How to mix vocals: Did you enjoy recording a song with your PC microphone and now would you like to combine the audio recording you made with a backing track? This is not an audio editing expert operation. Just find the right program to do things simply, like Audacity.

Audacity is a free and open source program available for all major operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X and Linux) that allows you to edit audio files in a very versatile way. It allows you to cut, merge, mix, normalize and apply tons of professional-grade filters to your music files. So I would say don’t waste any more time and see right away how to mix vocals and music from two different audio tracks using it.

If you want to find out how to mix vocals with Audacitythe first step you need to take is to connect to the website of the program and click on the item Download Audacity 2.0.2 to download it to your PC. When the download is complete, double-click on it to open the file you just downloaded (eg. audacity-win-2.0.2.exe) and, in the window that opens, first click on Run and then on Yup, OK and Forward four consecutive times. Continue by clicking on Install, Forward And end and at the end of the installation process Audacity will start automatically.

By default, Audacity does not integrate the plugin needed to export files in MP3 format. To activate this feature, you need to connect to the LAME MP3 add-on website and click on the item Lame_v3.99.3_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe to download it to your PC. When the download is complete, double-click on it to open the file you just downloaded (Lame_v3.99.3_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe) and, in the window that opens, first click on Run and then on Yup, Next three consecutive times, Install And Finish to complete the installation.

For mix vocals with a music track in Audacity, you have to load the two audio files into the program by selecting the item Import> Audio from the menu File. When the operation is complete, you must use the tools made available to you by the software to align the two tracks and mix them as precisely as possible.

First of all, start by listening to the initial status of the two songs played simultaneously by clicking on the button play which is located at the top left. If the vocal track seems a little earlier or later than the musical one, you can perform the alignment of the two files by acting manually or by relying on the automatic filters of Audacity.

If you want to manually postpone or anticipate the vocal track by a few moments, select it time shift tool present in the program toolbar (the ↔ icon) and move the graph with the mouse. If you prefer to use the automatic functions included in the software, go to the menu Tracks> Align Tracks and select one of the available options (eg. Align with cursor, Align all the tracks togetheretc.).

Another good tool for mixing music and vocals with Audacity is the one accessible from the menu Effects> Change Tempo which allows you to change the rhythm of the selected tracks and to set the precise number of bpm of the song.

When you are satisfied with the result, you can merge the music track and the vocal track of your project and save everything in a single file by selecting the voice Export from the menu File. In the window that opens, select the format MP3 as the target format, choose the folder in which to save your song and that’s it.
