It’s always the same story every time: you don’t have time to log into Facebook and your chatty friend immediately contacts you, writing to you in the chat on the social network. You would be happy to talk to him, were it not that he often looks for you in times when you are busy and when you don’t have time to dedicate to him. For this reason you are trying to figure out how to disable Facebook chat , so as not to be disturbed.

If things are indeed the way I have described them and if you find yourself in these situations or in a similar one, you will be happy to know that there is the possibility of deactivating the social network chat: it is a very simple operation to make; it only takes a few steps. Over the next few chapters I will therefore explain how to do it via the app for Android and iOS smartphones / tablets but also how to proceed from a computer, via a web browser, by connecting to the official Facebook site and using the apps for Windows 10 Facebook and Facebook Messenger.

How do you say? Now that you’ve learned what the topics I’m going to cover in this tutorial are, are you eager to get started? Well, I can imagine it! Okay: take a few minutes of free time, sit nice and comfortable in front of the computer and also pick up the device you intend to use to carry out the operation in question. I wish you a good reading and a good “job”.

Disable Facebook chat from Android

To deactivate the Facebook chat from Android it is necessary to act through the Facebook Messenger application previously installed on the device in use. To do this, start it by pressing its icon on the home screen or in the drawer, that is the section in which there are all installed apps (the icon of this app is the symbol of a comic light blue with a central white lightning) .

Once the application has been started, you can proceed by deactivating the activity status , that is the function that indicates to your Facebook friends, in the Activates screen of Facebook Messenger , when you are online on the social network. By deactivating this option, however, you will not even be able to see when your friends are active on Facebook.

To succeed in this intent, presses on your profile picture that you find in the upper right corner and, in the screen displayed, called Me , tap on the word Activity status . Then move the lever from ON to OFF , corresponding to the item Show when you are active . To confirm the operation, press the Deactivate item in the next displayed menu.

As you can now see, by going to the Active section in the Facebook Messenger app you will no longer be able to know the list of people and contacts online. You can still restore your activity status directly from the Active screen ; to do this, just press the Activate item .

Disable Facebook chat from iPhone / iPad

If you want to deactivate the Facebook chat because you intend to browse the social networks undisturbed, know that this is possible and that you can do this directly from your iPhone or iPad, through the use of the Facebook Messenger application .

To do this, take your iPhone or iPad in your hand and, first of all, press the Facebook Messenger app icon that you find on the home screen (it is the blue icon with the symbol of a cartoon and a lightning bolt at its interior); once started, click on your profile icon at the top left, so you can see the section called Me .

Then tap on the Activity status item and move the lever from ON to OFF , to disable the Show when you are active option . to confirm the operation, press the Deactivate button . Before confirming the operation, remember that by deactivating the activity status , you will not even be able to see when your friends and contacts are online or when they have been recently.

In any case, having done this you will have temporarily deactivated the Facebook chat, resulting always offline for all your contacts. If you change your mind, go to the Active section that you can see located on the Facebook Messenger home screen . In this section click on the item Activate in order to be online again and thus also see the active people on Facebook.

Disable Facebook chat from computer

As for the possibility of deactivating the Facebook chat from a computer , the first solution I want to talk to you about is the one relating to deactivating the activity status through the use of an option on Facebook, explaining how to carry out the procedure first. in question through the official website of the social network, but also how to do it through the apps for Windows 10 Facebook and Facebook Messenger .

Browser Web

To carry out the deactivation procedure of the Facebook chat through its official website , connect to the social network through the use of a browser for Internet browsing (such as Google Chrome) and log in with your access credentials .

Once this is done you should see a side section on the right side of the screen showing the list of all active contacts. In this sidebar there is the symbol of a gear : click on it and, in the drop-down menu displayed, click on the wording Deactivate the state of activity .

Before confirming the operation, by pressing OK , choose if you want to deactivate the activity status for all contacts , if you want to deactivate it for all contacts except some or if you want to deactivate it only for some contacts .

Then select one of the listed items and, in case you want to deactivate the activity status only for some contacts or for all contacts except some, indicate in the text field that you see on the screen the name of the person to be included in the blacklist or whitelist , then confirm the operation by pressing OK .

If, at a later time, you change your mind and want to go back online on Facebook, you can activate the social network chat by pressing the word Turn on active status that you see in the chat sidebar.

Furthermore, another option available to you regarding the deactivation of Facebook chat concerns the possibility of deactivating calls and video calls as well. To do this, click again on the symbol of a gear that you see in the right sidebar of the Facebook chat, press on the item Disable calls / video calls , choose how long to keep them disabled, by pressing on one of the items that are shown to you.

Alternatively, put a check mark on the words Until I reactivate them and then confirm the operation by pressing the Deactivate button . You can reactivate them later by clicking on the gear icon again and pressing the word Activate calls / video calls .

If you use Facebook Messenger directly from its official website to communicate with friends on Facebook , perhaps because you do not want to be distracted by the social network’s Newsfeed, you will be pleased to know that you can also perform the deactivation procedure in that case.

Then connect to Facebook Messenger via the website www.messenger.com and log in with your Facebook account data, in order to view the list of all active conversations within the social network on the screen.

Now, in the main screen displayed, press on the gear symbol you see in the upper left corner and then in the context menu, click on the Settings item . At the next menu displayed, move the lever from ON to OFF , corresponding to the word Show when you are active .

However, keep in mind that by deactivating the activity status you will not even be shown that of others and your activity status or the status that indicates your recent activity will still be displayed, unless it has been previously deactivated, with the procedure indicated in the chapters dedicated to Android and iOS , also from all devices where you use Messenger or Facebook.

If you want to reactivate the activity status , go back to this Settings screen and move the lever to ON, corresponding to the word Show when you are active . By activating this option again, your name will appear in the Active Contacts section which is accessible by pressing on the gear symbol at the top left and then clicking on the word Active Contacts .

Facebook app for Windows 10

To disable the Facebook chat from your computer, you can also act through the use of the Facebook and Facebook Messenger applications for Windows 10. In the following lines, I’ll explain how to act in both cases.

If you want to use the Facebook application for Windows 10 and you have previously downloaded it from the Microsoft Store, start it by pressing the Start button that you find next to its tab in the Windows 10 virtual store or click on its icon, once identified thanks to the Cortana’s search bar.

Once started, log in with your credentials, in order to use the application. Once this is done on the main screen you will see a sidebar with the list of contacts. Then press on the symbol of a gear that you see on the screen and in the context menu, click on the item Disable chat , in order to disable it.

Through the Facebook application for Windows 10 you cannot chat with the users of the social network as this is only possible with the Web version of the social network or using the Facebook Messenger application for Windows 10. I therefore recommend that you download the latter, if you want to carry out a further procedure that allows you to deactivate the Facebook chat.

Having said that, in the latter case you must first start the application in question downloaded from the Microsoft Store (just press on Start in correspondence with the card of the same or click on its icon, the symbol of a cartoon with a lightning bolt, once located via Cortana’s search bar).

When the application is started, log in with your Facebook account credentials in order to see the Home section and the one called People on the screen . The latter shows the list of your contacts and indicates the active people on Facebook (they are those who have a green dot icon next to their name).

That said, if you want to disable Facebook chat, so as to be offline, press the icon with the symbol of a gear called Settings that you can see in the bottom bar of the Facebook Messenger app.

In the next screen displayed click on the word Availability and then move the lever from ON to OFF in correspondence with the item Availability . Before confirming the operation, by pressing the Deactivate button , I remind you that by deactivating this option your friends will not be able to see when you are online on Facebook but that you will not be able to know it either.

At any time you can retrace your steps and reactivate the Facebook chat by going to the Availability section , following the instructions above and moving the Availability lever from OFF to ON .

Turn off chat notifications

As an alternative to deactivating the Facebook chat, through the procedures indicated in the previous chapters, in order not to be disturbed by the messages received in the social network chat, you can deactivate notifications for the latter.

In the following lines I’ll explain how to do it through the Messenger app for Android and iOS and also how to act from a computer, through the Facebook chat app for Windows 10.

Android/iOS

To disable Facebook chat notifications on Android and iOS, through the Messenger application you have to start the latter, and then press on your profile picture that you find in the top right corner on Android and in the top corner left on iOS.

In the context menu displayed on both devices, press now on Notifications and Sounds / Notifications , respectively on Android and iOS. Now, to completely disable notifications, on Android move the lever to OFF , corresponding to the Yes item , while on iOS activate the Do not disturb lever .

At this point, on both operating systems, you will be prompted until when to turn off notifications for the Facebook chat. Then choose one of the items that are proposed to you, for example for 15 minutes and, moreover, using an Android smartphone or tablet, confirm the operation by pressing the OK item .

App Messenger per Windows 10

If you use Facebook from a computer, refer to the following procedures which allow you to disable the notifications for the Messenger chat via the app for Windows 10, as this possibility is not available via the official website of the messaging service.

Once you have connected to the platform and logged in with your credentials, click on the button with the gear symbol located in the lower right corner and press the Notifications item in the displayed menu, then move to ON the lever next to the item Do not disturb , to deactivate notifications, choosing the period of time until you keep them deactivated, for example for 15 minutes .

Block messages from a user

As an alternative to deactivation, you can block messages for a Facebook user; it is a native feature of the platform which differs from the deactivation of the chat for a single user previously mentioned . The latter, in fact, can be activated and deactivated at will from a computer, but also from a smartphone and tablet, completely prevents the blocked person from making contact via private messages.

In the following lines I will illustrate it to you, explaining how to do the operation from Android and iOS, through the Messenger app and how to proceed in the case of using Messenger from the official website.

Android/iOS

To make sure that a specific Facebook user does not contact you via chat, using the Messenger application for Android and iOS, locate the name of the person to be blocked in the list of conversations, tap the (i) button on Android or on his name , on iOS and then, for both operating systems, in the contextual menu displayed, press on the item Block .

Subsequently, if you want to make sure that only messages are blocked, press the lever Block messages sent by [person’s name] on Android or on the word Block messages , on iOS, in order to activate this possibility.

Browser Web

If you are using the Messenger chat from its official website, locate the name of the user to be blocked, press on the symbol of a gear corresponding to his name displayed in the chat and in the context menu, click on the word Block messages to twice in a row.

The procedure that can be carried out through the Messenger application for Windows 10 is instead identical to that indicated for iOS, so refer to the previous chapter in case you need it.
