How to crop an image with Photoshop: Photoshop it is known to most for its advanced functions and for the works that the masters of photo retouching are able to produce using it, but this does not mean that it can only be used to perform complicated operations. On the contrary. Using a powerful program like Photoshop for basic editing also makes everything easier.
For example, who knows how many times you have needed to crop photos saved on your PC to center the subjects immortalized in them, remove unnecessary elements or cut out the subjects. Well, with Photoshop it’s easier than with any other program. Do not you believe it? Cropping an image with Photoshop from PC
If you want to learn how to crop an image with Photoshop from PC, you must first start the program through its icon on the desktop, in the Windows Start menu or in the MacOS Launchpad and import the photo to be cropped into it, selecting the item You open from the menu File (top left). Then you have to choose how to proceed.
Cut out a photo in Photoshop
At this point, if you want to cut a photo to remove some unnecessary parts from it, you have to select it cutter tool from the toolbar, on the left side of the screen, and select the part of the image to crop (ie to keep).
To do this, you need to create a square or rectangular selection on the photo by holding down the left mouse button and “drawing” the selection with the cursor.
Now, you need to refine your selection using the mouse. you can enlarge or reduce the selection by clicking on its corners and holding down the left mouse button, or rotate it moving the mouse pointer out of the selection and holding down the left button.
Once you’ve perfected your selection, you can crop an image with Photoshop removing the rest of the photo by simply clicking on the check mark located at the top left (√) or by double-clicking inside the selection.
If you are satisfied with the result, all you have to do is save your cropped image by selecting the item Save with name from the menu File Photoshop (top left). In the window that opens, type the name you want to assign to the file, select the folder in which to save it and click on the button Save to complete the operation.

Cut out a photo in Photoshop
If you want to cut a photo in Photoshop to cut out a subject and then paste it on a new background, proceed in this other way: after opening the photo with the subject to cut out in Photoshop, activate the mode quick mask by clicking on the circle icon inside the rectangle located at the bottom of the left sidebar.
Once this is done, make sure that in the palette the black as primary color (otherwise select it yourself), turn it on brush tool and use it to “color” the subject to be cut out. The subject will turn red. Try to be as precise as possible in the selection, perhaps changing the size and style of the brush depending on the area of the image to be “colored”.
At the end of the operation, turn off the quick mask by clicking again on the circle icon inside the rectangle located at the bottom of the left sidebar, then choose any selection tool (e.g. the rectangular selection) and invert the selection. If you don’t know how to do it, choose the voice Reverse from the menu Selection which is located at the top.
Now, press the button Refine Edge (located at the top right) and use the adjustment bars that appear on the screen to refine your selection, so that the edges of the subject to be cropped do not appear too soft or include unnecessary areas of image. Once this is done, click on the button OK.
Well: now you just have to copy the subject just selected in the photo, selecting the item Copy from the menu Edit placed at the top, and paste it on a new background.
To do this, open the image to use as background using the menu File> Open Photoshop, select the item Paste from the menu Edit and then move the subject just pasted to the point of the photo that you prefer the most, resizing it if necessary.
If you don’t know how, to move an element in Photoshop just use it Move tool present at the top of the left sidebar (the cross icon), while to resize it just select the items Transform> Scale from the menu Edit (up).
When you are satisfied with the result, save your photomontage by selecting the item Save with name from the menu File Photoshop, always at the top left.

Cropping an image with Photoshop online
Photoshop is available in an online version which, however, is only available to those who have signed up for a Creative Cloud subscription. That is why in this part of the article I decided to tell you about Photopea: it is a free image editor (with optional subscription at $ 9 / month to support its development), made entirely in HTML5 (therefore it does not require external plugins to work), which perfectly follows the Photoshop interface and allows you to perform numerous editing operations, including cropping images.
To use Photopea, connect to the home page of the serviceclick on x located at the top right and activate the use of the Italian language by selecting the item Italian from the menu More> Language located at the top right. Then select the item You open from the menu File and select the photo to crop from your computer. Once this is done, select the tool clipping from the left sidebar and outline the image area to be cropped, using the mouse.
Then click on the symbol √ placed at the top right (or by Enter), to apply the crop, and save the final image on your computer by going to the menu File> Export asby selecting an image format from those available, for example JPG or PNGand pressing the button Save.
If you want to cut out a subject, since there is no Quick Mask tool like in Photoshop, you can use the tool quick selection or the magnetic lasso (both accessible from the left sidebar), outline the edges of the subject with the latter and then refine the selection by clicking on the button Refine edge located at the top left.
For the rest, follow the directions I gave you in previous chapter dedicated to Photoshopthe procedure you need to follow is pretty much the same.
Cropping an image with Photoshop from smartphones and tablets
Do you need to crop a photo “on the fly” and do not currently have a PC at your disposal? No problem. Thanks to the app Photoshop Express from Adobe, you can succeed in your intent even using a smartphone or tablet Android/iOS / iPadOS.
After installing and starting Photoshop Express, click on the button Forward for 10 consecutive times, presses the button Adobe ID and log into your Adobe account or, alternatively, log in with your account Google or with your account Facebook.
Once accessed, press the button OKgrant Photoshop Express the necessary permissions to work and then click onpreview of the photo to be cropped. Then press the button Cut out (the one depicting the two L’s crossedwhich is placed at the bottom), select the aspect ratio of the crop, choosing the one of your interest from the menu at the bottom (ex. Free size, Original, Device, 1: 1etc.).
At this point, perform the actual cropping by moving the box that appeared on the photo and enlarging or shrinking it and, when you are satisfied, press the button Forward (top right) and select the save / share option you prefer.
