Enjoy the reading!

Preliminary information

The issue of Android updates has long been one of the biggest benefits and, at the same time, one of the biggest problems of the ecosystem linked to the “Big G” mobile platform: although, in most cases, keeping your device updated is very simple, not always it is possible to receive (at least not officially) the latest version of the operating system that animates the smartphone or tablet, as long as it is supported, due to the decisions and timing of the manufacturers.

Let me explain: due to the huge amount of devices on the market, as well as the large number of producers (known and unknown) who have chosen the Google operating system for their smartphones and tablets, it is practically impossible for contemporary updates to be provided. for multiple device categories , contrary to what happens for iPhones and iPads.

For this reason, although Google releases versions of Android updated and improved in security and functionality at regular intervals, it is not certain that the same will be made available, in a short time, by the device manufacturers: some of them may take weeks, others some months and others, alas, never succeed.

This means that although it is available Android update 11 , updated Android 10 and Android Update 9 for precise device category, it is said that the producer is able to integrate it. However, if you are interested in obtaining information about the latest version of Android supported on your device and compare it with the one currently installed , you can search Google for information about it, or consult the manufacturer’s website.

To try to stem this problem, certainly of enormous size, often we choose to release only the security patches , in the form of an update: in doing so, the manufacturers have the possibility of leaving the Android version unchanged (going to update, if necessary , the only proprietary customizations), but applying the corrections of the security problems discovered over time.

The theme of this guide will be to explain how to get the latest Android updates for your device and how to install them very easily. Keep in mind that, in order for everything to proceed correctly, it is essential to have an Internet connection available , preferably Wi-Fi . For this case, a mobile phone offer may also be fine, as long as it includes a large amount of Giga or, better still, unlimited Giga (Android updates can also be very “important”, in terms of space).

Android OTA update

Android update

The simplest method to download and install updates on Android is to use the OTA system (acronym for “over the air” ): for your information, this system allows you to install available updates directly from your smartphone or tablet, when they are available, without having to use computers or other “support” devices. For everything to go well, it is essential that the phone (or tablet) is connected to the Internet , preferably via Wi-Fi, and that the battery has a charge level of not less than 50% .

Having made this due clarification, if you use an Android device without or with few customizations applied by the manufacturer (e.g. Google Pixel devices or smartphones belonging to the Android One family ), you can check the availability of OTA updates as follows: access the Device settings , by tapping on the gear- shaped icon located on the Home screen or in the drawer, reach the System section and then tap on the Advanced item .

Now, from the additional menu that opens, choose the System Update item and tap the Search for updates button , to ensure that the device identifies any available updates. If the check is successful, tap the Download button to proceed with the download of the update.

Once this phase is completed, Android should show you a notification message concerning the possibility of proceeding with the installation of the update: all you have to do, at this point, is to choose whether to proceed immediately or to complete the operation during the night. , by tapping on the appropriate option that appears on the screen.

The options and menu items listed above may vary slightly, if the device has a version of Android well customized by the manufacturer on board: for example, to proceed with the Huawei Android update , you must go to the Settings> System and updates> menu. Software Update> Check for updates .

Once the verification is complete, you can install the update by tapping on New version and then on Download and install ; if, on the other hand, you prefer the update to be performed during the night (between 2 and 4), tap on the gear symbol and activate the levers relating to Automatic Download via Wi-Fi and Night Update ( more info here ).

The steps to perform the Samsung Android update are quite similar: go to the Settings menu > Software updates> Download and install and wait patiently for the check for any available updates to be completed. If the verification is successful, the software download will start immediately and, at the end of the same, you will be asked whether to apply the update immediately or postpone it to night hours ( more info here ).

Android update with root

Android update with root

If the smartphone or tablet to be updated has previously been subjected to the root procedure , installing updates via OTA may not go smoothly. The unblocking of elevated permissions, in some cases, could make any OTA updates unavailable; in others, however, the installation could be successful but entail, as a direct consequence, the loss of root permissions .

To overcome this problem, you can use a third-party app, such as Magisk Manager : it allows you to restore the original boot image of the operating system in a couple of taps and proceed with the application of OTA updates. , without Android “noticing” the presence of root permissions.

Since this is an unofficial tool, however, I cannot guarantee that everything will be successful: in case of hitches, in the best case you may have to restore the device to factory settings ; at worst you could “hijack” it, rendering it temporarily or even permanently unusable. For this reason, before you even do anything, make sure you have made a backup of the data that is important to you.

To learn more about using Magisk Manager to install OTA updates, I recommend that you carefully read the step- by -step guide created by the app developer (in English). I recommend that you proceed only in full awareness of what you are about to do, as a single mistake could lead to the complete (and unfortunately definitive) breakdown of the device: then don’t say that I didn’t warn you!

Android update without WiFi

Android update

How do you say? You do not have a Wi-Fi connection to use for downloading the update and would you like to proceed using the Internet network of your SIM, which provides a sufficient amount of Giga for the purpose? In most cases, all you have to do is press the Download / Download and install button , which appears following the search for available updates and respond affirmatively to the warning message that appears later, relating to the possibility of having to download large amount of data.

If the version of Android you are using does not provide this possibility, you can insert your SIM card in a second phone (or tablet with SIM), activate the portable hotspot (you can do this from the menu Settings> Network and Internet> Hotspot and Tethering of Android, or from the menu Settings> Mobile> Personal Hotspot of iOS / iPadOS) and connect the Android device to be updated to the network generated by the support smartphone. If you need more information about the use of the mobile phone as a modem , I refer you to reading the tutorial I dedicated to the topic.

Android Auto update

Android update

Generally, the updates available for the Android Auto system , present in many cars, are downloaded and installed completely automatically, as long as the installation of automatic updates of the Android apps has been previously enabled (you can do this by following the instructions that I gave you in my guide on Android Auto ).

However, if you want to get and use the new features of Android Auto, you can force the download and installation of later versions, acting from the app settings; for everything to go well, it is essential that the smartphone or tablet has been connected to a car, stereo or other compatible device .

To proceed, therefore, start the Android Auto app, tap on the ☰ symbol located at the top left and select the Settings item from the proposed menu. Finally, move the lever to ON Try the new Android Auto and that’s it.

Other types of Android updates

The OTA system represents, without a shadow of a doubt, the simplest and most functional method to apply the updates available for Android, but it is certainly not the only one. There are, in fact, alternative and equally effective update methods, which, however, could involve the use of PCs or other support devices, or the use of complicated unlocking procedures. Here are some of the options available.

Update via PC

Other types of Android updates

If you have difficulty in retrieving updates in OTA mode, be aware that some manufacturers provide special tools for PCs , suitable for managing different aspects relating to the smartphone or tablet in their possession (updates included). Once the appropriate software has been installed, simply connect the Android device to the computer via USB cable and click on the appropriate function dedicated to updates .

Here are some programs of this type: Samsung Smart Switch (for Samsung devices, more info here ), Huawei HiSuite (for Huawei devices, more info here ), Lenovo Smart Assistant Tool (for Motorola / Lenovo smartphones and tablets) , LG PC Suite (for LG-branded smartphones and tablets) and Sony Xperia Companion (for Sony Xperia devices). To learn more about how to connect Android to your computer , I refer you to reading the tutorial I dedicated to the topic.

Custom ROM

Custom ROM

If the manufacturer of your smartphone / tablet has decided not to release more updates for the version of Android installed on it, you can still try to get a more recent version of the Google operating system using a custom ROM .

If you had never heard of it, it is a modified operating system, generally made available by third-party developers or communities, through which it is possible to obtain a later (or previous) version of Android, even if the producers of the affected devices do not make it available officially.

The custom ROMs, however, are not available for all existing devices on the market (generally they are developed for those that arouse more interest) and the installation procedure of the same is far from risk-free: first of all, the flashing of the ROMs (i.e. the operation of replacing the operating system) is frowned upon by the manufacturers, therefore it invalidates the warranty of the device ; furthermore, following this operation, all the data present on the device is lost which, in the event of even minor errors, could even become unusable .

If you are interested in learning more about the subject, I refer you to reading my tutorial on how to return to the previous version of Android , in which I told you about all the risks and what are the steps to take to flash a custom ROM on device (the latter are also valid for ROMs based on newer Android versions). The choice is yours on how to proceed!
