In this guide, in fact, you will find a list of those that, in my humble opinion, represent some of the best email programs available for Windows, macOS and Linux on the desktop and for Android and iOS / iPadOS on the mobile. In short, regardless of the device you use and the platform in use, I assure you that you will be able to find at least one interesting solution. On the other hand, there are really e-mail clients for all tastes, both for free and for a fee.

Mail (Windows 10 and later)

If you are looking for email programs for Windows 10 and later versions (eg Windows 11 ), I can’t help but suggest you contact Mail . It is, in fact, the default e-mail client for the latest versions of Windows . It is totally free and is pre-installed (if removed it can be downloaded again from the relevant section of the Microsoft Store ). It has a beautiful user interface completely localized in Italian, supports all the most popular email services, multiple email accounts and even integrates a calendar.

To use Mail, click the Start button (the one with the Microsoft logo ) on the taskbar, type “mail” in the search field and select the relevant suggestion from the menu that appears.

Once the program window appears on the screen, if you are using a Microsoft account on your computer, the client is already configured with it by default and you can therefore start using it right away.

If you’re not using a Microsoft account, however, you’ll need to set up Mail in advance. Therefore, select the type of account to configure by choosing from the supported mail services or proceed with the manual configuration. Subsequently, provide your email address and password and, if necessary, also the related configuration parameters.

If after starting Mail you don’t see the screen to set up a new account appear automatically, click the Add account link to fix it. If, on the other hand, you previously had already configured an e-mail account and want to add another one, you can do so by clicking on the little man icon in the left side menu and then on the Add account link in the right section.

As regards the management of e-mail, just act from the client interface, which is structured as follows: on the left there is the menu to access the folders of the email accounts, the button to start composing a new message , the one to access the settings etc .; in the center is the list of emails which, after selecting, can be read on the right side; at the top are the search field, buttons for updating accounts and other commands for managing mail.

Microsoft Outlook (Windows / macOS)

Does it really need any introduction? Microsoft Outlook is the all-in-one program included in Microsoft 365 , which allows you not only to manage e-mail and contacts, but also calendar appointments and what can be used to organize the life of a professional. It is perfectly compatible with both Windows and macOS, but to use it you need a subscription to the productivity suite of the Redmond company which is paid (with prices starting from 7 euros / month or 69 euros / year), but you can try it for free for 30 days.

To use Outlook on your computer, first download and install the Office package on your computer, following the instructions I gave you in my tutorial on the subject. Alternatively, if you are using Windows 10 and later you can purchase and download the Outlook application individually from the relevant section of the Microsoft Store (paying 135 euro one-time). Even on macOS you can download the single Outlook application from the relevant section of the Mac App Store and in this case the download is free, but to use the program you need a subscription to Microsoft 365.

Once the download and installation procedure is complete, to start using Outlook, if you are using Windows click on the Start button (the one with the Microsoft logo ) located on the taskbar and select the relevant link , while if you are using macOS access the Launchpad by clicking on its icon (the one with the space rocket ) located on the Dock bar and select the Outlook icon in the new screen that is shown to you.

Once the main Outlook screen is displayed, go ahead with configuring your e-mail account, entering the address in the text field on the screen, pressing the Connect button , typing the associated password and clicking the Connect and Done buttons . Outlook should automatically configure the account, but if this does not happen, you can proceed with the manual configuration by selecting the appropriate item.

Subsequently, you can manage your e-mail by acting from the main interface of the program that will be shown to you and which is structured as follows: on the left there is the section with all the mailboxes and folders with the list with the emails next to it ; on the right is the section through which you can read the selected messages; at the top are the toolbar with buttons for composing a new message, for quick actions etc. and the menu bar with menus for further operations. Thunderbird (Windows / macOS / Linux)

Mozilla Thunderbird is one of the best free email programs in Italian available on the market. It’s multi-platform (so it’s compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux) and it’s open source. Another very important thing to note is that Thunderbird supports extensions. This means that its functionality can be expanded through the use of add-ons that can be downloaded for free from the Internet. In short, it is the perfect solution for those looking for a powerful, feature-rich and 100% free email client. Its interface is a bit “dated” when compared with that of other solutions of this type, but this is a marginal problem.

To download Thunderbird to your computer, go to its website and click the Free Download button located in the center of the page.

At the end of the download, if you are using Windows , open the .exe file obtained and, in the window you see appear on the desktop, click on the Yes button , then press the Next buttons (twice in a row), Install and Finish .

If you are using macOS , on the other hand, open the .dmg package obtained and drag the Thunderbird icon into the Applications folder , then right-click on it, select the Open item from the context menu and press the Open button in the window that appears on the screen , in order to start the program, however, going around the limitations desired by Apple against non-certified developers (an operation that must be performed only at the first execution).

Now that you see Thunderbird’s main window, you need to worry about configuring the program with your email account. To do this, follow the suggested wizard, typing your name, your email address and the relative password in the text fields provided and clicking on the Continue and Done buttons . If Thunderbird fails to auto-fetch for setup, you can enter them manually.

Then decide whether to set Thunderbird as your default email client and wait for the synchronization process with your email account to be completed.

Subsequently, you can configure any other accounts by clicking on the button with three horizontal lines at the top right, selecting the New message item from the menu that appears and the Create a new email account .

Afterwards, you can manage your mail account from the program interface, organized as follows: on the left there are all the folders; in the center of the Thunderbird screen you will find the list of messages, the content of which can be viewed at the bottom after selecting; on the right is the calendar; at the top the toolbar to access the address book, apply filters to messages, etc. and the button to compose a new E-Mail. Mail (macOS)

MacOS Mail

If you have a Mac and want to find out which are the best email programs to use in this case, I recommend you turn to Mail . In case I am not aware of it, I inform you that it is the default e-mail client of macOS . It is very easy to use and configure, it has a very clear and minimal interface, it integrates perfectly with the main functions of the operating system and allows you to manage the e-mail accounts of all the main services, including iCloud, of course.

To use it, access the macOS Launchpad by clicking on the relative icon (the one with the colored squares ) located on the Dock bar and select the Mail icon that you find in the new screen displayed.

Once the program window is displayed, if you have configured iCloud on your Mac, the application will automatically be set up with it and you can then start using it immediately.

If, on the other hand, you do not have iCloud or if you want to add another account, click on the Mail menu at the top left, choose the Preferences item in it and select the Account tab in the new window that appears, then press the [+] button in bottom left, select the provider for the email account, click on the Continue button and follow the suggested setup wizard, providing all the necessary data when requested.

Afterwards, you will find yourself in front of the main Mail interface, which is organized as follows: on the left is the list of mailboxes, folders and messages; on the right you will find the area through which you can view the selected emails; at the top is the toolbar with buttons to start composing a new email, mark messages, move them to the trash etc. and the menu bar with further options to manage the client.
