Before we get to the heart of this tutorial and explain yourself how to make live Facebook with camera, you may find it helpful to know the equipment needed to connect the camera to your computer and the programs to use to stream.

First, you need to know that if your intention is to broadcast on Facebook by linking one external camera or one DSLR (Digital single-lens reflex) to your computer, you must use a video capture card to transfer the signal from the camera to the computer.

Once you get one of these devices, all you need to do is connect the camera or DSLR camera to the video capture device, via HDMI cable, and then connect the device in question to the computer via USB cable (or, if your device is equipped with USB connector, to insert it directly into the appropriate input of the computer).

If, on the other hand, you have a camera Canon (including mirrorless cameras), you can do without using a video capture device since the famous Japanese company has created a special software called Canon EOS Webcam Utility. The latter allows you to connect the camera to the computer using the supplied USB cable and use it as a webcam using the tethered mode, i.e. the ability to remotely control the camera and take photos which are automatically displayed on the computer.

To download the software in question, connect to Canon official site, select the camera model you are interested in and, in the new open page, click on the buttons Select And Download related to the item EOS Webcam Utility. Once the download is complete, all you have to do is open the ZIP file you just downloaded, double-click on the file EOSWebcamUtilityBeta-[versione].exe, if you have a Windows PC, or on the file OSWebcamUtilityBeta-[versione].pkg if you have a Mac, and follow the instructions shown on the screen to complete the installation.

Next, turn on your Canon camera, select the option Video, connect it to your computer via USB cable And that’s it. By doing so, the camera connected to the computer will be visible among the video sources of the program that you will use to stream live on Facebook.

About the programs needed to make one Facebook live with external camera, you can choose one of the many software that allow you to stream. Among those recommended by Facebook, there are OBS, Wirecast And XSplit. In this guide of mine, I will take OBS as a reference.

How to configure Facebook live with camera

Create direct on Facebook

After connecting the camera you intend to use for the live broadcast to your computer and having downloaded one of the programs I indicated in the previous paragraphs, all you have to do is create the Facebook live stream, retrieve the related streaming key and add it in the settings of the chosen software.

To proceed, connect to Facebook main page and, if you haven’t already, log into your account. Then enter your data in the fields Email or phone And Password and click on the button Log in, to log into Facebook.

Now, if your intention is to create a live stream on your personal profile, click on yours first name visible at the top and, in the new open page, click on the option Live video. If, on the other hand, you want to broadcast live using a Facebook page (of which you are administrator or in which you cover the role of Editor), click on the icon arrow pointing down, select the page of your interest from the menu that opens and click on the item Live visible next to the option Create.

Please note that you can also create a direct on a Facebook group to which you are subscribed. In this case, access the group of your interest, locate the box write something and select the option Live video (in some cases it is first necessary to press on the item Other and then on the option Live video).

Alternatively, you can connect directly to the page Create a live stream of Facebook, click on the button Create a live stream and, through the box Post visible on the left, choose whether to create a live on your profile (Share on your diary), on a Facebook page (Share on a page you manage) or on a group (Share in a group).

Organize direct on Facebook

Regardless of your choice, make sure the option is selected Broadcast live now (top left) and, if you wish, enter the title and description of the live in the fields Live video title And Write something about this live video.

Now, select the tab Stream configuration, tap on the item Use streaming key and, in the box Configure options, put the check mark next to the option Use a permanent streaming key, in order to obtain a reusable key and not have to repeat the connection between Facebook and the program you use for streaming (eg OBS) every time you want to create a new live on the famous social network.

At this point, locate the box Settings and put the check mark next to the options of your interest between End the live video if the streaming broadcast stops, Embed live video (to obtain a code that allows you to insert the live stream on websites outside Facebook), Hide at the end of the live video (to hide the video at the end of the live broadcast) e Allow viewers to rewind (option not available for live video longer than 8 hours).

Once this is done, all you have to do is click on the button Copy related to options Streaming key And Server URL and enter the data in question in the settings of the software you have chosen to use for live streaming on Facebook. If, for example, your choice fell on OBS, start the program in question, click on the button Settings visible in the box Checks and, in the new screen that appears, select the item Direct.

Configure OBS to Live on Facebook

Now, choose the option Facebook Live via the drop-down menu Service, enter the streaming key you copied earlier in the field Direct Code and click on the button OK, to save the changes. By doing so, you have connected OBS to the Facebook live created earlier and are ready to broadcast. To find out more, you can read the guide on how to set up OBS.

Before doing so, however, select the camera you previously connected to your computer by clicking on the button + present in the box Sources of OBS by selecting the option Video capture device and pressing the button OK.

In the new screen that appears, select yours camera via the drop-down menu Device and, if you wish, click on the button Configure video (not available if you are using OBS on Mac) to optimize video quality. Finally, click on the button OK to save changes and add your external camera to OBS video sources.

How to start live Facebook with camera

Start direct on Facebook

As soon as you are ready to start the Facebook live, launch OBS, click on the button Start live visible in the box Checks, and if you also want to record the video and save it on your computer, also press the button Start recording.

At this point, access the Facebook live you created earlier and you should already see the video captured by your camera. To broadcast live on Facebook, all you have to do is click on the button Broadcast live located at the bottom left.

After starting the live, from the section Live Producer of Facebook, you can view any comments posted by your viewers in the left sidebar and by entering it in the field write a comment, you can post a message yourself. Also, by pressing the icon of the pencil visible at the top you can change the title and description of the live broadcast.

Instead, by selecting the tabs Surveys And Requests, you can interact with your viewers by creating polls and questions that will be shown in your live stream, while accessing the section Cutting videos you can “capture” short clips from live.

Create a poll during Facebook live

If, on the other hand, your intention is to switch from one video source to another (e.g. from the video captured by your camera to your computer desktop) or change the shot, you can do it on OBS via the boxes Sources And Scenes (provided you have previously configured them). In that regard, you may find my guide on how OBS works useful.

To end the live broadcast, click on the button End live video, confirm your intention (by pressing the button Finish) and select the option End the live also on OBS. Within moments, the live video recording will be available on your diary, Facebook page or group you broadcast on.
