How to import NK2 files into Outlook: Every time we compose a new email in Outlook and type a letter in the recipient field, suggestions appear that help us remember, and therefore select, the addresses of the people we want to reach. These suggestions are automatically generated by the application and are collected in a single file, in NK2 format, which can be easily transferred from one PC to another or from one Outlook installation to another.
To transfer the NK2 file from one PC to another or from one Outlook installation to another, just copy it to the “right” folder and start Outlook by giving a command that forces the program to “read” the file. But be careful, you have to follow a slightly different procedure depending on the version of Office installed on your PC. Starting from Office 2010, in fact, the NK2 file has been replaced by another file (Stream_Autocomplete_0_[xx].dat) which is located in a different folder and requires a few different steps to integrate with NK2 files from previous versions of Office.
If you want to know more and, above all, you want to find out how to import NK2 files into outlook, read on: find all the information you need right below. We will first see how to find the NK2 file to be transferred to the new PC (or in the new Outlook installation) and then how to import it into all the most popular versions of Microsoft Office. I assure you it is not difficult.
How to find Outlook NK2 file
The Outlook NK2 file is located in the folder C: Users yourname AppData Roaming Microsoft Outlook (where instead of “yourname” there is the username you use in Windows). Import NK2 files into Outlook 2010 (and later)
As mentioned in the opening of the post, the most recent versions of Outlook, from 2010 onwards, no longer use the NK2 file to save the information related to the autocomplete: they use another file, called Stream_Autocomplete_0_[xx].dat located in the folder C: Users yourname AppData Local Microsoft Outlook RoamCache Of computer. Despite this, it is possible to import NK2 files from older versions of Outlook by placing them in the “right” folder and starting the program using a special command to be given in the “Run …” panel.
The procedure to follow is very simple, but before taking action you need to verify that the NK2 file has the same name as your profile in Outlook (which by default should be just “Outlook”). To do this, open the Control panel classic by searching for “control panel” in the Start menu and click on the icon User account.
Then go up Emailpresses the button Show profiles found in the window that opens and check your Outlook profile name. If the profile name is different from “Outlook”, rename the NK2 file accordingly (if, for example, your profile is called “User”, you must rename the file to “User.NK2”).
Now you can take action! Then take the Outlook NK2 file you want to import to your PC and copy it to the folder C: Users yourname AppData Roaming Microsoft Outlook. If you want to quickly reach this folder, open the panel “Run …” and give the command % appdata% Microsoft Outlook .
At this point, call up the panel again “Run …” pressing the combination Win + R on your PC keyboard, paste the command into it outlook.exe / importnk2 and come on Enter. If everything goes well, Outlook will start and automatically import the auto-complete suggestions from the NK2 file (adding them to those already in the application).
If before import NK2 files into Outlook you want to delete the suggestions for auto-complete already present in the application, start the latter and press the button File which is located at the top left. Then go up Optionsselect the item Mail from the left sidebar (in the window that opens) and click on the button Empty Auto-Complete List.
If you failed to Import an NK2 file into Outlook following the directions I just gave you, try using NK2Edit. This is a free application (made by third parties, not Microsoft) that allows you to read the contents of NK2 and DAT files with Outlook autocomplete suggestions and convert them between them. Using it, you can convert your NK2 file to an Outlook 2010 (or later) DAT file and replace it with the DAT file currently in your copy of Outlook.
To download NK2Edit on your PC, connect to the official website of the program and click on the item Download NK2Edit in a zip File found at the bottom of the page. Then open the zip package that contains the software and extract the contents to a folder of your choice. The program, being portable, does not require installation procedures to be used.
At this point, go to the folder C: Users yourname AppData Local Microsoft Outlook RoamCache of your PC and create a backup copy of the file Stream_Autocomplete_0_[xx].dat. That way, in the unfortunate event something goes wrong, you can restore the file with Outlook autocomplete suggestions.
Now you can take action! So make sure that Outlook is not running (otherwise close it), start it NK2Edit by double clicking on its executable and selecting the item Open from the menu File (top left) to select the NK2 file you want to import into Outlook.
Next, go to the menu File> Save asselect the item Outlook 2010 AutoComplete .dat file (Stream_Autocomplete * .dat) from the drop-down menu Save as and save the file in the folder C: Users yourname AppData Local Microsoft Outlook RoamCache overwriting the file Stream_Autocomplete_0_[xx].dat currently present in the folder.
When the operation is complete, start Outlook and you should find all the suggestions for automatic completion present in the NK2 file within the program. Old suggestions in Outlook will be deleted.
Import NK2 files into Outlook 2007 (and earlier)
If you are using a version of Office equal to or prior to 2007, to import an NK2 file into Outlook, all you have to do is copy it to the folder C: Users yourname AppData Roaming Microsoft Outlook agreeing to overwrite the NK2 file currently present in the same path. This must be done while Outlook is not running, so if the program is running, close it.
The procedure to follow is almost the same if you want to copy a file Stream_Autocomplete_0_[xx].dat Outlook 2010-2016 from one PC to another or from one Office installation to another. All you have to do is copy the file to the folder C: Users yourname AppData Local Microsoft Outlook RoamCache overwriting the one already in the folder, then renaming it the same way.
