How to clear your phone memory: Android
Without a shadow of a doubt, the most efficient way to clear the memory of your Android phone is to erase unnecessary elements on your smartphone: duplicate files or files already stored in the cloud, unused applications, app cache and so on.
Performing these operations manually can be a long and quite cumbersome operation: in such cases, some applications that include memory management features, such as Google’s Files : the official file manager of “big G “, Present in most modern Android devices (but can also be downloaded for free from the Play Store and alternative stores), allows you to keep track of the memory in use of the smartphone and free it, if necessary, by deleting unnecessary files.
So, first of all, open the app in question (and, if requested, allow it to access the memory, responding affirmatively to the warnings shown); now, tap on the Erase tab located at the bottom and wait a few moments for the application to analyze the contents of the memory.
Once the analysis is complete, potentially useless files will be divided by category: junk files (i.e. temporary files created by apps), memes , duplicate files , screenshots , WhatsApp multimedia content and other messaging applications, unused apps , downloaded files and files large .
Now, tap on the Select and free [XX GB / MB] button located inside the corresponding box, put the check mark next to the item All items , to delete the entire content of the category, or to each of the files to be to delete; when you are done, tap the Delete button to delete the selected items, bearing in mind that the operation is irreversible and will result in the permanent loss of the files .
Finally, if you believe that one or more categories should not be checked (because, for example, you want to keep the files inside them), locate the respective tabs and swipe right / left in correspondence with their previews, to ignore them.
As for the management of photos and videos , however, I recommend that you consider Google Photos , a service (with its app) offered by “big G” to automatically archive on the cloud and synchronize on all devices connected to the same Google account. photos and videos present on your device, without space limits and at no cost (if you agree to limit the revolution to 16MP for photos and 1080p for videos): I told you about it in more detail in a dedicated tutorial.
After backing up your media files, you can physically delete them from your device, again using the aforementioned app: do not worry, the files will remain stored in the cloud and always available within Google Photos.
To do this, start the Google Photos application, tap on your avatar located at the top right and then on the Free space item , located in the panel that appears (make sure that the word Backup completed is present in the latter ). To delete the stored files from the device memory, now touch the Free [xx GB / MB] button located in the next screen and you’re done!
How to clear Samsung phone memory
If yours is a Samsung- branded smartphone , you can also take advantage of Device Care (called Device Maintenance , on older devices), the “standard” tool that allows you to perform a series of maintenance operations on your phone, including delete unnecessary apps and files from memory.
To use it, tap on the Settings icon (the gear- shaped one ) located on the Home screen and / or in the drawer of the device, tap on the Device assistance / Device maintenance item and reach the Storage memory section , by tapping on the appropriate button located at the bottom.
Following this operation, the analysis of the device memory will start and, at the end of the same, you will be offered a report on the amount of space occupied, divided into data relating to the system / user, unnecessary files and available space.
In particular, the information relating to user data is organized into categories, which the system suggests to delete to save space: to remove the pre-selected items from the device, aware that, following deletion, they will be permanently lost , tap on the Optimize Now and Fix / Clean Now buttons .
If before starting the cleaning you want to view the elements in each category and, if necessary, keep some of them, tap on the name of a category, put the check mark only next to the files to be removed and tap the Delete item , located at the top of right, to delete them.

How to clear Huawei phone memory
If, on the other hand, it is your intention to understand how to clear the memory of the Huawei phone , I suggest you give Optimizer a chance , a default app that allows you to perform various maintenance operations on the device, including deleting unnecessary files / potentially useless.
To use it, start the app by recalling it from the device drawer, tap the Cleaning button and wait a few moments for the device memory to be analyzed. Once the verification is complete, you should be shown a summary screen, containing the potentially superfluous items stored in memory, divided by category (eg Spam files, app data, residual files, WhatsApp, unused apps, and so on).
To delete all the files belonging to a specific category, in one go, tap the Remove button corresponding to it. However , keep in mind that the deletion of the files is final and cannot be undone: for this reason, if you have any doubts, I recommend that you manually check the files found and decide whether to delete them or not. To do this, tap on the name of each category and, after locating and selecting the files to delete, tap the Delete button and that’s it.
On some not very recent devices from the manufacturer, however, Phone Management is available which works in a rather similar way to the solution seen a little while ago. To use it, start it using the icon located in the drawer (or on the Home screen) of the phone, tap on the System optimization item and wait for the application to perform a memory analysis.
Once verified, make sure that all the entries in the Cache Trash section are checked and tap the Clean button to start deleting them. Also, by expanding the Memory Cleanup item , you can get an overview of the apps that take up the most space on your device, and uninstall them in just one tap. Other methods to clear android phone memory
If you feel that the solutions I have given you above are not enough, you can consider using additional methods to free up space on your device.
- Use an app to free up space – by searching the Play Store or alternative markets, you will notice that there are numerous apps dedicated to cleaning Android, many of which, however, only do damage. My advice is to stay away from it: if you are looking for an all-in-one solution for cleaning your smartphone, you can take a look at SD Maid which allows you to delete, even in bulk, useless files and little used applications. It should also be used with a grain of salt, but it is definitely more reliable than the average of apps of this type. More info here.
- Delete unnecessary content in messaging apps – primarily WhatsApp. Find out how to do it in my tutorials on how to clean WhatsApp and how to delete files from your phone.
- Transfer files and apps to microSD – if you have a smartphone with microSD support, you can use the latter to host files and applications, thus decreasing the internal storage space occupied. More info here.
- Transfer files to your PC – if you really can’t do without the files in your device’s memory, you can consider moving them to your computer and storing them in a safe place: if you don’t know how to connect Android to your PC, go for it. also refer to the specific guide that I made on the subject.
- Use the cloud – if you don’t have a computer, you can keep the files you care about most in the cloud: services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive are specially designed for this purpose and, among other things, offer automatic backup capabilities. for some content categories.
To conclude, I would like to advise you to read my guide on how to free up space on Android, in which I have given you even more advice on the correct management of memory, on smartphones (and tablets) animated by the Google operating system.
How to clear your phone memory: iPhone
Contrary to what we have seen on Android, there are currently no applications capable of automatically optimizing the memory of the iPhone , due to the severe restrictions imposed by Apple on developers and, nevertheless, some “standard” mechanisms aimed at to improve the management of the available space.
For example, iOS allows you to automatically uninstall unused apps , while leaving the data on the device, ready to be used at the next installation; to enable this feature, go to the iOS Settings menu , by tapping on the symbol of the gear residing in Home, tap on the App Store item and move the lever relating to the item Remove app you do not use to ON .
Still talking about apps, iOS allows you to find out which ones take up the most space on the iPhone and, if necessary, delete them: access the iOS Settings again , go to the General and iPhone Space sections and wait a few moments for iOS to analyze it. internal space of the phone.
Following this operation, you should see a screen containing the list of all the apps installed on the iPhone, in descending order of occupied space: to delete those that take up more space and / or deem superfluous, tap on their name and press the Uninstall app button , to delete the application leaving the data intact, or Delete app , to delete both the app and its data.
As for the management of photos and videos , I suggest you activate the automatic optimization of the iPhone space : in this way, the photos and videos made through the “iPhone by” are stored online in original quality, while on the device only space-optimized versions are kept.
To enable this feature, go to the Settings menu > iOS Photos and put the check mark next to the item Optimize iPhone space . For this service to work, iCloud Photos must be active on the iPhone in question. This is a service similar to Google Photos which, however, erodes the storage space on iCloud Drive (basic 5GB) and therefore “forces” to subscribe to a paid plan for the latter.
In this regard, you will be pleased to know that Google Photos , the “big G” service dedicated to the storage (even free) of photos and videos, is also compatible with iPhone and allows you to delete “on the fly” files already uploaded to the cloud also on the latter. So, after installing the app and backing up all the multimedia contents in memory, tap on your avatar located at the top right, then on the items Photo settings , Manage storage space and, finally, on the button Free up space .
As I have already explained to you in the opening bars of this section, there is not much else you can do to automate the management of free space on the iPhone. Personally, to check for useless or superfluous files, I recommend that you regularly open the Files app (included “standard” in the operating system) and check the contents of the Downloaded and Recently deleted folders ; this last position, in particular, contains the files deleted by the “iPhone by”, pending definitive deletion.
To delete a file, make a long tap on its preview and select the item Delete / Delete now from the panel that appears.
If the space available is still insufficient for your needs but, at the same time, you need all the files in memory, you can contact a cloud storage service and store them there: iCloud Drive , for example, is the service provided. available from Apple, integrated within iOS, which allows you to get 5 GB of space for free and to obtain additional paid packages, with prices starting from € 0.99 / month for 50 GB. For more details, I refer you to reading my specific article on iCloud Drive.
