any space occupied on the hard disk by deleting unnecessary files and errors in the registry.
To easily carry out the operations I have just indicated, I suggest you use the CCleaner program . It is one of the most famous and reliable programs for cleaning and maintaining Windows operating systems (if you remember correctly, I told you in depth in my guide on how to download and use CCleaner ). To download CCleaner on your computer, click here in order to connect to the Internet site of the program and then press on CCleaner.com .
Download is complete open, double clicking on it, the file you just downloaded ( ccsetupxx.exe ) and, in the window that opens, click on the Yes button . At this point, choose Italian from the drop-down menu for selecting the language (top right), remove the check mark from the item relating to the installation of Google Chrome (or other additional software) and complete the setup treading first on Install and then on Run CCleaner
Once the main window of the program is displayed, to try to optimize Windows 10 going to free up space on the computer you just have to select the elements you want to remove from the computer using the options in the left sidebar (by default they are already selected all the main options on which the software will act) and then press the Start cleaning button .
To act on the system registry and deal with any problems related to it, press on the Register tab and then click on Find problems first and then on Repair selected .
Remove the preinstalled programs
Another excellent solution to try to optimize Windows 10 consists in going to remove all the various and any programs pre-installed on the computer by the manufacturer and which therefore could house on your trusted multimedia station from the moment of purchase of the same. Specifically, I refer to trial versions of antivirus, multimedia programs, additional toolbar for the browser and other programs essentially of dubious utility.
To remove all these programs, I suggest you use Should I Remove It? . If you have never heard of it, know that it is a free application that analyzes all the programs installed on the computer and signals to the user which ones can and must be removed because they are useless or even considered dangerous. To download Should I Remove It? on your PC, click here in order to connect immediately to the program’s website and then press first on the Download button (Free!) and then on Download “Should I Remove It?” .
Download is complete open, double clicking on it, the file you just downloaded and in the window that opens click first on Yes and then on Next . Then accept the conditions of use of the program by putting the check mark next to the item I Accept the terms in the License Agreement and click first on Next three consecutive times, then on Install and then Finish to complete the installation process and to start Should I Remove It ?.
In the window that at this point will open on the desktop, find the programs that have the Removal bar with the highest percentage, i.e. the most useless and / or dangerous ones, and search for information on them by clicking on the What is it button ? .
Once this is done, the Should I Remove It website will open with a description of the selected software and the reasons why it should be removed. Then click on the Uninstall button to start the uninstallation procedure.
Turn off visual effects and animations
Another excellent solution that could allow you to optimize Windows 10 is to disable the visual effects and animations of the operating system, that is, all that series of “accessory” elements that make the user experience more pleasing to the eye. ‘OS but that in some cases slow down, and not a little, the use of Windows.
To disable the visual effects and animations on Windows 10, access File Explorer by pressing the icon depicting a yellow folder attached to the taskbar then click with the right mouse button on the This PC icon located in the left sidebar and select the Properties item from the menu that is shown to you.
In the window that opens, click on the item Advanced system settings in the left sidebar, went to the Advanced tab and then click on the Settings … button relating to the Performance section .
Now put the check mark next to the item Adjust in order to get the best performance and click first Apply and then OK to disable all the visual effects of Windows 10. If you do not prefer the old gray style of Windows windows, you can leave the check next to the item Use visual styles for windows and buttons .
Disable unnecessary software on startup
Another excellent system to optimize Windows 10 that can be particularly useful if you are experiencing excessive slowness in using the computer is to disable unnecessary software that starts automatically when the system starts (and then remains constantly running).
To cope with this, and significantly improve the performance of your system, therefore carefully analyze the list of all the programs set to start automatically on the computer and deactivate those that you do not consider strictly necessary (i.e. those that you must not keep constantly running or otherwise you don’t need them as soon as you turn on your PC).
To do this, right click on the taskbar and select the Task Manager item from the menu that appears. In the window that opens, select the Startup tab , click on the names of the programs that you no longer want to start automatically when Windows 10 starts and press the Disable button located at the bottom right.
In principle, I suggest you leave only the system processes ( Microsoft Windows operating system and the like), the computer security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) and the programs that you are sure you want to start every time you log in to Windows. If you have doubts about the identity of a process, try searching for it on Google .
Defragment the hard drive
Another good way to try and optimize Windows 10 is to defragment your hard drive . If I am not aware of it, defragmentation represents a fundamental routine operation to maintain the shape of a PC. Defragmenting the contents of a hard disk allows you to “gather” and reorder the information that Windows saves in a fragmented way in parts of the disk distant from each other. In this way, the times with which the system can recall files and programs are speeded up.
To try to optimize Windows 10 through defragmentation, you can use the utility available “standard” on the operating system: Defragment and optimize the drive .
To do this, type defragment in the search field located on the taskbar, click on the first result that is shown to you and wait for the utility window to be visible on the screen.
In the window displayed on the desktop you will find a list of the hard disks present in the PC with two buttons at the bottom of the latter: Analyze , which allows you to analyze the status of the disk, and Optimize , which instead launches directly the defragmentation operations, TRIM optimization and consolidating the memory allocation for the selected drive. To defragment your PC manually you must select the unit you want to undergo the optimization procedure (eg C 🙂 and click on the Optimize button .
Eventually you can also change the times in which Windows 10 must perform automatic disk optimization. To do this, click on the Change settings button and, in the window that opens, use the Run drop-down menu according to a schedule to set the defragmentation every week (default setting), every day or every month. Personally I suggest you leave the setting active on the weekly plan, in this way Windows will take care of automatically optimizing the disks based on their type once a week taking advantage of the moments of inactivity of the PC.
Reset your computer
In the unfortunate event that the use of the software that I recommended to you in the previous lines and the implementation of the stratagems indicated had no effect, I invite you not to throw in the towel yet and to try to optimize Windows 10 by reporting the status of the system to factory settings using the appropriate recovery function present in the OS (if you remember correctly, I told you in detail in my tutorial on how to format Windows 10 ).
To try to optimize Windows 10 by going to restore your computer, press on the search field attached to the taskbar and type settings and then press on the first result displayed.
In the new window that will open at this point, click on Update and security , press the Restore item located in the left sidebar and then click on the Start button located in the Reset your PC section .
Then choose the Keep my files option , if you intend to format Windows 10 by removing the apps and settings but continuing to keep your personal files (photos, text documents, etc.), or choose the Remove option everything , if you want to remove anything that is stored on your computer. On some PCs, generally laptops, you can also find the Restore default settings option that allows you to restore the computer to its factory state, i.e. with the same programs, services etc. that you had found on the same at the time of purchase.
At this point, if you have selected the option Keep my files, follow the appropriate wizard visible on the screen by always pressing the Next button and waiting for the formatting of the operating system to be started and completed. In case of second thoughts, press the Cancel button .
If, on the other hand, you have chosen the Remove all option , indicate in the window that you are then shown on the screen if you only want to remove your personal files or if you intend to clean the drive as well. In the first case, press on Remove only my personal files while in the second case click on Remove files and clean the drive .
