Over the years, Facebook chat has supplanted many of the instant messaging programs that were once quite successful (eg Windows Live Messenger … do you remember?). Too bad that if many of these old software allowed to set the invisibility in chat while on Facebook this is not possible, or rather there is no special function. So? There is however a way to be invisible on Facebook? The answer is yes and if you take a few minutes of free time I can also explain how.
All you have to do to succeed in your intent is to disable the Facebook chat and put into practice other “tricks” (such as hiding recent activities performed on the social network) that can be convenient, both from a computer and from smartphone and tablet. I know, it’s not quite the same as setting the invisible state but I can assure you that the result will still be able to satisfy you.
For the sake of completeness of information, it will also be my concern to show you how to delete all browsing data and how to use the incognito mode of the various browsers in such a way as to allow you to access Mark Zuckerberg’s social network without leaving any trace on the computer used. But now let’s ban the chatter and move on to the actual action. Have a good reading.
The first and most practical way to be invisible on Facebook is to deactivate the social network chat. This way you will be offline in the eyes of all your friends and nobody will bother you anymore… or at least nobody should do it again until you enable the chat again!
You ask me what are the steps to take? Nothing simpler! First of all connected to your account on the social network then click on thegear located at the bottom right of the chat bar and select the item Advanced settings… from the menu that is shown to you.
In the box that appears, put a check mark next to the item Deactivate chat only for some friends … and type the name of the person for whom you want to always be offline in the text field below. Then press on the button Save to apply the changes.
Alternatively, you can turn off chat for all contacts except some friends or some friend lists. To do this, just put a check mark next to the option Disable chat for all contacts except … and type the names of the people or reference lists. Then click on Save to apply the changes.
Another interesting option is the one that allows you to disable the chat for everyone, without exception. To do this, you just need to check the item Turn off chat for all contacts. Again, remember to press the button Save to save the settings.
Do you want to be invisible on Facebook by blocking a person in chat permanently? No problem, this can also be done. Click on thegear located at the bottom right and select the item Lock settings from the menu that is shown to you.
Now type the name of the person you want to block in chat in the field Block messages from: then click on the button Block messages to confirm everything.
Note: Blocking a specific user in chat will also affect the Messenger app. Also, this will be visible to the blocked user to the extent that he or she notices the inability to send you messages via chat.
From smartphones and tablets
Even from smartphones and tablets it is possible to be invisible on Facebook by deactivating the chat. To do this, just use the app Messenger and follow the directions I gave you in my guide on how to close Facebook Messenger.
Also through the Messenger app, you can block a specific user in chat just as it is possible to do from a computer. To do this you must therefore open the Facebook messaging application on your smartphone or tablet, press on a conversation made with the contact to be blocked and tap on his name at the top.
Now scroll down the screen displayed, stop on the item Lock and bring up ON the switch next to the wording Block messages. Done!
Disappear from searches
Another system that I invite you to consider and which can prove effective to be invisible on Facebook is that which consists in excluding your data from searches carried out internally on the social network and on Google.
To do this, click on the button depicting a downward arrow located in the upper right part of the blue Facebook bar and select the item Settings from the menu that is shown to you.
In the new web page that appears, click on the wording Privacy located in the left sidebar and change the settings Who can search for you using the email address you provided? And Who can look for you using the phone number you provided? pressing on the item first Edit placed next to each of them and then selecting the option Friends from the menu that is shown to you.
Find the wording now Do you want search engines outside Facebook to redirect to your profile?, click Edit and choose the option No from the menu that appears.
Optionally, you can also make it so that people who don’t know you can’t send you friend requests. How you do it? Very easy: locate the option Who can send you friend requests? present in correspondence with the section Who can contact me? always always in the section Privacy social network settings, click Edit and choose the option Friends of friends from the drop-down menu on the side.
From smartphones and tablets
You can activate the options to avoid appearing in Facebook searches even by acting on the go, from your smartphone or tablet: just use the official app of the social network. Then press the button with the three lines located on the right side of the app screen, tap on Settings and then choose Account settings from the menu that appears.
Now select the item Privacy, locate the items Who can search for you using the email address you provided? And Who can look for you using the phone number you provided?, press on it and choose the option Friends.
As for the impossibility of finding the profile through the searches carried out through Google, you have to identify the item You want search engines outside Facebook to redirect to your profile?, press on it and tap on the selected option in the new screen that has appeared. Then press on the button Confirmation and that’s it.
On the other hand, regarding the possibility of preventing people you don’t know from sending you friend requests, to enable it you just need to locate the option Who can send you friend requests?, tap on it and select Friends of friends.
Blocking users can also be particularly useful in order to be invisible to the eyes of others on the social network.
Whether from computer or mobile, to block a given user on Facebook just go to his profile, select the button with i three dots located at the top right and choose the item Block from the menu that appears. If you need more information on this, feel free to read my article on how to block a friend on Facebook.
Note: Blocking users also removes friendship on the social network. The advice is therefore to adopt this solution only and exclusively in extreme cases and when you are strongly convinced of the thing.
Hide recent activities
A further trick that I suggest you consider and that can be useful for you to be invisible (or at least visible as little as possible!) In the eyes of others is to hide the activities you have carried out with your account.
Let me explain, for example, if you have recently made friends with a new user on Facebook, the news will be shown on the social network home and will be visible to all your friends. It does not therefore take a genius to understand that if you have deactivated the Facebook chat to be offline and / or if you have put into practice the other precautions mentioned above, in this way everyone will know that in reality you are right there, in front of the monitor of the your computer wandering through the meanders of the social network or with smartphone and tablet in hand to do the same.
The procedure to be carried out is very simple: just access the activity log and / or profile, identify the elements to be hidden and select the appropriate option. To know precisely the steps to be taken, both from a computer and from a smartphone and tablet, you can read my tutorial on how to hide recent Facebook activities through which I have explained everything to you in great detail.
Also consider that your presence on the social network is also signaled by the likes you leave on posts, the comments you write and the content you share. So, avoid doing this type of activity or other people may understand that you are actually online. Also, if you have received any messages in chat, I suggest you do not open them until you have no more problems reporting your presence on Facebook, otherwise whoever is on the other side will see the read receipt and will discover in a flash that in reality you are connected.
Remove Facebook Tracks from your computer
In conclusion, if you share your computer use with other users or if the PC you used to connect to the social network is not yours, I suggest you remove any Facebook traces left on it to prevent unauthorized third parties from … Mind your own business without your permission!
To do this, all you have to do is go to the settings of the web browser you used and look for the option to delete the chronology, the cache ei cookies regarding Facebook. If you don’t know how to do it, you can consult my tutorials on how to clear the history, how to delete cookies and how to clear the cache.
If, on the other hand, you want to avoid a priori that the data of your stay on Facebook are stored on the computer, you can enable, before connecting to the social network, the incognito mode on your web browser. If you don’t know how to do it, read my post dedicated to browsing incognito in which I have provided you with all the details of the case.
