A friend aware of the situation suggested that you try to solve it by going to format Windows 10. However, if you are here at the moment and you are reading this guide, it is clear that although you have taken the suggestion well, you have not yet understood how to proceed. If things are actually this way and if you are therefore interested in finding out what steps you need to take to format Windows 10 I am happy to inform you that you have come to the right place, or better, on the right guide. In fact, in the following lines I will explain everything you need to do to succeed “in the enterprise”.

How do you say? Not being very practical in computer science, do you fear that the operations you will have to carry out are too complicated for you? But no, you don’t have to worry. While apparently it may seem difficult, formatting Windows 10 is actually a fairly simple procedure to perform. All you need is a minimum of attention and patience and some free time available and you’re done, trust me.

So if you are actually interested in finding out what you need to do to be able to format Windows 10, I suggest you get comfortable and dedicate yourself to reading the following lines. I am sure that in the end you will be able to tell you more than satisfied and that you will also be ready to say that in reality it was a real no-brainer. Let it bet?

How to format Windows 10

Depending on what your needs and preferences are, you can choose between two different methods for formatting Windows 10. The first is to use the function Reset your PC which is incorporated in Windows 10 while the second involves the use of the utility Media Creation Tool. In both cases the final result is practically identical.

Before taking action by formatting your PC with Windows 10 installed, I also suggest that you back up the data stored on your computer so that you can always access it anyway. To find out how, let’s look at my guide on how to make backups.

Method 1: Reset your PC

If you want to format Windows 10 using the Reset PC function, the first thing you need to do is to access the section Update and security Windows. To do this, type the term in the search field attached to the taskbar settings, click on the first result attached to the list that is shown to you in the menu Start and then presses on the voice Update and security present in the new window that went to open on the desktop.

Now on the item Restoration located in the sidebar on the left, then click on the button To start you find in the section Reset your PC.

Now choose the option Keep my files, if it is your intention to format Windows 10 by going to remove the apps and settings but continuing to keep your personal files (photos, text documents, etc.), or choose the option Remove everything, if you want to remove anything that is stored on your computer. On some PCs, generally laptops, you can also find the option Restore default settings which allows you to restore your computer to its factory state, i.e. with the same programs, services etc. that you had found on the same at the time of purchase.

At this point, if you have selected the option Keep my files stick to the appropriate wizard visible on the screen by always pressing the button Forward and waiting for the formatting of the operating system to start and complete. In case of second thoughts, press the button Cancel.

If instead you have chosen the option Remove all, indicates in the window that is then shown on the screen if you want to remove only your personal files or if you also want to clean the drive. In the first case, press it up Remove only my personal files while in the second case click Remove the files and clean the drive.

Keep in mind that the first option allows you to format Windows 10 faster but is less secure while the second option may take up to a few hours but will make it extremely difficult for third parties to recover files. In both cases, then stick to the appropriate wizard that is shown on the screen. In case of second thoughts, press the button Cancel.

The computer will then restart and start the initial Windows 10 configuration procedure during which you can adjust various operating system settings. If you prefer to speed everything up, you can click on Use quick settings to use the default settings. Then proceed to associate your Microsoft account with Windows or create a local account to be able to immediately resume using your PC with Windows 10 installed.

Once the procedure for formatting Windows 10 is completed, do not forget to activate your copy of the OS by providing the product key in your possession again. To do this, go to the section Settings operating system, click Activation and then select the option on the right to provide your product key and to activate your copy of Windows 10. When the procedure is completed you will see the item Windows is activated at the field Activation.

Method 2: Media Creation Tool

If for any reason you cannot format Windows 10 as I indicated in the previous lines, you can still do this using the Media Creation Tool. It is a small free program from Microsoft that allows you to download any version of Windows 10, install it on your PC, copy it to a stick or save it as an ISO image. To download the Media Creation Tool, click here in order to connect to the appropriate section of the Microsoft website and press the button Download the tool now.

Once the download procedure is complete, double click on the file obtained, press the button Yes, wait for the Media Creation Tool window to be visible on the screen, click on accept and then choose whether to format Windows 10 by acting on the PC in use or whether to format Windows 10 by acting on another computer going to create a special installation support. In the first case, all the files necessary for the installation of the operating system will be downloaded from the Internet and the procedure for formatting Windows 10 will automatically start. In the second case, you can create a USB stick with the Windows 10 installation files or you can download the ISO image of the operating system to be burned to DVD.

If you intend to format Windows 10 on the computer you are currently using, once the Media Creation Tool window is open, choose to update the PC immediately after which click on the button Forward located at the bottom right, wait for the complete download of all the components necessary for the installation of the operating system and follow the appropriate wizard that is shown on the screen.

Proceed by indicating if you prefer to download the latest updates available for the new operating system before formatting Windows 10 on your computer and then click on accept to accept the conditions of use of the product and indicates whether you want to install the operating system again keeping personal files, apps and settings, whether to do so by keeping only your personal files or if you do not keep anything by performing a “clean” format. So press on Forward and confirm your selection by clicking on Yes.

Wait now for the procedure by which to format Windows 10 is started after which choose the language and keyboard layout and then presses the button Install. Then click on Ignore in response to the request to enter the product key (you will enter it once the procedure for formatting Windows 10 has been completed), indicate the edition of Windows 10 to be installed on the PC, accept the conditions of use of the software and choose whether to run an update of the copy of Windows already present on the computer or whether to perform a custom installation.

The computer will be restarted and the initial configuration procedure of Windows 10 will start. Therefore, follow the instructions that I have given you in the previous lines, when I explained how to format Windows 10 using the appropriate features attached to the operating system. The procedure to follow is practically the same.

How to restore Windows 10

If instead it is your intention to format Windows 10 going to act on a different PC from the one currently in use, once the Media Creation Tool window is open select the option to create a Windows 10 installation medium, press the button Forward, choose which version of Windows 10 to download, the OS language and the architecture of the same using the appropriate drop-down menus. Then again on the button again Forward.

Proceed now going to put the check mark next to the option USB flash drive to create a USB flash drive for installing Windows 10 or next to the option ISO file to download an ISO file of the operating system and go ahead to indicate the device or the destination folder of Windows 10 and to start the download after which the Media Creation Tool will automatically copy the operating system files on the stick or in the ISO file you have decided to save on your PC

Note: In case you have chosen to format Windows 10 on another computer via USB stick, the pendrive in question must have a capacity of at least 8 GB. I also suggest you to use an empty key or in any case a pendrive on which files are saved that you have already filed elsewhere since the device will be formatted and following this operation the previously archived content will be unrecoverable. If instead of the USB stick you have chosen to format Windows 10 via ISO file, you can read my guide on how to burn ISO files to find out how to create an operating system installation DVD.

Then eject the Windows 10 key or DVD and connect the support to the computer on which you want to format the operating system, making sure that it is turned off, then turn on the PC by pressing the appropriate button on the case. Doing this should automatically start the procedure by which you can format Windows 10 from USB or DVD.

If the procedure to format Windows 10 from USB or DVD does not start automatically and if the copy of the operating system already installed on the PC starts normally, enter the BIOS and change the boot order by setting it as the first device USB port or DVD holder. If you don’t know how, take a look at my guide on how to enter the BIOS.

Once the operating system installation procedure has started, then follow the instructions that I have already given you in the previous lines when I explained how to format Windows 10 by updating your computer. The steps you need to perform at this point are the same.
