That said, there is nothing left for me to do but wish you good reading and good luck!

How to download MIUI: standard procedure

Without a shadow of a doubt, the simplest and safest method to download the MIUI operating system on your device involves the use of type updates OTA (or over-the-air), i.e. the official firmware versions released by Xiaomi itself for the supported devices, to be installed directly on the target device via the Internet.

The procedures to follow are somewhat similar for all versions, so you want to know how to download MIUI 12 or another version, earlier or later, of the operating system, you should have no difficulty in following my directions.

First, if you have any doubts about the support status of the smartphone in your possession and you do not know if it is still part of those officially updated by Xiaomi, you can go to the official website of the manufacturer or search on Google phrases like support status [modello xiaomi].

In any case, to be able to download the latest version of MIUI in an official way, do this: first, touch the symbol ofgear resident on the Home screen or in the app drawer of the device to be updated, so as to open the settings operating system.

Then, tap on the item System info and press the button indicating the MIUI version currently in use (in some cases, the wording “Update” may be visible). Now, wait for the system to check the actual availability of updates and, if there are any, tap the button Download updates, to download them into memory.

Once the download is complete, you will have the possibility to install the update immediately, by tapping the button Restart now, or postpone it for night installation, by touching the wording Update tonight.

If needed, you can also customize the settings for downloading automatic updates: go to the menu again Settings> System info> MIUI version, tap the button (⋮) at the top right and tap the item Update settings from the menu that appears.

Now, use the switches present to choose whether download automatically updates when connected to a Wi-Fi network, download automatically as well using mobile data and if install automatically updates available at night, unless otherwise stated.

In fact, there would also be an entry dedicated to the receiving updates in advance which, in theory, should enable the device to download the official MIUI beta packages: the activation or not of the aforementioned item, at the moment, does not seem to have any concrete effect (and in any case it would be potentially unstable software, therefore not recommended).

MIUI: download the latest package

How to download MIUI: standard procedure

If the installation of the latest update was not successful, you can take advantage of the integrated update manager on your Xiaomi device at any time to download and install the latest official version of the operating system in a single tap.

Doing so is really simple: go to the menu Settings> System Info on the phone, tap the button indicating the MIUI version you are using, press the button (⋮) visible at the top and tap on the option Download the latest package, located in the menu that appears.

Following this operation, the download of the file containing the most recent MIUI edition dedicated to the device in question will be immediately started; you can check the progress using the progress bar present at the bottom of the panel dedicated to updates, or the notification message visible in the dedicated area.

At the end of the procedure, you can choose whether to install the update or schedule it for overnight installation, by pressing on the items that appear on the screen.

How to download MIUI: alternative procedure

How to download MIUI: alternative procedure

In addition to the official procedure provided by Xiaomi, there is also one alternative procedure, officially supported by MIUI, which allows you to force the installation of a specific version of the operating system: the Chinese manufacturer, in fact, in some cases provides the .zip packages of the MIUI operating system for testing purposes.

Generally, these are ROMs in state beta, which can be installed with a low risk margin on Xiaomi devices destined for the Chinese market, but not the global one: in the latter case, in fact, you must be a member of Mi Pilot, the official group of beta testers of Xiaomi.

Furthermore, there are other peculiarities of the MIUI packages released for testing purposes: firstly, the operating system only supports languages Chinese And English, since most of the time it is not meant for the global market; secondly, by company policy, Xiaomi applies a system anti-rollback on numerous devices sold outside of China, which makes it impossible to return to a stable and pre-beta version of MIUI.

For these reasons, if you do not have a Xiaomi smartphone intended for the Chinese market and / or do not have enough experience with the world of Android modding, you I do not recommend forcing MIUI updates: personally, I will not be held responsible for any damage to the smartphone or the data stored on it, since the risk of error is not negligible. I warned you!

In any case, if you think you are quite knowledgeable on the subject, I recommend that you first make a backup important data in the device memory, which can be restored in case of problems: if you do not know how to proceed, take a look at my dedicated guide to backup Android devices, in which I explained how to do it.

Now, take care of locate and download the MIUI best suited to your device and based on the version of Android you want to reach; in this regard, my advice is to rely exclusively on specialized sites in the sector, such as XDA otherwise you run the risk of downloading potentially malicious / incorrect software and damaging your device.

Once you’ve got the ROM that’s right for you, open the app File Manager of Xiaomi and tap on the symbol of folder, located at the top, to view the internal shared memory. Now, check for the presence of the folder downloaded_rom and, if not, create it: tap the button (⋮) located to the right of the entry Internal shared memory, touches the wording Create a new folder located in the menu that appears and assigns the name to the newly created directory downloaded_rom.

Having done this, again through the File Manager, go to the path where you downloaded the package .zip containing the MIUI (eg. Download), put the check mark next to the first name of that file, tap the button Move which appears below (depicting four crossed arrows) and tap, in sequence, on the items Internal shared memory And downloaded_rom. Finally, tap the button Paste, to move the MIUI file to the appropriate path.

If you prefer, you can also perform the same operation via your computer, using a USB cable together with the Windows File Explorer, or with the application Android File Transfer for macOS: I’ve explained how to do it in my guide on how to connect xiaomi to computer.

How to download MIUI: alternative procedure

After this step too, reach the menu Settings> System Info, tap the button MIUI version and then press 10 consecutive times on the MIUI logo visible in the next panel. Following this operation, you should see, at the bottom of the screen, an overlay message relating to theactivation of additional update features.

That’s it – now, tap the button (⋮) resident at the top right, tap on the wording Choose the upgrade package resident in the menu that appears, tap the folder downloaded_rom and select the .ZIP file related to MIUI you obtained earlier.

Finally, confirmation willingness to proceed, wait for the installation of the file to be completed and, when prompted, press the button restart your device and… cross your fingers: if everything went well, on the next reboot (which could be a bit longer than usual), you should be able to use the new version of MIUI you downloaded.

Another way to obtain a similar result is tounlock the bootloader of the phone and installing an alternative MIUI version using a custom recovery, that is an operating system external to Android designed to perform delicate operations on the device, including the replacement of ROMs.

This approach, however, has even greater disadvantages than the one seen previously: it imposes the complete cancellation of the data present in the memory, it can take quite a long time (to get the bootloader unlock code from Xiaomi, it could take up to 30 days / 720 hours), voids the warranty of the device and exposes it to concrete risks of definitive rupture, as a very small error in any of the steps is enough to reduce the smartphone to a mere “ornament”.

If you feel ready to proceed (even in this case I do not take responsibility for it, mind you!), I refer you to reading my tutorial on how to change the operating system on android, in which I gave you an example of the steps to put into practice.
