In addition, I will take care of giving you directions on how to try to improve your computer’s performance after upgrading from a previous version of Windows.

So what else are you waiting for to get to work? Cut out a few minutes of free time all for yourself, make yourself comfortable and carefully read the instructions that I am going to illustrate to you: I am sure that, after applying them to the letter, you will get a result far beyond your wildest expectations. Seeing is believing!

Lighten up Windows 10 after buying a new computer

Did you buy a new computer and, after turning it on, did you realize that the responsiveness of Windows 10 is not what you were hoping for? You can try to improve the situation by deleting unnecessary programs, deactivating the automatic start of non-fundamental ones and removing all traces of spyware or other advertising software that may have been pre-installed by the manufacturer. Below you will find everything explained in detail.

Remove unnecessary software

The first aspect I want to consider concerns that of dubious utility programs installed “factory” on the computer, such as trial versions of antivirus or office suite, toolbar for the browser, games or other software that you could hardly find useful: such programs generally do nothing but unnecessarily absorb system resources, giving the feeling that the computer is particularly slow.

To get rid of it,  right-click on the  Windows 10 Start button  (the flag icon in the lower left corner of the screen), click on the  App and functionality item located in the contextual menu proposed and scroll slightly down the window that goes to open, to access the complete list of programs installed on the system.

At this point, identify the software you deem useless one at a time, click on each of them, press the Uninstall button  and follow the instructions on the screen to delete it permanently from the computer, taking care not to delete software that could affect the behavior of other “useful” programs (eg  Microsoft .NET Framework or Apple’s Bonjour service  , if you had installed iTunes).

If you don’t feel ready to act alone, or if you can’t “flush out” all the superfluous software installed on your computer, could you instead rely on the utility  Should I Remove It ? , available for free on the Internet: this analyzes all the programs on the PC, and then signals to the user those which could (or should) be removed because they are useless and / or dangerous.

To download Should I remove it ?, connected to the program ‘s download page , press the Download button  (Free!)  And then on the Download item  “Should I remove it?” : completed this operation, double click on the file you just downloaded, press the Yes  and  Next buttons  , affix the check mark next to the item  I Accept the terms in the License Agreement , click three more times on the Next button  and finalize the software installation process by pressing the Install and  Finish buttons  .

If everything went in the right direction, the software should now start automatically: therefore, it identifies the programs that have the Removal bar  with the highest percentage (i.e. the most useless and dangerous ones) and, to understand what it is treats, presses the button  What is it? .

In doing so, the Should I Remove It website will open, which will show you a brief description of the program and any reason why it should not be present on your computer. To uninstall it, simply go back to the Should I Remove It main screen? and press the Uninstall button  corresponding to the software you intend to get rid of.

Disable programs at startup

Another great way to try to lighten Windows 10 is to disable automatic startup of programs not critical to the operating system when the computer is turned on. In this way, Windows should be more responsive to power on, avoiding unnecessary waiting caused by software that could even remain unused.

To proceed, press the key combination  Ctrl + Shift + Esc  to start the Windows Task Manager panel  , that is the part of the operating system through which you can manage running processes; you can achieve the same result by  right-clicking on an empty spot on the Windows taskbar (the one located on the bottom edge of the screen) and selecting the Task Manager item  from the menu that opens.

Once the manager is started, click on the More details button  , go to the Startup tab  and disable the programs (or processes) that you do not want to start automatically with Windows, by  right-clicking on each of them and selecting the Disable item  from the proposed contextual menu. Be careful not to disable basic programs like antivirus (eg  Windows Defender ) or the main components of the operating system.

Install a good antivirus

Another excellent method to try to make Windows 10 more light and snappy is to install an efficient antivirus but, at the same time, equipped with a light interface and a scanning system that do not significantly impact the resources of system.

So, after uninstalling any antivirus (test or not) already present, turn to the antivirus included “standard” in Windows 10, Windows Defender , which in addition to being “light” is also very effective, according to the latest comparative tests.

If Windows, Defender does not satisfy you, I recommend you rely on a free solution such as  Bitdefender Free . If you have never heard of it, Bitdefender Free is an antivirus capable of protecting not only the files on the disk, but also detecting the definitions of seemingly unknown viruses in real time, analyzing suspicious behavior and protecting Web browsing activities all with a light system that “disturbs” the user only when it is actually needed.

To use it, connected to the Internet page of the antivirus, click on the button  Download it for free to immediately start the download of the installation program and, completed this operation, launch the latter and wait a few minutes for the necessary files for the setup to be automatically retrieved from the Internet .

At this point, accept the license to use the software by inserting a tick in the appropriate box, press the Install button  and wait for the antivirus to perform an initial scan of the files on the computer: once completed, the installation is automatically completed and the antivirus immediately activated.

I took care to offer Bitdefender because, in my opinion, it is an excellent compromise between efficiency and lightness, however there are many security solutions compatible with Windows 10, even free, able to adequately protect the operating system from malware of all kinds: you I talked about it in detail in my guide to the best antivirus for Windows 10 .

Lighten Windows 10 after an update

Have you noticed that your computer ‘s performance has deteriorated after upgrading to Windows 10 and are you worried that you have done something wrong? Don’t worry, the problem could be due to the presence of too many “superfluous” files or to some malware that escaped the antivirus that you previously installed. Below I show you the best methods to try to lighten Windows 10 after performing an update.

Delete unnecessary files

To overcome these problems, I recommend you rely on the CCleaner program  : if you have never heard of it, it is a well-known Windows software (but not only) dedicated to disk cleaning and maintenance of the “delicate” parts of the system operational, such as the registry. For your information, programs of this type are called  janitor .

To download it, connected to its official website , press on and, once the download is complete, start the file you just downloaded and remove the check mark from the boxes located under the heading  Optional , so as to avoid installing programs and additional toolbars. At the next step, select Italian from the drop-down menu for selecting the language, press the Install  button  to start the setup process and finally click on the Run CCleaner button   to immediately launch the program.

Once in the main CCleaner screen, start to free up disk space by selecting the items you want to remove from the computer from the left part of the window (e.g. Internet cache , Cookies , download history , unnecessary files of File Explorer and so on) and finally clicking on the Start cleaning button  . By default, CCleaner already selects the main options to act on.

Afterwards, you can go to clean the registry through the Registry tab  : to start the scan of the same looking for any problems (e.g. program entries no longer present on the computer), click on the Find problems button  . Once the log analysis is complete, press the Repair selected button  to try to bring the situation back to normal.

Repairing the registry is a very delicate operation, as its poor execution can seriously compromise the functioning of the system. In this regard, before proceeding, I strongly recommend that you make a backup of it .

If you wish, after carrying out the basic cleaning, you can take advantage of CCleaner to analyze and correct other aspects of the computer (programs that cannot be uninstalled, problematic plugins of the various browsers, duplicate files and much more): I explained to you in detail l use of these features in my guide on how to download and use CCleaner .

Remove malware and threats

After having carefully cleaned up the operating system following the advice I have given you a little while, do you still find a certain “heaviness”? As an additional measure, you may want to perform further system analysis for security-related problems, which the antivirus cannot detect: for example, you may have contracted seemingly invisible malware that maximizes CPU power, making it appear the computer is an authentic “brick”.

To solve the problem, I suggest you turn to the Malwarebytes software  , available in both free and Premium versions, with prices starting from € 39.99 / year for a single computer. The “free” version of the program includes a 14-day trial period of the Premium features, after which they are “automatically” downgraded to the basic version.

The free version of Malwarebytes allows you to perform a thorough scan of the system looking for viruses, malware and threats of various types (without however coming into conflict with the antivirus already installed in the operating system), but does not offer protection in time real . In other words, “basic” version of Malwarebytes  cannot replace the antivirus.

Having made this necessary premise, it is time to take action: to download the program, connected to its  main web page , click on the Free download  button  and then repeat the operation with the Download Now button  to automatically start downloading the installation file.

Once this is done, launch the package you just downloaded ( mb3-setup-xx.exe ), click on the Yes button  , choose Italian from the proposed drop-down menu, press the OK button   and then click on the Accept and install button  . Then press the Finish button  to end the process, then click on the Start now button  to start the program.

Personally, I advise you to immediately deactivate the 14-day trial of the Premium version, so that Malwarebytes does not “step on your feet” to the antivirus already present on your computer: to do so, click on the Program Settings section  , then on the Account Details tab  and, finally , on the Disable Premium Trial and  Yes buttons  .

At this point, go back to the Dashboard  section  and press the Scan button  to immediately start a computer analysis, which could take several tens of minutes. Once you get to the results screen, make sure that all the threats detected are marked by a tick and press the Remove button  selected to move the infected files to a protected, isolated and immunized area of the system, called  Quarantine , and then responds affirmatively to the ‘possible request to restart the computer.

To permanently delete all quarantined files and programs, start Malwarebytes, click on the History tab  and press the Delete all and  Yes buttons  .

Reset your PC

How do you say? Have you put the techniques I recommended throughout this guide into practice but have not yet managed to speed up Windows 10 as you would have liked? Do not throw in the towel yet: you can try to further improve the situation by returning the operating system to the default settings, using the appropriate recovery options present in it.

To proceed, open the Start menu  and press the ⚙  button  in its left side section, click on the Update and security  icon  and, having reached the next screen, go to the Restore  section  by clicking on the option of the same name located in the left bar.

At this point, click on the Start  button  and specify the reset mode most congenial to you: you can choose to delete only the apps and settings while keeping your personal files intact (option  Keep my files ) or to delete all data (option  Remove all ). On some notebooks, you may find a third option related to resetting the computer to the  default settings , which allows you to restore the entire PC to the factory state , i.e. in the state it was the first time you turned it on (thus resetting the partitions of the disk, pre-installed programs and drivers, etc.).

Once you have chosen the most suitable option for you, follow the instructions on the screen and wait for the procedure to be started and completed: depending on the operations to be carried out, it may take several minutes, during which the computer will be restarted several times.

In case of doubts about the procedure just explained, I suggest you carefully read my tutorial on how to restore Windows 10 , in which I took care to illustrate in detail all the steps to be taken to complete the operating system reset procedure.
