The problem, however, is that you cannot hear the audio coming from your microphone in the speakers of the PC.

Does this show that the microphone is broken? No, absolutely. It only shows that you have Windows or macOS configured so that you do not hear the sound of the microphone in the speakers and that, obviously, you do not know yet how to hear the microphone in the speakers Of computer. How about learning now how?

I assure you that this is an extremely simple procedure to complete and that, regardless of the version of Windows or macOS you are using, you will be able to do everything in a matter of minutes, indeed, seconds. You just have to carve out some free time, carefully read the instructions I am about to give you and put them into practice. This way you will find out if there is really something wrong with the microphone you use on your PC. I cross my fingers for you!

Hear the microphone in the speakers with Windows

If you agree, I’d say start this tutorial on how to hear the microphone in the speakers from Windows, talking about the various versions of the Microsoft operating system (which involve slightly different steps to achieve the purpose). Find, therefore, the edition of Windows installed on your computer among those listed below and follow my instructions to activate listening to the microphone through the speakers of the PC.

Windows 10

If you have a computer equipped with Windows 10the first step you need to take is to click on the button Start (the flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen) and select thegear icon from the menu that appears, in order to access the menu Settings of the system.

In the window that opens, click on the icon Systemselect the item Audio from the left sidebar and scroll the screen that opens. Then click on the item Device properties found in the section Choose input device and it will open the window to adjust the properties of the microphone currently in use on the PC.

Now, select the tab I listenput the check mark next to the item Listen to the device and presses the button Apply. From now on, you should be able to hear the microphone sound through the computer speakers.

If not, go back to the microphone properties window, select the tab Levels and raise the volume level of the device using the appropriate adjustment bar. If this does not resolve the situation, go back to the menu Settings> System> Sound Windows 10 and verify that in the drop-down menu Choose input device the microphone you are using is actually selected, otherwise you select it.

Now you should finally be able to hear the microphone in the computer speakers. If not, I’m sorry, but the microphone you are using most likely has problems and needs to be replaced. How last chancetry to verify the correct connection of the device to the computer (if it is an external microphone or headphones with microphone) and the correct installation of the relative drivers.

If you don’t know where to find the drivers for your microphone, try searching [modello microfono] driver on Google and download the drivers from the manufacturer’s official website (do not go to external sites or you could risk running into some malware!) or try to follow the instructions in my tutorial on missing driver programs. If you are using wireless headphones with microphone, however, my tutorial on how to connect Bluetooth headphones to your PC may be useful.

Previous versions of Windows

Uses Windows 7? All you have to do is right-click on the icon of thespeaker located in the notification area (next to the Windows clock) and select the item Recording devices from the menu that appears.

In the window that opens, double-click the del icon Microphonego to the card I listenput the check mark next to the item Listen to the device and click first on Apply and then on OK twice in succession to save the settings. If the microphone is plugged into your PC and working correctly, at this point, you should be able to hear what you say from the PC speakers (or headphones, if you connect the headphones to the PC).

If, on the other hand, you still use the now obsolete Windows XP (bad! This is a highly insecure operating system!), you can achieve the same result by double clicking on the speaker icon located in the notification area (next to the Windows clock). In the window that opens, select the item Property from the menu Optionsput the check mark next to the item Volume Mic and click on the button OK to make the microphone sound appear in the list of items whose volume can be adjusted.

At this point, you just have to remove the check mark from the item Disable placed under the heading Volume Mic in the volume control panel, adjust the volume level as you want and you should be able to hear the microphone sound in the PC speakers (or headphones).

In the event that the procedures described above did not allow you to activate listening to the microphone through the PC speakers, go back to the window for managing the recording devicesselect the microphone currently in use on your computer and click the button Default, in order to make it the default. Then double click on its name, select the tab Levels in the window that opens and brings the volume indicator to the right, in order to increase the microphone output volume.

If even these steps have not had the desired effect, try to verify the physical connection microphone to the computer and (if it is an external device) and the correct configuration of the driver. In this regard, you may find my tutorial on missing driver programs useful, in which I have pointed out software and procedures to find the missing drivers on your computer. If, on the other hand, you are using wireless headphones with integrated microphone, my guide on how to connect Bluetooth headphones to your PC may be useful.

Hear the microphone in the speakers with Mac

You have a Mac? In this case, things get slightly more complicated, as macOS does not have a native feature, like that of Windows, that allows you to hear the microphone in the computer speakers. What you have to do, therefore, is to turn to some applications, both by default and produced by third parties, and use the latter to listen to the audio coming from the microphone. Here is explained everything in detail.

QuickTime Player

QuickTime Player

QuickTime Player, the media player included “standard” in all versions of macOS, is capable of creating audio recordings, video recordings and screen recordings. Thanks to its sound recording function, it also allows you to listen to the microphone through the speakers of the Mac.

To use the QuickTime Player audio recording function, start the QuickTime Player via its icon in the Launchpad (in the folder Other) or by looking for it in Spotlight and choose the option New audio recording from the menu Filewhich is located in the upper left.

If necessary, respond OK when the program requests access to the microphone and moves thevolume indicator, which is at the bottom of the QuickTime screen that appears on the screen. At this point, you should already be able to hear the microphone sound through the computer speakers.

If there is excessive noise and / or reverb, go to System Preferences (the gear icon located on the Dock bar), select the icon Soundgo to the tab Entranceclick on the name of the microphone currently in use (eg. internal microphone) and decrease the value of Input volumeusing the appropriate indicator.

Audio Monitor (MTCoreAudio)

MTCoreAudio

If QuickTime Player didn’t satisfy you, you can try the application Audio Monitor included in the package MTCoreAudioa framework that allows you to interact in a very interesting way with the macOS audio libraries and, for example, activate the reproduction of the microphone sound through the computer speakers.

To download the software, which is completely free, go to this web page and click on the link disk image, which is located at the top. Once the download is complete, open the dmg package you got, drag Audio Monitor in the folder Applications macOS and start the program by right clicking on it and selecting the item You open for two consecutive times (this operation, necessary only at the first start, allows you to bypass the macOS restrictions on applications from non-certified developers).

At this point, make sure that in the menu Input of Audio Monitor your microphone is selected (otherwise you select it), check that the bars relative to the output volume (at the bottom of the window) are moved to the right and click on the button Play Through to start hearing the microphone in the Mac speakers.

If there is excessive reverb or other noise, check the sound settings in Preferences system as I explained to you in the QuickTime Player tutorial chapter.

Other possible solutions

How to hear the microphone in the Mac speakers

Although you tried the solutions outlined earlier in this tutorial, were you unable to hear the microphone through the Mac speakers? In this case, I recommend that you go in System Preferencesselect the icon Soundthen the card Entrance and make sure that the microphone you intend to use to hear your voice is actually selected.

Then carefully check the physical connection between the computer and the microphone (if it is an external device) and, if you are using a pair of Bluetooth headphones with built-in microphone, make sure that Bluetooth is active and the device is correctly configured through the latter. : in this regard, you may find it useful to read my tutorials on how to activate Bluetooth on Mac and how to connect Bluetooth headphones to your computer.
