How to create icons: You are a great esthete, you love customize your desktop of your computer down to the smallest detail, but now you have reached the limit. You have tried so many different icons that you can no longer find one that suits you. Sorry, but why don’t you create your own instead of looking for “impossible” icons?
No, I’m not kidding. I know that you are not an expert graphic designer and that you have no intention of buying professional software for this kind of thing, but there is a small free program that allows everyone to create icons in an absolutely easy and fast way. Is called IcoFX and now I’ll explain how to make an icon using it. Are you ready?
If you want to find out how to make an iconthe first step you need to take is to connect to the Filehippo website and click on the item Download This Version (located in the right sidebar) to download the 1.6.4 version of IcoFX (the latest free, now paid) on your PC. When the download is complete, double-click on it to open the file you just downloaded (icofxsetup.exe) and, in the window that opens, first click on Run And Yup (to authorize installation on Windows 7 and Vista) and then on Next.
Then accept the conditions of use of the program, putting the check mark next to the item I accept the agreementand click on first Next for four consecutive times and then on Install And Finish to finish the installation process and start IcoFX.
In the window that opens, click on the button Close and you can start make an icon with IcoFX. To create an icon starting completely from scratch (i.e. drawing it as if it were a drawing in Paint), click on the icon of White sheet placed at the top left, put the check mark next to the item 256 × 256 (to make a 256 × 256 pixel icon fully compatible with the latest editions of Windows) and click on the button OK to start designing your icon.
At this point, all you have to do is use the tools and colors in the toolbar located on the right (brush, pencil, geometric shapes, etc.) to draw your icon, if you want to apply special effects to it using the menu Effect and save her. To save your icon in ICO for Windows, click on the floppy disk in the toolbar of IcoFXselect the folder in which to save the file, type the name you want to assign it in the field File name and click on the button Save to complete the operation.
If you want to create an icon starting from an already existing image (perhaps downloaded from the Internet), open IcoFX and select the item Import Image from the menu File to open the JPG, GIF, PNG or BMP image you want to turn into an icon. In the window that opens, set the resolution 256 × 256 as seen before and click on the button OKdecide if and how to cut the image to fit the icon size and click again on OK to complete the import.
At this point, all you have to do is modify the image, if necessary, using the IcoFX tools and save the image as an ICO icon by selecting the item Save As from the menu File. Done! Now you have some very original icons to apply to your desktop!
