App to add movies to iPad

The easiest way to add movies to iPad is to download a third-party media player on your tablet and copy the videos directly to it: by doing this, you save yourself the tedious synchronization procedures via iTunes and, above all, you have the possibility to play all the file formats that Apple’s Video app can’t “digest”: AVIs, MKVs, and the list goes on and on.

There are plenty of media players for iPad, both in the free and paid sectors. The paid ones usually have a more refined interface and are able to play audio tracks in Dolby / AC3 format (codec that requires the payment of a license from the developers and therefore is practically impossible to find in free apps), but beware to “scams”: there are lots of paid media players out there that are poorly made and offer fewer features than free ones! To avoid bad experiences, I recommend that you try directly the ones I am about to recommend, which are among the best on the square.

VLC (free)

Do you need any introduction? VLC for iPad is the transposition of one of the most famous free media players available on Windows, macOS and Linux. Like its desktop counterpart it is completely free, extremely easy to use, and supports all major video file formats. The only drawback, as already mentioned, is that being a free app it does not include support for audio tracks in Dolby / AC3 format.

VLC for iPad can be downloaded easily from the Apple App Store and supports wireless file sharing. This means that by connecting the tablet to the same Wi-Fi network that the PC is connected to, you can transfer a video from Windows, macOS or Linux to VLC on iPad without physically connecting the two devices.

To take advantage of data transfer wirelessly, open VLC on your iPad, press the traffic sign icon located at the top left and, if necessary, move the lever for the Sharing via WiFi option to ON .

At this point, open the browser on your computer and connect to the address that appeared under the word Sharing via WiFi in VLC for iPad (it should be something like http: //iPad-di-yourname.local ). If everything goes right, a web page will open in which you can drag a video file and this, almost as if by magic, will be saved on the iPad’s memory. Please, do not turn off the iPad and do not close the browser tab while transferring files.

If the dragging of the videos does not work, press the (+) button located at the top right and select “manually” the films to be copied to the iPad.

If for one reason or another you are unable to take advantage of file sharing with VLC wirelessly, you can connect the iPad to the computer via Lightning / Dock cable and copy your videos within the application using the sharing function iTunes (or Finder , if you’re using a Mac with macOS Catalina or later) files .

If you do not know, to take advantage of the iTunes file sharing function, all you have to do is click on the iPad icon that appears at the top left of the main program window. Then you have to select the App item from the left sidebar, you have to select the VLC icon from the File Sharing box and you have to drag the movie to copy to the iPad in the Documents box of VLC (on the right).

Infuses (for a fee)

If you are looking for a solution a little more advanced than VLC and, to get it, you are willing to spend some money, do not think twice and try Infuse .

Infuse is an excellent media player for iOS (also compatible with Apple TV) that allows you to play all major video file formats and also supports audio tracks in Dolby / AC3 format. Among its main strengths are the extreme ease of use and the ability to automatically download all information relating to movies, TV series and anime from the Internet. This means that by adding movies to infusions you will not simply see their thumbnails, you will see their official posters with lots of plot, cast and other extremely useful information.

As easily imaginable, all this has a price: Infuse can be downloaded at no cost, but to unlock support for all file formats and to take advantage of all its more advanced functions (e.g. synchronization of settings via iCloud) you need subscribe to a subscription of € 7 / year or you have to buy the Pro version of Infuse which costs € 11.99 one-off (which, however, does not give access to future major updates of the application).

That said, to take advantage of file sharing wirelessly between your iPad and your computer, start Infuse, press the button (…) located at the top right and select the Add file item from the menu that opens. Then select the item via browser from the screen that opens and connect from the PC to the address provided by Infuse (it should be something like http: //iPad-di-yourname.local ). Were you unable to take advantage of the wireless sharing system included in Infuse? No problem, you can connect the iPad to your computer and transfer files the “old way” using the File Sharing function of iTunes (or of the Finder , if you are using a Mac with macOS Catalina or later).

If you don’t know how to take advantage of the iTunes File Sharing function, click on the iPad icon that appears at the top left of the main iTunes window.
