How to clean Windows 10 disk: However advanced, fast and efficient it may be, even your PC with Windows 10 installed, the most recent operating system from Microsoft, can be affected by the presence of so-called “junk files”. All computers, in fact, with the passage of time and above all with continuous use, may suffer a decrease in general performance linked, in fact, to the increase of unnecessary files on the disk. Furthermore, as can be easily guessed, too many junk files take up precious space that could instead be exploited in a different way. The same goes for particularly heavy elements and for programs that are installed and no longer used.
At this point you will surely be asking yourself: how to clean the Windows 10 disk ? And I’m here, ready and well available to provide you with all the answers you need. Assuming that this is a rather simple operation to perform and for the accomplishment of which there is no need to be a genius of computer science, to eliminate junk files, heavy files, useless programs and other various elements that literally go to clog your hard disk, all you have to do is resort to the use of some special “standard” tools. This therefore means that you will not have to download and / or install absolutely nothing new of what is not already present on your multimedia station.
If then what is already available on your computer does not satisfy you, you will always be able to carry out a healthy Windows disk cleaning operation using third-party tools, such as the excellent CCleaner (you have certainly heard of it …). To find out more, read on, find all the info and explanations you need right below. Good job!
Delete the junk files
First let’s try to understand how to clean the Windows 10 disk from junk files. As I said, to carry out this type of operation you can take advantage of both the tools pre-installed on your computer, those provided directly by Microsoft, and special third-party resources. In both cases, don’t worry, you won’t have to do anything too difficult, you have my word.
To clean the Windows 1o disk using Disk Cleanup , the ad hoc utility included in the system, click on the Start button (the Windows flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen), look for the term disk in the menu that is shown to you and click on the Disk Cleanup icon .
If you are asked to select the unit to be cleaned, make sure that the one with the operating system is selected from the drop-down menu (usually it is C 🙂 and press the OK button . Then wait a few moments for the disk to scan and affix the check mark corresponding to the elements to be deleted. Personally I recommend you to remove temporary files (i.e. temporary data generated by applications installed on your computer but not yet removed from the hard disk), preview files for images and videos, files in the recycle bin and temporary Internet files (those that were created by Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge). Instead, I recommend removing the check from the Downloaded programs item if you do not want to delete the applications in the downloads folder.
Then click on the OK button , confirm your willingness to perform the cleaning operation by pressing Delete files and wait for the whole procedure to be completed (it may take some time, it all depends on the total amount of files to be to remove).
Eventually, you can also activate the deletion of some system files, such as the device driver packages (the older drivers replaced by those downloaded via Windows Update) and the non-critical Windows Defender files (the antimalware included by default in the system ), simply by clicking on the Clean up system files button attached to the Disk Cleanup window.
Windows 10 settings
To eliminate the junk files stored on your PC’s hard disk, you can also take advantage of another standard feature available only for the latest OS of the Di Redmond company: the one that allows you to delete temporary files by acting from the Windows 10 settings How do you use it? Nothing could be easier! First click on the Start button (the Windows flag located in the lower left corner of the screen), and click on the gear icon located on the left side of the menu that opens. If you can’t find it, type settings in the search field you see appearing and click on the first soluble in the list.
In the window that at this point will be shown on the desktop, click on the System icon , select the item Storage from the left sidebar and then click on the item This PC is on the right. Then select Temporary files .
To conclude, select the items you want to delete by choosing between Temporary files , Download folder , Empty trash and Previous version of Windows (if present) and placing a check mark next to the items of interest and then presses on Remove file .
As an alternative to the aforementioned tools and to eliminate the rest of the temporary files on your computer, I recommend you turn to CClenaer , an excellent third-party application that allows you to optimize your computer’s performance by removing various unnecessary files (temporary application data, history Internet browsing, etc.), cleans the registry, deletes duplicate files and much more. All completely free (in reality there is also a paid version of the program but if you do not have special needs you should not need them).
To download CCleaner to your PC, connected to its official website and click on the CCleaner.com link located under the wording Free . Then launch the ccsetupxx.exe file and click the Yes button in the window that opens. Then select Italian from the drop-down menu for choosing the language at the top right and complete the installation of the program by pressing first on Install and then on Start CCleaner .
Once installation is complete, start CCleaner, select the Cleaning tab from the left sidebar and check the items relating to the items you intend to delete. If you are not sure where to get your hands, I suggest you avoid personal initiatives and leave everything as it is by default. Then click on the Analyze button to find out the list of files to be deleted, then take a look to make sure that there is nothing strange and then start the actual deletion from the disk by pressing the Start cleaning button .
In addition to as I have just indicated, you can free up disk space by removing any duplicate files on it. You ask me how? Simple: using a special CCleaner function. To use it, select the Tools item from the left sidebar of the program window, click on Search for duplicates , indicate the drives or folders to be analyzed, adjust the search preferences for duplicate items (e.g. ignore hidden files, search only files which have certain maximum or minimum sizes etc.) and click the Search button . If you feel you need more information on how CCleaner works, read also my tutorial on how to download and use CCleaner .
Delete the heavy files
And what about deleting heavy files? Well, unfortunately Windows 10 does not integrate any special function (at least not yet) but it is an operation that can still be carried out by resorting to the use of special third-party tools.
Among the various programs available on the square used to identify the heaviest files on Windows 10 (and not only) I want to recommend WinDirStat . This is a zero cost and open source application which, once in use, allows you to view all the files on the disk, organizing them in order of weight and showing a special graph through which you can more easily locate all the data stored on the hard disk according to their type and quantity.
To download WinDirStat to your computer, connected to its official website and press first on the wording Downloads, permalinks which is on the left, then on Download WinDirStat xx from FossHub and to conclude on Download WinDirStat Windows Installer .
When the download is complete, open the just obtained windirstat_xx_setup.exe file and click Yes . Then accept the conditions of use of the program by placing the check mark next to the item I accept the terms in the License Agreement and complete the setup by clicking first on Next twice in succession, then on Install , then on Next and finally on Close .
At this point, start WinDirStat, select the units to be analyzed and press the OK button . Then wait for the completion bar to reach 100%, browse the list of all the heaviest files stored on your hard disk and delete them or move them to an external storage drive. If the files are not organized by size, click on the Size tab to fix it.
