How to log in Windows 8 administrator

How to log in Windows 8 administrator: Windows 8 , as well as the most recent Windows 10 and the previous Windows 7 and Windows Vista, provides for the use of two types of user accounts: the administrator account, which allows you to act in depth on the system, install new applications and freely change the settings Windows, and the standard one that, on the other hand, allows you to customize only the settings that do not affect security or other users of the PC.

In reality, however, there is also a third type of account: that of super-administrator (called Administrator ) which allows you to act in complete freedom on all Windows settings, bypassing user account control and also having access to areas of the system that they are usually “off limits” for ordinary administrators, so to speak. Taking into account what has just been said, with my tutorial today I would like to explain how to log in administrator on Windows 8 , indicating how to proceed both to take advantage of a normal administrator account and to enable the super administrator account.

But I warn you: this second practice is highly discouraged. In fact, a careless use of the super-administrator account can compromise both the stability and the security of the system, so think carefully before proceeding and – another important thing – after using it, deactivate it immediately, otherwise it may fall into less hands sure of yours, with unspeakable consequences. Then don’t tell me I didn’t warn you!

Preliminary information

Before getting to the heart of the matter, going to explain how to log in administrator on Windows 8 , it seems right to make some clarifications about the possibility in question.

To begin with, as I mentioned at the beginning of the article, a clear distinction must be made between a “classic” administrator account and a super-administrator account .

The administrator account allows you to perform actions that can impact, albeit not indefinitely, on the system and other users, such as installing and removing a program, changing system settings, and so on.

The super administrator account adds to the privileges of the standard administrator the possibility to act in total freedom on the Windows settings, to go beyond the user account control and to have access also to those areas of the system that are usually inaccessible for the others types of accounts. It should be noted, however, that its use precludes the possibility of synchronizing your settings in the cloud and using the apps from the Microsoft Store.

That said, there are various ways to perform operations that require administrator permissions on the computer and to convert a user account into an administrator or super-administrator. In the first case, you need to know the  password  of at least one computer administrator; in the second of having logged into the system with an existing administrator account.

Without the due clarifications above, I would say that you are finally ready to take the action to find out, therefore, what are the steps to be taken to log in as administrator on Windows 8.

To be precise, if you are using a standard type account and would like to understand how to take advantage of the advantages offered by an administrator account , you will find all the explanations you need right below.

Get elevated privileges

The quickest and easiest way to perform operations on Windows 8 as an administrator is to obtain elevated privileges by entering the administrative password . The thing, I anticipate it, does not imply the fact that you have to log in as an administrator, just enter the required access key at the right time and you’re done.

To do this, all you have to do is undertake the operation you intend to perform (e.g. the installation of a program) and, when the acquisition of elevated privileges proves necessary, type in the appropriate box that you see appear on-screen, the password for one of the administrator accounts in use on the computer. Then click on the Yes button and you’re done.

As far as the execution of the programs is concerned, instead, all you need to do is right-click on the icon of the reference software and select, from the menu that opens, the item Run as administrator . When prompted, enter the password of one of the administrator accounts on the PC and you’re done.

Change the account type

Do you want to turn a standard account into an administrator account? You can do this easily, but only as long as you are logged into the system with an account with administrative privileges.

All you have to do is access the Start Screen  by clicking on the Start button (the one with the Windows flag ) that you find in the bottom left part of the taskbar , press the button with the magnifying glass  located at the top right, type the term “PC settings” in the displayed field and click on the relevant result.

In the screen that opens, first select the Account item  located in the left sidebar and then the  Other accounts item , which is always on the left. Click, therefore, on the standard account to be transformed into an administrator and click on the Edit button located under his photo.

In conclusion, set the Administrator item in the Account type drop-down menu , click on the OK button and you’re done.

If you want, you can also get the same result from the Control Panel . To access it, click on the Start button and then on the button with the magnifying glass located at the top right of the Start Screen . Then type “Control Panel” in the search field that appears and select the first relevant result.

In the window that opens, click on the Change account type item  located under the wording User account and Family Safety (if you cannot see these items, select the category view from the menu at the top right), click on the account name to modify and select the Change account type option located in the left sidebar.

Finally, put the check mark next to the Administrator item and save the changes by clicking on the Change account type button , located at the bottom right. Easy, right?

As far as the Administrator account is concerned , there are various ways to enable it on Windows 8. All, as I said at the beginning of the guide, however, require the use of a standard administrator account in order to be put into practice: here is explained everything in detail .

Command prompt

The first and fastest system that I want to invite you to consider to activate the super administrator account in Windows 8 is to take advantage of the Command Prompt .

Then click on the Start button (the one with the Windows flag ) located at the bottom left of the taskbar , click on the button with the magnifying glass located at the top right of the Start Screen , type “Command Prompt” in the search field displayed, right click on the first relevant result and select Run as administrator from the menu that opens.

At this point, click on the Yes button , type the net user administrator / active: yes command  in the Prompt window and press the Enter key on the PC keyboard, in order to activate the account as super administrator.

To check that everything went in the right direction, go back to the Start Screen and click on your name at the top right: the one called Administrator should also have appeared in the list of users . To log in to the latter, select it from the list.

When you are finished using the super administrator account, to deactivate it , open the Command Prompt again with administrator privileges (as I indicated above), type the command net user administrator / active: no  and press the Enter key on the PC keyboard.

If you are not going to immediately disable the Administrator account, I strongly recommend that you set an access password for it . To do this, click on the Start button , on the button with the magnifying glass located at the top right of the Start Screen, type “PC Settings” in the search field displayed and select the first relevant result.

In the new screen that is shown to you, select the Account item located in the left sidebar, then the Access Options  which is always on the left and click on the Add button located under the wording Password . Done!

Security Policy Editor

Another system you have from yours to log in as super administrator on Windows 8 is to take advantage of the Security Policy Editor , the management interface that allows you to define the behavior of the operating system in certain particularly delicate scenarios.

To access it, press the combination of Win + R keys  on your computer keyboard and issue the command secpol.msc in the Run window , which in the meantime should have opened on the desktop. Next, hit the Enter key on the keyboard.

Now that you see the Security Policy Editor window, expand the Local Policies sections located in the menu on the left and then the Security Options section (always located on the left), then double click on the Account key : Administrator account status , select the Activated value in the new window that is shown to you and click the OK button to confirm the changes. Then restart your PC.

When you no longer need the super administrator account, you can disable its use via the Command Prompt , as seen together in the previous step . Even in this case, if you do not intend to immediately deactivate the Administrator account, I recommend that you set a password to protect its use, always after logging in and always following the instructions on what to do that I have given you in the previous lines.
