How to copy USB stick secretly: A few seconds. At least a few minutes. Yes, the time required to secretly copy the files of the USB sticks connected to it to your PC is very minimal. The operation of this system is very simple: just connect a pendrive with files inside it to your PC to make sure that they are copied locally without anyone noticing anything. Use? Wow, this is not an agent 007 question! You have a USB flash drive with important data. Can’t you take it away with you, but only “see” it in front of its owner? Well, then this makeup fits perfectly.
Yeah but … how to succeed in the business? Lawful question, indeed more: using programs designed just for the purpose in question. These are fairly simple resources to use and configure, available for both Windows and Mac. It only takes a few minutes of free time, a minimum of attention and concentration and you’re done. In short, copying a USB stick secretly is not as complicated as it may seem. If you want to know more, I invite you therefore to continue reading this article of mine all focused on the subject. Together we will see some beautiful ones.
So position yourself comfortably in front of your computer and immediately begin to focus on reading this guide of mine. I am sure that in the end you will be able to say that you are happy and satisfied with what follows. Obviously keep in mind the fact that copying data from a USB stick or any other external medium without having first asked the rightful owner for permission constitutes a serious violation of the privacy of others. So use the information contained in this guide of mine for the sole purpose of testing or in any case ask the owner of the stick first if he is available to consent to the thing or not. Understand?
USB Hidden File Copier (Windows)
The first of the useful resources for the purpose I want to tell you about is USB Hidden File Copier . It is a small free program that works on all Windows operating systems which, once in use, allows you to secretly copy all the files inside the USB sticks or external hard disks that are connected to the computer once in use. . It hasn’t been updated in quite a while, this must be said, but still continues to work very well even on the most recent versions of the Microsoft operating system. Let’s see in detail how to use it.
The first step you need to take is to click here to immediately download the program to your computer. When the download is complete, extract the ZIP file obtained in any position on the PC, right click on the Control Panel application inside it and select, from the contextual menu displayed, the Run as administrator option and then click Yes.
In the window that you will see at this point, click first on Install to install the program, then on OK to confirm the operation and on Browse to select the folder in which to save the files contained on the USB sticks connected to the computer.
Then click the Start button to start the program, OK to confirm everything and close the program window to make USB Hidden Copier work in a hidden way.
At this point, every time you connect USB sticks to your computer, the contents of the latter will be automatically copied to the folder you previously set. You can also start the program “manually” by simultaneously pressing the Alt and C keys on your computer keyboard, while to stop it you can take advantage of the combination of Alt + E keys .
When the copy is complete, you will find all the files contained in the flash drive in the folder you set (the default is C: WINDOWSsysbackup ).
USB Spy (Windows)
As an alternative to the above program there is USB Spy . It is a small and simple but very efficient zero-cost software for Windows operating systems which, similar to the program I have already told you about, allows you to copy the contents of a USB stick secretly or that of other peripherals that are connected to the computer .
To download the software to your PC, connected to the download page available on the Softpedia website and click on the Download now button located at the top left. Then press the Softpedia Secure Download (US) button in the box you see appearing on the screen and wait for the download to start and complete.
Then extract the compressed RAR archive obtained in any Windows position and then start the executable file contained inside it. At this point, as soon as a pendrive is connected to the computer it will be automatically detected by the program and all the files it contains will be copied to the PC in a completely hidden manner. In the main window of the program you can then view the list of all the elements that have been copied.
By default, the copied files will be saved in the C: UsbSystem folder but if you want you can modify it by accessing the Usb Spy Options tab and editing the path that you find in the field below the wording Target Directory . You can also change the attributes of the reference folder by checking the option you prefer among the three available ( Normal , Hidden or Hidden & System ).
If necessary, you can temporarily stop the automatic saving of the files on the pendrives that are connected to the computer by checking the Stop Auto-Save box located in the main program window. The changes will take effect immediately.
The program can also be configured in such a way as to be totally invisible. To do this, you must always select the Options tab of the same and check the box next to the item Hide on start in Spy Mode Setting and click OK in response to the warning that appears on the screen. Then close and restart the program and you’re done.
If you want, you can also have USB Spy start automatically when Windows starts. To do this, always select the box next to StartUp with Windows in the Options tab of the program .
I would also like to point out the possibility of configuring the use of a specific combination of keys to recall the use of the program on the fly by filling in the Hotkey to show Usb Spy section and that of a password to protect the use of the software by typing the password that you prefer in the years fields to the Password Protection section below.
USB Backup (Mac)
As far as the Mac universe is concerned, programs with a similar function to the one mentioned above do not seem to exist. An almost similar result can however be obtained by using USB Backup, an application that allows you to automatically backup the contents of the pendrives that are connected to the computer. It is effective, very simple to use but it is paid (although it is possible to download the free trial version of the program, the one I used to draw up this step) and also to make sure that a date is automatically backed up key, the first time you have to connect it to your computer and configure it to the power of attorney.
To download it, connected to the dedicated page on the MacUpdate website , click on the Download item at the top left, press the No thanks link , take me to my download in the window that appears on the screen and wait a few moments for it to appear. program download is started. If this does not happen automatically, click on the link click here on the page that opens.
When the download is complete, open the obtained .dmg package file and drag the program icon inside it to the macOS Applications folder, then right click on it and select Open two consecutive times in order to start USB Backup, however going around the limitations imposed by Apple on unauthorized developers.
Once the program window appears on the desktop, type the password you want to use to encrypt the backup in the appropriate fields and click OK twice in succession. Now, click on the Backup button that you find next to the name of the reference pendrive and then press it again on the Backup button and wait for the first data copy procedure to be started and completed.
At the end of the process, the application will be configured and every time the stick will be connected to the Mac and USB Backup is running the backup of the relative contents will be performed without you having to do anything.
How to avoid the hidden copy of data on USB sticks
In the previous lines we have been able to see that by resorting to the use of some special programs it is possible to copy a USB stick secretly. But what if we wanted to avoid such a situation? How to do? Let’s find out now. Find all the details on what to do in the following lines.
Check the running processes
Starting from the fundamental assumption that trusting is good but not trusting is better so it is advisable to avoid connecting your own pendrive to public computers or in any case to those accessible to more people because we cannot know who employed it before us what it can have done on the PC, if this is strictly indispensable, we can first keep an eye on the applications and processes active on the computer to make sure that there is nothing suspicious running.
To do this, access the Task Manager tool on Windows by calling it from the Start menu or from the Start Screen (depending on the version of Windows in use) and then check the list of active applications and processes. Let’s also take a look at those in the background by clicking on the arrow next to the wording More details at the bottom and reviewing everything reported in the left column in correspondence, in fact, with the wording Processes in the background .
If you are using a version of Windows earlier than Windows 8 / 8.x, once you open the Task Manager window, first select the Processes tab . In this case, no distinction will be made between “normal” and background ones. For more info on a given process, right click on it and select Properties , while to end it presses, always after selecting it, on the End process button at the bottom.
If we find any suspicious process, we can get more info about it by right clicking on it and selecting the Properties item from the menu that appears and / or the Search online one to perform a search on the net about it. To interrupt a process, however, we must select it and then press the End activity button at the bottom right.
If, on the other hand, what you are using is a Mac, you can monitor the various running processes by calling the Activity Monitoring tool from the Launchpad and browsing the list that is proposed to you. In case you find some suspicious process, click on the “i” button at the top left to get more info. To end it, however, click on the button with the “x” that you always find in the upper part of the window.
Use software to block writing and reading
Further systems to avoid the unauthorized copying of the contents of a pendrive constitute in resorting to the use of specialized software in preventing the reading and writing of external drives, as in the case of those that I have indicated to you in my guide dedicated precisely to how protect USB stick .
For the purpose in question, it may also prove useful to apply a password to the pendrive in such a way as to prevent unauthorized third parties and various programs such as those mentioned above from obtaining the content. If you are interested, you can refer to my guide on how to put the password on a USB stick through which I proceeded to talk to you about the matter in great detail.
Use a good antivirus
This is not the case with the situations mentioned at the beginning of the article, it is true, but considering that in some circumstances the copying of the contents of a stick can also take place by means of malicious software and processes on the used computer, to avoid this it can also prove useful to resort to use of good antivirus software . If you have not yet installed one on your computer (bad, very very bad!), You can get some useful tips on what to do by reading my article dedicated to the best antivirus .
If then you want to receive some advice also as regards the macOS side (although it is much less burdensome aspect to the Windows universe but, as you say, prevention is better than cure), take a look at my post immediately on the best antivirus for Mac .
