Autotune programs: You too have been “kidnapped” by trap music and, since you discovered this musical genre derived from rap, you would like to try your hand at making your own song. Clearly we are talking about a hobby, at least for the moment, but even in this case you have not yet been able to find solutions that can help you take off this “whim” of an artistic nature. What if I told you there are gods autotune programs that seem to me just perfect for the result you want to get?

These are programs that, once installed on the PC, allow you to apply distortions of various kinds to your voice, including those characteristics of the trap genre. There are both for Windows and for macOS and Linux and they are almost always simple to use. In many cases, they are also completely free. Clearly, to obtain appreciable results you must also have the right equipment (first of all a professional microphone), because miracles cannot be done, even with the best software in the world.

If, therefore, you are interested in the subject, I would say not to waste any more time in chatting and to get started. Strength and courage: make yourself comfortable, take all the time you need to concentrate on reading the next paragraphs and choose the autotune program that suits you best. There is nothing left for me to do, except wish you good reading and have fun!

Free autotune programs

Let’s go straight to the point and analyze how some of them work free autotune programs. These are multi-platform solutions (available for Windows macOS and, in some cases, Linux too) suitable for the purpose in question. Choose the one that seems to suit you best and put it to good use!

Audacity (Windows / macOS / Linux)

The first solution I recommend you try is Audacitya very famous free and open source audio editing program that can be useful for this purpose, thanks to the use of Graillona plugin that allows you to manipulate audio tracks by creating the T-Pain effect, typical of trap music.

First, install Audacity on your PC. To do this, go to the program download page and click the link Audacity Windows Installer (if you are using a Windows PC) or on the link Audacity macOS DMG (if you are using a Mac). When the download is complete, if you are using Windowsstart the .exe file you have obtained and, in the window that opens, click on the buttons Yup, OK, Forward for four consecutive times and then on Install, Forward, end And OKto conclude the setup.

If you are using a MacInstead, open the package .dmg got it, drag theAudacity icon in the folder Applications on your Mac, right-click on it and select the item You open twice consecutively (this operation is only necessary at the first start of Audacity, to “bypass” the restrictions imposed by Apple on non-certified software).

Next you need to install the plugin menu Graillon. To get his free version, go to his download page and click on the button Free Edition located at the bottom left (the paid version of the program, which costs 29 dollars, allows you to have access to all the plugin controls). Next, extract the contents of thearchive .zip you obtained and open the folder Graillon-FREE-xx.

If you use a PC Windows then open the subfolder Windowsdouble-click the file Graillon-x-FREE-xxxselect the item Run in the opened menu and click on the buttons Yup, I Agree, Next (twice in a row), Install And Closeto conclude the setup.

On Macinstead, after opening the folder Graillon-FREE-xxxopen the subfolder macOSopen the .pkg file contained within it and click on the buttons Go on (twice in a row), I acceptstill Go on And Install. Then enter the password administration of your user account on macOS and click on the buttons Install software, Close, OK And Moveto finish the installation.

Now, close Audacity (by clicking on the x located at the top right of Windows or by pressing cmd + q on macOS) and reopen it. Then enter the menu Effects (above), click on the item Add / Remove Extensions present in the latter, select the item Auburn Sounds Graillon 2 in the window that opens, click the buttons Ability And OK and restart the program again (closing and reopening it).

With that done, you are finally ready to apply the autotune effect in Audacity. Then click on the button Register (to start a new recording) or import one already available via the menu File> Open. Then select with the mouse the track on which you want to apply the autotune, go to the menu Effects and click on the symbol (…) to open the plugin installed just now.

In the window that opens, “play” a little with the knobs located in the menu Correction (below) and click on the button Play (bottom left) to preview the result. When you are satisfied, click on the button Apply present in the Graillon 2 window and export the output file by going to the menu File> Export Audacity and selecting the format and destination folder in the appropriate window. Simple, right?

GarageBand (macOS)

If you have a Macanother solution you can consider is GarageBand. It is a semi-professional software developed by Apple, free and easy to use. It includes voice recording and equalization functions that can be useful for realizing the autotune effect.

GarageBand is installed by default on macOS, so you should be able to open it by clicking on its icon in the Launchpad. If you have uninstalled GarageBand in the past, you can reinstall it from the Mac App Store: to do this, go to This Pagethen click on the button View in the Mac App Storepush the button Get / Install in the window that opens and, if necessary, confirm the operation with the Touch ID (if your Mac has one) or with the password of your Apple ID.

After opening GarageBand, click on the button Empty project and click the button You choose, located in the lower right. Then click on the icon microphonecheck that in the menu Entrance the correct audio input is selected (otherwise make the necessary changes) and click on the button Create.

Next, click on the icon 1 2 3 4 and on the symbol of metronome (both top right), so as to deselect them (they must become gray) and click on red dot located at the top left, to start recording. To stop it, click on the icon rectangle always located at the top. If you want to import an audio track that you previously recorded, open the menu instead File (top left) and select the item You open from the latter.

At this point, select the audio track you’ve registered or imported (above), click the scissors (top left) and go to the card Trace located in the menu that appeared at the bottom of the screen. Once this is done, check the box Limit to hue and move the cursor located under the heading Tone correction: if you take it to the maximum value (ie 100) the autotune effect will be quite marked.

Once you have the desired result, you are ready to export the output file. Then open the menu Share (in the macOS menu bar, top left), select the item Export track to disk … from the latter and, after specifying the name, location and format of the output file, click on the button Exportto save him.

Other autotune programs

Open Pitcher FL Studio

There are also other autotune programs that deserve to be taken into consideration. If the ones mentioned so far haven’t satisfied you, check out these others.

  • FL Studio (Windows / macOS) – it is one of the most popular audio editing programs in the world. It allows you to fully manipulate the recorded tracks. It integrates an ad hoc tool for autotune, but it is also possible to install third-party plugins suitable for the purpose. It is a professional solution, the cost of which starts from 89 euros, but which can be tested for free without time limits (the only limitation of the demo is that it does not allow you to reopen saved projects). For more information about its use, I recommend that you read the guide in which I explain in more detail how to put autotune on FL Studio.
  • Cubase (Windows / macOS) – DAW program (Digital Audio Workstation), whose strengths are MIDI editing and audio editing, which thanks to dedicated plugins (like the one I told you about in chapter on Audacity), allows you to apply autotune to your tracks. It starts at 99 euros, but can be tested for free for 30 days.
  • Cakewalk Sonar (Windows / macOS) – is the perfect program for those who are approaching the world of DAW software, due to its ease of use and its not excessively high cost (starts at $ 49 and can be tested for free for a limited trial period). It too allows you to create the autotune effect through third-party plugins.

Autotune app

Would you like to use some autotune app on smartphones and tablets, so you can make your songs on the go? If your answer is yes, try the following applications – I’m sure they will satisfy you.

  • RapChat (Android/iOS / iPadOS) – this is a free app, through which you can record, add autotune effects and, another interesting thing, add lots of free beats to your tracks.
  • VocaLive (iOS) – is a free app that offers tons of effects and presets. It is very simple to use and there is no lack of manual mixer controls, for even more appreciable results.
  • Voice Synth (iOS / iPadOS) – is an app that is absolutely worth its purchase price (12.99 euros), as in addition to offering more than 250 presets, it allows you to use totally customizable effects. Thanks to the Play-By-Voice function, it also allows you to transform your voice into a real musical instrument.

For more information on the use of these and other autotune apps, I refer you to reading the guide I have dedicated to the topic.
