A friend of yours, who owns a Huawei smartphone just like yours, has changed the default Android font and now his home screen is much more beautiful and original than yours. You envy him a little, right? So why don’t you get to work right away and try changing the default font on your phone too? How do you say? Not very tech savvy and don’t know where to put your hands? I assure you that you are getting lost in a glass of water!
Changing the default font on Android is really child’s play, on Huawei terminals it is even more so. However, today I’m here to give you a hand and show you in detail how to do it: I will first explain how to install custom fonts through the Huawei Themes app, which works even if you don’t have root permissions enabled; then I will show you how to change the size of the writing characters displayed on the screen and I will recommend an application that allows you to force the change of the default fonts on terminals that have been unlocked via the root procedure.
Note: for the tutorial I used a P9 Lite equipped with Android 6.0 and with the EMUI 4.1.1 interface. In any case, I will provide you with information on how to change fonts on Huawei suitable for all the terminals of the Chinese giant and a little for all versions of Android and EMUI. Happy reading and, above all, have fun! I bet that, after reading, you will be able to get a truly spectacular home screen!
Changing fonts on Huawei without root
If you have a Huawei smartphone equipped with EMUI 4.x, you can change the default Android font in a very simple way: all you have to do is download the fonts of your interest from the Internet, copy them to the HWThemes folder of your device and activate them through the application Huawei Themes . All without rooting.
To download the fonts to use on your Huawei smartphone, you have to go to the XDA forum , the main forum for “geeks” dedicated to the Android world, which hosts many fonts optimized for use on the devices of the famous company. asian.
Then use your Huawei smartphone to connect to this page of the XDA forum , press the Show Full Post button located at the end of the first post and access the download page of the font of your interest (eg Open Sans Condensed Light ) by tapping on the DOWNLOAD link placed next to its name.
A page of the Mediafire site will open . Then press the DOWNLOAD button and agree to start downloading the zip file with the fonts. If you are asked which app you want to complete the operation with, choose the browser you are currently using (eg Chrome ).
Once you have downloaded the font you intend to use as the default Android font, you need to make it discoverable by the Huawei Themes app . So download a file manager for your smartphone (I recommend Total Commander , but there are many on the Play Store) and use it first to change the extension of the file you downloaded from .zip to .hwt (i.e. the extension of the Huawei themes) and then to copy the package with the fonts in the HWThemes folder of your device.
If you have chosen to use Total Commander, proceed as follows: open the Download folder on the memory of your device, make a long tap on the zip package that contains the font, select the Rename item from the box that opens and delete .zip to end of the file name to replace it with .hwt . To apply the changes, press the Rename button .
Then make a long tap on the hwt file you just obtained, select the Copy to clipboard item from the box that opens, go to the HWThemes folder located in the main directory of your smartphone ( Internal memory ), make a long tap on any of the files contained in it (if the folder is empty, make a long tap on the box at the top: the one with the blue arrow and the icon of the house inside) and select the Paste here item from the menu that opens . In this way the hwt file with the custom font will be saved in the Huawei themes folder.
At this point, all you have to do is open the Huawei Themes app and apply the font you copied just now in the HWThemes folder on your smartphone. Then start the Themes application (by selecting its icon from the drawer , i.e. the screen with the list of all the apps installed on the device), press the OK button that appears at the first start and tap on the My tab , located at the top To the right.
Subsequently, select the box relating to the font you have installed (e.g. open_sans_condensed_light ) and press the Apply button first and then the Keep button to make the changes effective.
If all goes well, the typing font of the home screen and Android menus will transform and you will be able to give a new – much more original – look to your Huawei smartphone.
In case of second thoughts, to restore the default font of your smartphone, connect again to the XDA forum page with the fonts for Huawei terminals , press the Show Full Post button located at the end of the first post and tap on the DOWNLOAD link placed under the EMUI DEFAULT FONT (FONT RESET) item .
Then proceed to download the font and apply it through the Themes app, as I explained to you before (then renaming the .zip file to .hwt and copying it to the HWThemes folder on the phone).
If you are using a smartphone equipped with EMUI 5.x , you can try to bring up the option for selecting fonts ( font style ) in the Settings> Display menu of Android by connecting the device to the computer, opening the Command Prompt and giving the command
adb shell settings put system hw_hide_font_style false.
However, I point out that the procedure seems to work only on terminals set to the English language. Furthermore, it requires the presence of Huawei drivers on the PC (drivers that you can get by installing the HiSuite program , as I explained to you in my tutorial on how to connect Huawei to your PC). If your phone is equipped with a version of EMUI other than 4.x, you would do well to go directly to the apps to change fonts which I will talk about shortly, again in this tutorial.
Change font size on Huawei
If, once applied to your smartphone, the new font seems too small or too big, you can change its size by adjusting the Android settings.
Then access the settings menu (the gear icon located in the screen with the list of all the apps installed on the device), go to Display , tap on the Font size item and choose one of the proposed options: Small , Normal , Large , Very large or Huge .
App to change fonts on Huawei
If the standard procedure for changing fonts on Huawei did not give the desired results and / or you have a smartphone model equipped with a version of EMUI other than 4.x, you must use third-party applications; applications that in most cases need root permissions.
Before proceeding and following the instructions I am about to give you, therefore make a complete backup of your device (if you do not know how to make an Android backup, read the guide I dedicated to the topic) and root it following the instructions that I gave you in my tutorial on how to unlock a Huawei phone.
The root procedure leads to the deletion of the data on the smartphone (due to the unlocking of the bootloader) and the invalidation of the device warranty : think carefully before continuing, it may not be worth it just to change the default Android font. That said, let’s take action.
The first app to change fonts on Huawei that I recommend you try is iFont , which is completely free, includes a wide range of ready-to-use fonts and allows you to apply fonts downloaded externally from the Internet (in ttf format ). To work, it necessarily requires root.
Once the iFont download from the Play Store is complete, start the app and browse all the fonts available in it: in the Recom tab you can find the fonts recommended by the application staff, while in Find you can browse all the fonts available in the application ( Font all ) or display the newest ones ( New Font ).
Once you have found the font of your interest, tap on its name and press the Download button first , to download it to your phone, and then on Set and OK , to import it into the Huawei Themes app . If this is your first time doing this, grant iFont root permissions by pressing the Grant button .
At this point, press the OK button to open the Themes application , select the font you just downloaded with iFont from the My tab and proceed with its application by pressing the Apply button first and then Keep .
Have you downloaded a font from the Internet and would like to turn it into the default font on your Huawei smartphone? With iFont you can do this too. Copy the font on your phone’s memory (the file must necessarily be formed ttf ) and uses a file manager to move it to the folder ifont located in the root directory of your device or your SD card (you can use the function copy to clipboard of Total Commander , as I explained to you earlier in the chapter on the standard procedure for changing fonts on Huawei).
When the operation is complete, open iFont, select the My tab located at the top right and, after pressing the My Font item , you will find the fonts you copied in the “ifont” folder of the phone. To apply a font on your smartphone, then press on its name, then on the Set and OK buttons and open the Huawei Themes app to make the changes effective (just as I explained to you before for the fonts downloaded directly from the iFont app) .
In case of second thoughts, you can restore the default EMUI font by going to the My tab of iFont and choosing the Factory Font option from it (at the bottom of the menu).
Then press the OK button to open the Huawei Themes app , select emui_default from the My tab and proceed to the application of the default EMUI font as if it were any other font.
If iFont does not fully satisfy you, you can try Hifont : another free app to change the default Android font, which on some models of Huawei smartphones (those of the P series and the Honor ) also works without root but which, unfortunately, tends to display a little too many banner ads.
To find out how Hifont works, install the application from the Play Store, start it and browse all the fonts available for download: in the Category tab you can browse the fonts based on their category (eg Handwrite for those based on writing a mano, Holiday for those dedicated to holidays and so on), in the New tab you can view the list of the most recently added fonts to the app, in the Hot tab you can find the most interesting fonts of the moment, while in the Colorfonts tabyou can find colored fonts (to have the writing on the home screen and in the Android menus of another color). If you want to see all the fonts available, choose the All tab located at the top right.
Once you have found a font of your interest, first tap on its name and then on the Download , Use and OK buttons to import it into the Huawei Themes app . Then open the latter, select the font you just imported and apply it to Android by pressing the Apply and Keep buttons .
If you want, you can also install fonts downloaded from the Internet (in ttf format ), copying them to the Hifont folder in the main directory of your smartphone and then selecting them from the Settings> My Font menu of the app.
To restore the Android default font instead, go to the Hifont Settings menu , select the Font recovery option and choose whether to restore the backup font (i.e. the font that was used on the phone before using Hifont) or the default font , then the default EMUI font.
Once you have selected the font to restore, tap the OK button and the game should be done (although, in some cases, it may be necessary to restart the system for the changes to take effect).
If any steps related to the operation of iFont or Hifont are not clear to you, read my tutorial on how to change fonts on Android, in which I told you in even more depth about both apps.
