How to download Windows 10: On July 29, 2015, Microsoft officially released Windows 10, an all new version of its historic operating system that marks a clear break with the past. The much-maligned Windows 8 Start Screen leaves room for a new “hybrid” menu that manages to combine in the best way the ease of use of the old “Start” with the flexibility of the live tiles introduced in Windows 8; Internet Explorer retires and is replaced by Edge, a new browser much lighter, flexible and attentive to Web standards, and the news is still many.

Certainly the integration, within the operating system, of Cortana, the virtual assistant of Microsoft home through which you can search for any type of information online, deserves some interest. On the gaming side, however, all the functions related to the Xbox universe are appreciated; functions that allow you to share game sessions in real time with your console or those of friends. But now let’s put aside the preambles and go straight to the point.

How to download Windows 10? How do you install it on your PC? How much? Let’s try to answer all these questions together and get to know this promising new version of the Microsoft operating system more closely. I bet that after trying it you won’t miss Windows 8 or the dear old Windows 7!

Minimum requirements Windows 10

How to download Windows 10

To install Windows 10 you must have a computer with at least 2 GB of RAM, 20 GB of free disk space, a processor of at least 1GHz with support for PAE, NX and SSE2 and a graphics card with support for Microsoft DirectX 9 and WDDM drivers. The 32-bit version of Windows 10 without Anniversary Update “runs” even on PCs equipped with 1GB of RAM, however, let’s face it, nowadays with such a quantity of memory you can not do almost anything.

As you may have noticed, the minimum requirements are practically identical to those foreseen for Windows 8 and before even for Windows 7, you don’t need a more powerful PC to switch to Windows 10. To verify that all the hardware and software components of your computer are compatible with the new operating system, download theFree Microsoft Assistant which is designed for Windows 8.1 but since the minimum requirements are the same, it also works for Windows 10.

To download the Microsoft Assistant, connected to the Redmond company’s website and click on the button Download free Windows 8.1 Assistant. After that start the executable OSGS14-WindowsUpgradeAssistant-32bitand64bit-ClientSKU-4141411.exe, click on Yup and wait a few moments for the software to do its job.

You will be shown a summary screen with the list of compatible apps and devices with Windows 8/10, the items to be examined (which therefore may have compatibility problems with the new operating system) and the upgrade options available. To view the details click on the item View compatibility details.

For upgrade to Windows 10 keeping data and / or settings you must have a genuine copy of Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1. “Smooth” Windows 7 (without Service Pack 1) and Windows 8 are not supported, as it is not possible to switch to Windows 10 starting from Vista or XP.

If instead you choose to make aclean installationi.e. to format the computer’s hard disk and install Windows 10 from scratch, the version of the operating system previously installed on the computer makes no difference. The important thing is that the PC has the necessary hardware requirements to make the new Windows “run”.

Update to Windows 10 via Windows Update

How to download Windows 10

As reiterated over and over during this tutorial, users of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 can upgrade to Windows 10 for free for a year. This possibility is highlighted by the appearance of an icon in the system notification area: one white flag (the Windows logo) which allows you to reserve your copy of the operating system and install it as soon as it becomes available.

To book your copy of Windows 10 (completely free of charge), click on the flag that appeared next to the system clock, click on the button Book the free update present in the window that opens and type in the email address where you want to receive the confirmation of your booking.

As soon as your copy of Windows 10 is available, you will find it in the updates of Windows Update and you can install it like any other operating system update. More info here.

If you have a genuine copy of Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 and you don’t see the icon appear to reserve your copy of Windows 10, start Windows Update and download all the updates available for your PC. The “magic” one capable of making the flag appear should be the one named KB3035583.

Despite the presence of this update on your computer, do you still not see the flag? Then try to run this repair tool released by Microsoft and restarting the PC. Otherwise try to go to the folder C: Windows System32 GWX and manually start the executable GWXUX.exe (the launcher to start the reservation of Windows 10 which is installed on the PC by the update KB3035583) as administrator. If you don’t know how to do it, right click on its icon and select the item Run as administrator from the menu that appears.

If even these “emergency” solutions do not work, make sure you have a genuine system, that you have performed all the updates available for your PC (even the “recommended” ones, by enabling the appropriate option in Windows Update> Change settings) and that your computer meets the hardware requirements necessary to run Windows 10. Therefore contact Microsoft technical support and try to solve the problem with the technicians of the American company.

Note: if you don’t want to update to Windows 10, you can hide the Windows Update notification by following the instructions in my tutorial on how to remove Windows 10 update.

Create a USB stick or a Windows 10 DVD

How to download Windows 10

If you have decided to create a Windows 10 installation media through Media Creation Tool, Presses the button Forward and choose which version of Windows 10 to download. By default, the download of a version of Windows compatible with the operating system currently in use is automatically set (eg Windows 10 64-bit in Italian if the PC in use has 64-bit Windows 7 installed in Italian), but removing the check from the voice Use the recommended options for this PC you can choose any version of the operating system.

Going into more detail, expanding the drop-down menus Tongue, Edition is Architecture you can choose to download Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro 32 and 64 bit (also both architectures simultaneously) in all languages. Versions are also available “N” Windows 10 that differ from the others because they do not include Windows Media Player, personally I would leave them alone.

Once you have made your choice, press it Forward, put the check mark next to the option to create one USB flash drive (i.e. a USB stick) for installing Windows 10 or next to the option to download a ISO file of the operating system and go forward to indicate the Windows 10 device or destination folder and to start the download.

Once the download is complete, the Media Creation Tool program will automatically copy the Windows 10 files to the key indicated by you (which must have a capacity of at least 8GB and will be formatted) or in the ISO file that you have decided to save on your PC. To burn the ISO file on a diskette, use the utility included “standard” in Windows or one of the programs that I recommended in my tutorial on how to burn ISO files.

Install Windows 10 from USB or DVD

When you are done with download Windows 10, you can install the operating system on your PC (or any other compatible computer) by booting from the USB stick or from the Windows 10 DVD and following the wizard that is proposed to you. The first step you need to take is to choose the language in which to use the operating system and the keyboard layout, after which you have to press the buttons Forward is Install and you must enter the product key of your copy of Windows 10.

Caution: if you have decided to make a free update from Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 do not follow this procedure or your product key will not be recognized. If, on the other hand, you have already taken advantage of the offer for the free upgrade to Windows 10 and now you want to perform a clean installation of the operating system, read on and go ahead safely: the product key of your Windows 7 / 8.1 has already been associated with a copy of Windows 10 and therefore will be recognized without problems.

After entering the product key (which you can momentarily jump to by clicking on the button Ignore), you must select the edition of Windows 10 to be installed on the PC (Home or Pro), you must accept the conditions of use of the software and finally you have to choose whether to run a updating of the copy of Windows already present on the computer or whether to make acustom installation (therefore having the possibility to format the disk, use secondary partitions and so on). More info about it are available in my tutorial on how to install windows 10.

After the first phase of the setup, the computer will restart and the initial configuration procedure of Windows 10 will start, during which you can adjust various settings of the operating system and you can log in with your Microsoft account (this is not necessary if you have performed a upgrade from Windows 7 / 8.1 keeping the settings).

Mission accomplished! Now you have a PC with Windows 10 ready to be used for work, leisure and online communication. I’m sure it won’t make you regret the good old Windows 7 or the highly criticized Windows 8.x.
